Dwayne Fields, explorer

Dwayne Fields is an explorer and broadcaster who was appointed the UK’s Chief Scout in 2024. He is the first black Briton to reach the Magnetic North Pole. His television work includes fronting the series 7 Toughest Days and co-presenting Endurance: Race to the Pole, and Expedition: Search for the Nile, with fellow adventurer Ben Fogle. Dwayne was born in Jamaica and was brought up by his great-grandmother for the first few years of his life. When he was six he moved to north London to live with his mother. He struggled to adapt to his new surroundings until he found his way to a Cub Scouts meeting where he experienced a sense of belonging for the first time since his arrival. As a teenager, he grew up surrounded by gang violence and experienced a serious knife attack when he was 19. A few years later, during a heated confrontation, he had a gun pointed at him. The gun misfired twice and he survived. This shocking incident spurred Dwayne to change his life and challenge himself to inspire other young people to do the same. In 2010, he walked 400 nautical miles to reach the Magnetic North Pole. In 2019, he co‑founded the WeTwo Foundation with explorer and wild camper Phoebe Smith. The Foundation gives young people from challenging backgrounds the chance to experience life‑changing adventures Dwayne lives in Peterborough with his wife Angelique, and their five children. Roula Khalaf, journalist

Roula Khalaf is a journalist and the first woman to serve as editor of the Financial Times in its 138‑year history. She joined the paper in 1995 as North Africa correspondent, covering the Algerian civil war before reporting more broadly across the Middle East, including Syria, Iran and Iraq, and later the Arab Spring. Roula was born in Beirut and grew up there during the Lebanese civil war which began in 1975. She studied communications at Syracuse University in New York State and then completed a Master’s degree in International Affairs at Columbia University. She joined Forbes Magazine in 1989 before relocating to the UK. Her work has earned several awards, including Foreign Commentator of the Year at the Editorial Intelligence Comment in 2016 Awards and the Foreign Press Association’s Feature Story of the Year for her reporting on Qatar in 2013. Roula has two children with her husband Assaad and lives in London. Growing up black in a white family – the truth behind my birth

M People star Andrew Lovell’s home life hid a terrible – yet beautiful – secret. It would take him decades to find out the truth. At the height of his fame, drummer Andrew ‘Shovell’ Lovell had everything he’d dreamed of: sex, drugs and regular appearances at the top of the charts with the dance music band M People. But sell-out shows, first-class travel and five-star hotels couldn’t stop the questions gnawing away at him. As a mixed-race kid growing up in a white family in south London he wanted to know: who were his birth parents? Why had they given him up? The answer, when it came, was shocking. A disruptive and unruly child, Andrew was asked to leave school aged 15. He found a trade as a plumber but his true passion was music. He joined M People in the early 90s and by 1995 he was touring the world. The band was celebrating its second platinum-selling album in 1998 when Andrew sat down for a heart to heart with his adoptive parents on Christmas Day. He was 33 at the time, and a star – M People was one of the most successful dance music acts in the world with hits like Search for the Hero and Moving On Up. But deep down Andrew was still a little boy with a big question – to which he was about to get a devastating answer. The revelation of who his real mother was left him reeling and plunged him into a breakdown. Nel mezzo: trauma collettivo del tè bollente ad agosto, sacchettini e borsette che si riproducono in bagno come i porcellini d’India del nonno, Sephora che ti prende 100€ e ti dà due micro-profumi come risarcimento morale, e la regola sacra: “compri una cosa, buttane una”…detta da gente che ha ancora scatoloni sigillati dal 2023. Si parla anche di biografie iniziate e abbandonate, di chat che ti fanno venire voglia di divorziare, di ospiti famosissimi che non rispondono (chissà perché) e del grande mistero finale: quattro AirTag arrivati a casa “in regalo”. Benvenuti a Casa Zagato – puntata bonus, cioè quella puntata che esiste solo finché Gianmarco non decide di cancellarla per sport (quindi godetevela come un messaggio vocale della zia Bruna: lunga, confusa e potenzialmente traumatica). Qui dentro si normalizza tutto: slacciare i pantaloni a tavola, vivere senza sponsor e fare informazione scientifica con la stessa autorevolezza con cui si “legge” su TikTok. In questa puntata si smonta la leggenda metropolitana del video da 100 ore che “ha fatto milioni” (spoiler: no, ma continuate pure a crederci se vi aiuta a dormire), si passa con disinvoltura dalle uova bio al sistema solare (perché a quanto pare c’è gente convinta che al centro ci sia la Terra). Nel mezzo: latte, balie, parenti che dispensano consigli non richiesti, e una “mezza poastra” che trasforma il brodo in un’esperienza spirituale…nel senso che vi fa lasciare il corpo. E poi lei, la vera protagonista non dichiarata: zia Bruna, la storyteller definitiva, capace di registrare un podcast involontario al bar e di insegnare al mondo che il brodo si allunga sotto al lavandino come Gesù coi pani e i pesci, ma con più dialetto e meno miracolo. Si finisce con la grande idea del secolo: la posta del cuore per disagi sentimentali, familiari e personali. Insomma: se siete arrivati fin qui siete ufficialmente parte del problema.
