#503 – AI Crisis in Math: Navier-Stokes, Riemann Hypothesis & Complexity Theory

Ankur Moitra, Steven Brunton and Alex Kontorovich are three mathematicians who can speak to this incredible moment in the history of mathematics, when AI solved some of its hardest problems: Navier-Stokes, the quasi-Riemann hypothesis, the unique games conjecture and hundreds of other problems. Ankur Moitra is a mathematician at MIT (visiting the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton) working in theoretical computer science, who can speak to the unique games conjecture, complexity theory and the mathematics of how AI learns. Steven Brunton is a mathematician and fluid dynamics expert at UW, who can speak to Navier-Stokes, turbulence and machine learning for fluid dynamics. Alex Kontorovich is a mathematician at Rutgers specializing in number theory, who can speak to the Riemann hypothesis, Lean and machine-checked proofs. Seinfeld, which ended three decades ago, has been watched by 72 million Americans so far THIS YEAR. Behind that incredible stat is an equally incredible business story: obsessive creators, perfect market timing, an ownership structure that aligned incentives for the long term…all of which created a sitcom that became number one by breaking all the rules. Sponsors: Many thanks to our fantastic Fall '26 Season partners: SierraAnthropicSentryWorkOSLinks: Sign up for email updates, get our takeaways and research photos from each episode, and vote on future topics! The Acquired Seinfeld Companion PDFTop of the Rock: Inside the Rise and Fall of Must See TV by Warren LittlefieldComedianThe Seinfeld Chronicles: An Unnecessary Data Exploration by Andy KirkWorldly Partners' Seinfeld Study by Arvind NavaratnamJerry Seinfeld's 2017 Harvard Business Review InterviewAll episode sourcesCarve Outs: Seinfeld - "The Marine Biologist"Seinfeld - "The Jacket"Seinfeld - "The Dinner Party"The Seinfeld Chronicles: An Unnecessary Data Exploration by Andy KirkBuck's of WoodsideTin CanMore Acquired: Get email updates and vote on future episodes!Join the SlackCheck out the latest swag in the ACQ Merch Store!00:00:00 Start00:00:55 Intro00:04:52 Jerry Seinfeld's Stand-Up Origins (1954-1988)00:16:16 NBC Pitches a Late-Night Special (1988)00:21:35 Enter Larry David (1988)00:35:04 Fin-Syn Rules & The Castle Rock Deal00:52:45 Making the Pilot & Test Screening Disaster (1989)01:04:24 Rick Ludwin Saves the Show (1989-1990)01:10:17 Adding Elaine & "No Hugging, No Learning"01:28:41 Season 2 & Defying Network Notes (1991)01:35:56 The Structural Mechanics of Seinfeld01:45:11 Season 4 & "The Contest" (1992)01:57:09 Moving to Must See TV Thursdays (1993)02:07:28 Anatomy of a Production Week & The Harvard Lampoon Writers02:15:44 The Syndication Cash Cow (1995)02:28:36 Larry Leaves, Cast Salaries & Season 9 (1996-1997)02:42:13 Jack Welch's Brunch Offer & Jerry Walks (1997)02:55:04 The Finale & Final TV Economics (1998)03:11:21 The Modern Streaming Era & Netflix's Massive Deals03:17:38 Analysis03:30:00 7 Powers03:34:00 Quintessence03:41:49 Carve-Outs + Outro ‍Note: Acquired hosts and guests may hold assets discussed in this episode. • Costco

    Costco

Costco is not only Charlie Munger’s favorite company of all time (plus he’s on the board, natch), it’s an absolutely fascinating study in how seemingly opposite characteristics can combine to create incredible company value. For instance: Costco has the cheapest prices of any major retailer in America — and also the wealthiest customer base. They pay their hourly workers 30% above the industry norm (and give them excellent healthcare + 401k benefits) — and are almost 3x more profitable on labor than Walmart. Speaking of Walmart, Costco stocks 40x fewer SKUs than their Bentonville-based rivals — yet sells an average of 15x more volume of each. And oh yeah, practically all of Costco’s C-Suite started their careers as baggers and checkout clerks! Tune in for a mind-bending exploration of one of the world’s most iconic — and iconically unique — companies. This episode was released on August 20, 2023. A Better Way to Think About Tech

It’s become hard to talk about technology. Commentators have split themselves into two increasingly extreme teams: the pessimists and the optimists. But what about the rest of us who don’t hate technology but are wary of obvious harms? In today’s episode, Cal proposes a third option: technoselectionism. How a 19-year-old intern built the growth engine behind this $2B AI company | Hector Serrano

Hector Serrano runs one of the most innovative and successful paid growth programs in Silicon Valley. As Head of Content at Wispr Flow, a leading AI voice-to-text tool, he built a roster of 50 creators who drive 500 to 600 paid user-generated content (UGC) ads every month. The creators are paid a cut of ad spend, and the best of them earn over $13,000 a month. It’s a playbook the best DTC brands have used for years, now adapted for SaaS. Hector joined Wispr Flow at 19, before the product had PMF, and over the past year, Wispr Flow has grown revenue 30x and raised at a $2 billion valuation. We discuss: 1. Why paid UGC is one of the biggest untapped growth levers right now 2. The step-by-step playbook for building a successful paid-UGC program 3. Why the best marketers are “allergic to AI” 4. What makes a great modern marketing hire 5.
