Why Your Kid Needs More Chores, More Boredom, and More Frustration (Yes, Really)

Why do constraints help kids thrive? Dr. Aliza Pressman & David Epstein reveal the counterintuitive science of raising resilient, confident children. If you've ever wondered whether making things easier for your kids is actually holding them back, this episode will stop you in your tracks. Dr. Aliza Pressman sits down with bestselling science writer David Epstein, author of Inside the Box, to unpack the research-backed case for constraints as one of the most powerful — and most misunderstood — tools in child development. From the Harvard Study of Adult Development's landmark findings on chores and confidence, to the neuroscience of why frustration tolerance is a skill every parent should be actively building, this conversation gives you concrete strategies you can implement this week. Starting at the dinner table. What you’ll learn: Why assigning chores in kindergarten predicts higher self-confidence later, and how to frame them so kids actually want to do them What the Constraints-Led Approach (used by elite sports coaches) can teach every parent about stepping back and letting kids self-organize "Brain first, tool second," David's framework for navigating AI, screens, and the cognitive risks of passive consumption Why anomie (normlessness) drives youth anxiety and how clear family values and rituals act as a protective anchor This episode is brought to you by: Minnow: Cabana Capsule celebrates days spent lingering by the sea, soaking up the sun, and savoring the simple luxury of having nowhere to be. #42 | "I Wouldn't Pay A Penny To Change Him" | Paul Mullin On Albi, Autism & Being A Dad

Paul Mullin has scored goals in front of millions and become a household name through Welcome to Wrexham. But this one is about the part of his life the cameras rarely catch: being dad to Albi, his autistic son. Gaz and Andy sit down with Paul for an honest, Albi-centric conversation about the regression that stopped his little boy in his tracks, the guilt that kept him up at night, and why he wouldn't change a single thing about his son. Plus the moment Albi found a way to tell him 'you're my best friend' without saying a word. If you have ever felt like the only dad going through this, this one is for you. What AI Could Be Doing to Our Kids

AI is getting better at sounding human. Better at conversation. Better at reassurance. Better at knowing exactly what we want to hear. So what happens when our kids start building relationships with machines designed to remove friction? In this conversation, Dr. Becky talks with former Wall Street Journal tech columnist Joanna Stern about AI toys, chatbot companions, creativity, learning, and the surprising role frustration plays in healthy human development. Together, they explore why “helpful” technology can potentially short-circuit the skills kids most need to build: patience, resilience, independent thinking, and real connection. Joanna also shares what happened when she spent time building a relationship with an AI chatbot herself... and why it left her more concerned about kids and companion bots than ever before. * From the newborn days to the teen years, Good Inside now supports parents through every stage of childhood — with practical guidance for the moments that matter most. Reflections on Radicalization: Could It Happen to My Child?

Send us Fan Mail When we hear the word radicalization, we often think, "That could never happen to my family." But what if radicalization begins with something much more human—a need to belong, to feel understood, or to make sense of emotional pain? In this episode, I sit down with men's coach and former counterterrorism professional James Stamatelos to explore why some young people become vulnerable to extremist ideas, how social media can amplify that vulnerability, and what parents can do to build stronger protective relationships with their children. In this episode, we discuss: What radicalization really is.Why belonging and emotional pain matter. How social media can influence young people. Why curiosity is often more powerful than confrontation. How connection can help protect our children.Reflection Question: If my child encountered harmful ideas online, would they feel safe enough to talk to me about them? White noise is the most commonly used sound for babies, it helps them sleep and reduces anxiety. The womb sound can help babies fall asleep because it mimics their mother's heartbeat in the womb. Sounds with a slow tempo that is soothing for babies and adults. Lullabies are songs that have been traditionally sung by mothers to their children to lull them into sleep. Many different sounds can be used to help babies relax and sleep. One of these sounds is the womb sound. Another type of sound that is often used for relaxation is brown noise or white noise. Brown noise is a type of sound that has a low frequency, which means it sounds like it’s from far away, like the ocean or a waterfall. White noise has a higher frequency and sounds like it’s from close by, like rain or wind. The womb sound is a type of brown noise that is supposed to be calming and relaxing. It is said to be one of the babies' most popular sleep sounds. This sound has been proven to help babies sleep faster and sleep better. This is because it mimics the environment in the womb, where they are surrounded by this type of sound. On the other hand, the white noise sound has been proven to help babies sleep longer and stay asleep longer. This type of sound helps block out other noises that can disrupt their sleep, like noisy traffic outside their window. Babies can be very sensitive to their environment. They are still developing, and their brains are not yet fully developed. That’s why it’s essential to provide them with a soothing environment to help them sleep better. Babies have a lot of work to do before they can sleep. They must regulate their body temperature, digest food, and eliminate waste. Babies are also trying to figure out how to get comfortable in the world. All this work takes energy, and it is exhausting!
