    Occamova britva: "Pojedinci imaju prava"

? To su teme današnje Occamove britve. Naš je sugovornik doktor Neven Petrović s Odsjeka za filozofiju Filozofskog fakulteta u Rijeci.

    Trumpism Is Backfiring

If you want to understand the ruins of President Trump’s foreign policy, look no further than Canada. Trump tried to strong-arm America’s trading partner and closest ally with punishing tariffs and threats of becoming the “51st state” in order to extract more concessions. The result? A recent poll found that 41 percent of Canadians now consider the United States an enemy country. Prime Minister Mark Carney is pursuing closer trade ties with China and Europe in order to diversify away from the U.S. And in August, he walked away from trade talks with the Trump administration, barreling our two countries toward a Jan. 1 deadline when huge new tariffs will go into effect. Trump’s theory of power appears to have failed here because Canada — even though it’s the weaker party — simply refused to capitulate. There’s a broader lesson in that. Chrystia Freeland served in a number of senior roles in the Canadian government, including deputy prime minister, minister of finance, and minister of foreign affairs, where she was a lead negotiator for Canada in trade talks with the first Trump administration. She’s the author of a new book, “Unreliable Boyfriend: An Insider’s View of Dealing With a Chaotic Superpower, Plutocrats, and Other Complicated People.” Mentioned: “US business leaders are waking up to the perils of plutopopulism” by Chrystia Freeland “How Democrats Drove Silicon Valley Into Trump’s Arms" by Interesting Times “Jamie Dimon: A Plan for the Western World’s Revival” by Jamie Dimon Book Recommendations: “The Dispossessed: An Ambiguous Utopia” by Ursula K. What Hundreds of Focus Groups With Trump Voters Revealed

Sarah Longwell has probably conducted more focus groups with Trump voters than anyone else in America — hundreds of them, starting in Trump’s first term. So she has a treasure trove of qualitative evidence of how voters have evolved in the Trump era and why many of the president’s voters are souring on him now. Trump’s approval rating has plummeted since the start of his second term, especially among the groups that swung toward him in the last election — young, Black and Hispanic voters. But I wanted to have Longwell on the show to hear what these people are really saying. What exactly has disappointed them about Trump’s second term? And what opportunities could that open for Democrats? Longwell is a founder and the publisher of The Bulwark, the host of “The Focus Group Podcast” and the author of “How to Eat an Elephant: One Voter at a Time.” Mentioned: “Trump Voters Explain Ossoff’s Appeal. And It’s Not What You Think.” by Sarah Longwell Book Recommendations: “Intermezzo” by Sally Rooney “Stoner” by John Williams “The Poisonwood Bible” by Barbara Kingsolver Thoughts? Guest suggestions? Secret Identity

A bank robber on an undercover mission. A teenage girl with the powers of a tiger. A vigilante seeking vengeance in Ciudad Juárez. All have secret identities — but not all of them chose those identities for themselves. Start a Life Partners free trial to watch our new video, A Night of Stories and Improv. (00:00:00) Prologue: Ira attempts to solve perhaps the most unsolvable mystery at the Trees of Mystery in California: Who is the voice of Paul Bunyan? (7 minutes) (00:07:23) Act One: If you ever think about assuming a secret identity, you may want to take a little time to consider the possible consequences. Jon Ronson tells the tale of a bank robber who absolutely does not take that advice. (22 minutes) (00:31:33) Act Two: Elna Baker shares a story about her teenage cousin, Navey Baker, who maintains a secret identity while being a public figure: she's the school mascot, a tiger, at her high school. (11 minutes) (00:41:28) Act Three: While we were putting together this week's show, we heard about a real-life Avenger with a secret identity in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. He went back there to see what effect this secret Avenger has had on the city. (13 minutes) Transcripts are available at thisamericanlife.org / This American Life privacy policy. / Learn more about sponsor message choices.

Archive: Is Mark Zuckerberg Damaging Society?

With the release of Aaron Sorkin's new film The Social Reckoning, Mark Zuckerberg and the dark side of Facebook are back in the spotlight. In 2019, Intelligence Squared put Zuckerberg on trial, asking whether Facebook was doing more harm than good. Was the platform connecting billions of people and transforming the world for the better? Or was it undermining democracy, spreading misinformation and fuelling political division?Seven years later, Facebook is part of Meta, artificial intelligence is transforming social media, and questions about the power and accountability of Silicon Valley's technology giants have become more urgent than ever.In this debate from the Intelligence Squared archive, Damian Collins and Nina Schick argue that Facebook is damaging society, while former Facebook executive Dex Torricke-Barton and former UK government minister Ed Vaizey defend the company. As Zuckerberg faces renewed scrutiny, we revisit a debate that asks who should be held responsible for the consequences of social media. • Stop Feeling Guilty for Cutting People Off

Stop Feeling Guilty for Cutting People Off

Who gets access to you and who doesn’t? In this episode, I’m getting real about cutting people out of your life, setting boundaries, and finally letting go of the guilt that comes with choosing yourself. I talk about outgrowing friendships, recognizing energy-draining and one-sided relationships, dealing with jealousy, and understanding when someone is simply no longer a good fit for the person you’re becoming. I also get into why family isn’t exempt from boundaries, how you can forgive someone without giving them access to you, and why not every relationship needs a dramatic ending... sometimes people just naturally fall away. The older I get, the more I realize that we get to decide who is in our lives, how much access they have to us, and what kind of energy we allow around us. And if setting a boundary makes someone angry? That doesn’t automatically mean you did something wrong. This is your reminder that protecting your peace isn’t selfish, and you don’t have to be a people pleaser to be a good person.
