Patricia Cornwell on Her Dark Childhood and Best-Selling Novels

“Angel Down,” a grisly novel about World War I told in a single, almost 300-page-long sentence, was awarded this year’s Pulitzer Prize for fiction. In a review for The New York Times, Ben H. Winters described it as a “thunderous gallop” that captures the “cruel and self-perpetuating logic of war.” (It was also one of the Book Review’s Top 10 books of 2025.) The day after the Pulitzers were awarded, the book’s author, Daniel Kraus — who has written horror, fantasy and young adult novels — spoke to the Book Review’s editor, Gilbert Cruz, about putting together his semi-experimental story. Cruz also spoke with Patricia Cornwell, a best-selling author who rose to prominence in the 1990s with novels about the character Kay Scarpetta, a chief medical examiner. A Scarpetta series starring Nicole Kidman debuted this year on Amazon. Cornwell has released a new memoir, “True Crime,” in which she tells the surprising story of her childhood and the events that led her to become a novelist. Best Of: Novelist Douglas Stuart / ‘Half Man’ Actor Richard Gadd

Like the main character in his Booker Prize-winning novel 'Shuggie Bain,' writer Douglas Stuart grew up in Glasgow, working class, queer, and with a mother addicted to alcohol. His first career was in fashion, designing underwear for Calvin Klein. “Sometimes when I’m in an audience now and I feel a little nervous, I have a joke to myself and think, how many people in this audience have worn the underwear that you designed?” He spoke with Terry Gross about his new novel, ‘John of John.’ Later, Richard Gadd, creator and star of the Netflix show ‘Baby Reindeer' talks with Tonya Mosley about his new series, ‘Half Man.' It's about two boys who become brothers when their mothers fall in love. They spend the next 30 years trying to survive each other. David Bianculli reviews the latest adaptation of ‘Lord of the Flies.’ See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for sponsorship and to manage your podcast sponsorship preferences. 22. Ungar stúlkur og eldri menn: Half his Age eftir Jeanette McCurdy

Díana Sjöfn og Sjöfn ræða bókina "Half his Age" eftir unghöfundinn Jeanette McCurdy, sem þekktust er fyrir feril sinn á Disney stöðinni og fyrir endurminningarsögu sína "I'm Glad My Mom Died." Bókin fellur í flokk þeirra ritverka sem fjalla um ungar konur eða stelpur sem eiga í ástarsamböndum við, eða eru táldregnar af, eldri mönnum, sem eiga það mjög oft sameiginlegt að vera enskukennarar. Hvers vegna eru þessar sögur svona vinsælar? Hvað lærum við á að lesa þær ef eitthvað? Og hvers vegna halda allir að enskukennarar séu þeir kennarar sem eru hvað líklegastir til að beita nemenda sína kynferðisofbeldi? Umsjón: Sjöfn Asare og Díana Sjöfn

    02: Undir Helgahnúk

Undir Helgahnúk kom út árið 1924. Verkið skrifaði Halldór Laxness í Benediktínaklaustrinu í Clervaux veturinn 1922, þá tvítugur - og hafði kaþólsk trú sterk áhrif á verkið. Skáldsagan er uppvaxtarsaga Atla Kjartanssonar, prestssonar, sem gengur í gegnum mikla erfiðleika í æsku, missir bróður og móður, og fer í framhaldi að missa trúna. Gestir þáttar eru þau Rán Flygenring, rithöfundur og myndhöfundur, og Halldór Guðmundsson, rithöfundur. Klúbburinn Aldrei las ég Laxness er hugsaður fyrir þau sem hafa lítið kynnt sér nóbelskáldið, þau sem hafa jafnvel aldrei lesið hann, eða bara krukkað í þessari gamalkunnu menntaskólaskyldu, og/eða öll þau sem hafa áhuga á skáldskap Kiljans. Næsta bók sem tekin verður fyrir verður Vefarinn mikli frá Kasmír en fjallað verður um hana í Víðsjá 15. apríl, næstkomandi. Hægt er að taka þátt í umræðum um bækurnar í sérstökum facebook hópi sem má finna hér: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1247768283945537 Grafík: Silvía Sif Ólafsdóttir Hosted on Acast. ‘The Book Review’ Podcast Turns 20

Since its first episode in April 2006, the “Book Review” podcast has played host to hundreds of authors talking about their new works and possibly as many conversations about the best (and sometimes worst) that books have to offer. In this anniversary episode, the Book Review editor Gilbert Cruz is joined by the deputy editor Tina Jordan and the critic Dwight Garner to look back at some of the titles, trends and turning points that have helped define the last two decades in publishing. They revisit blockbuster hits, literary movements and industry-shifting moments, starting with an unforgettable Oprah-related controversy and moving through several hit genres and literary trends. To close out this two-decade retrospective, Cruz puts his colleagues’ literary memories to the test with an only slightly grueling quiz. Books discussed on this episode: “A Million Little Pieces,” by James Frey “Eat, Pray, Love,” by Elizabeth Gilbert “The Hunger Games,” by Suzanne Collins “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” by J.K. Rowling “The Road,” by Cormac McCarthy “Twilight,” by Stephenie Meyer “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” by Stieg Larsson “My Struggle,” Book 1, by Karl Ove Knausgaard “How Should a Person Be?,” by Sheila Heti “My Brilliant Friend,” by Elena Ferrante “The Story of the Lost Child,” by Elena Ferrante “Wolf Hall,” by Hilary Mantel “Bring Up the Bodies,” by Hilary Mantel “The Mirror and the Light,” by Hilary Mantel “Life,” by Keith Richards with James Fox “Just Kids,” by Patti Smith “Born to Run,” by Bruce Springsteen “Chronicles: Volume 1,” by Bob Dylan “Fifty Shades of Grey,” by E.L. James “Gone Girl,” by Gillian Flynn “The Sellout,” by Paul Beatty “Where the Crawdads Sing,” by Delia Owens “American Dirt,” by Jeanine Cummins “Crying in H Mart,” by Michelle Zauner “Blood, Bones & Butter,” by Gabrielle Hamilton “Heat,” by Bill Buford “Dirt,” by Bill Buford “The Song of Achilles,” by Madeline Miller “We Were Liars,” by E. Lockhart “A Court of Thorns and Roses,” by Sarah J. Pride and Prejudice Vol. III Chapters 2-3

Chapter 2: The polite chapter! Darcy brings Georgie to meet Lizzy at long last. We learn that Wickham left many debts. Lizzy feels gratitude toward Darcy. Highlights include Darcy as a vampire, Wickham is not a snacc, a heated conversation about goatees, the enemies-to-lovers trope. Chapter 3: The petty chapter! Caroline Bingley? The bitch is back. Lizzy visits Pemberley, where the Bingley sisters unfortunately are staying. Highlights include an ineffective bitch, some strong opinions on vegemite and marmite, Molly's caviar experience, and Darcy the PROUD RUMP. Study Questions: Topics discussed include what we've learned about Georgie, how the Bingleys have shifted in the narrative, New Darcy TM: Reformed Proud Rump, Lizzy's love status, whether Lizzy is an unreliable narrator, and the timelessness of falling in love. Funniest Quote: "She expected every moment that some of the gentlemen would enter the room. She wished, she feared, that the master of the house might be among them, and whether she wished or feared it most, she could scarcely determine." Questions Moving Forward: What's going to happen at dinner? What's going to happen with Georgie? Will we see Wickham again? Who wins the chapters? Georgie!
