الطائر مكسور الجناح

تُعد قصة «الطائر مكسور الجناح» (The Bird with the Broken Wing) لملكة الجريمة أجاثا كريستي—والتي نُشرت عام 1930م ضمن مجموعة «السيد كوين الغامض» (The Mysterious Mr Quin)—إحدى القضايا التي يمتزج فيها الغموض البوليسي باللمسات الماورائية والموسيقى الدرامية. تبدأ الأحداث أثناء إقامة العجوز الفضولي «المستر ساترثوايت» في قصر «لايدل» بدعوة من صديقته «ماج كيلي». وخلال جلسة تحضير أرواح تسليةً للحضور، تتلقى المجموعة رسالة غامضة تنص على اسمي "لايدل" و"كوين". وفي السهرة، يلتقي ساترثوايت بالمرأة الرقيقة «مابل أنسلي» وهي تعزف على آلة الأوكوليلو (Ukulele)، فيشعر تجاهها بعاطفة حانية تشبه "الطائر مكسور الجناح". وفي الصباح التالي، يُعثر على مابل مشنوقة في غرفتها، وتتجه شكوك الشرطة والمفتش نحو زوجها أو الشاب «روجر جراهام» الذي كانت تجمعه بها عاطفة سابقة. غير أن المستر ساترثوايت—بتوجيه غير مباشر من صديقه الماورائي «السيد هارلي كوين»—يكتشف أن الأمر جريمة قتل وليس انتحاراً؛ إذ استُخدم أحد أوتار آلة الأوكوليلو لخنقها ثم أُعيد تثبيته على الآلة ولكن دون ضبط دوزانه الموسيقي الصحيح. ويتكشف القاتل الفعلي في صاحب القصر «ديفيد كيلي» المصاب بنوبة جنون خفية، مما ينقذ الأبرياء من الاتهام الباطل. القضية المستحيلة

ننتقل الآن إلى "ملكة الجريمة" أجاثا كريستي في واحدة من رواياتها التي تعتمد على ذكاء المحامي والتحقيق القانوني بقدر ما تعتمد على كشف الألغاز، وهي رواية "القضية المستحيلة" (The Pale Horse / Endless Night) - وتعرف أحياناً في الترجمات العربية بأسماء متقاربة تشير إلى القضايا المعقدة التي يبدو حلها ضرباً من الخيال. الجريمة كأحجية رياضية: أجاثا كريستي في هذا العمل لا تقدم جريمة عاطفية فحسب، بل "هندسة جنائية". القضية تبدو "مستحيلة" لأن كل الأدلة تشير إلى طريق مسدود، أو لأن الجاني يملك "حجة غياب" حديدية لا يمكن كسرها بالمنطق العادي. التلاعب النفسي: تبرع كريستي في جعل القارئ يشك في الجميع، بمن فيهم الشخصيات التي تبدو فوق الشبهات. David Szalay

Booker Prize-winning author David Szalay talks to John Wilson about his creative influences. His 2009 debut novel London and The South East, based on his experience of working in telesales, won the Betty Trask Award. The author of six books, his work often defies easy classification: his 2016 novel All That Man Is comprises nine standalone short stories which share the overarching theme of masculinity. His 2018 novel Turbulence follows 12 loosely-linked characters on a dozen flights around the world. In 2025 he won the Booker with Flesh, a rags to riches story told across several decades. Rose Tremain

Dame Rose Tremain is one of Britain’s most prolific and popular writers, having written 17 novels and five collections of short stories over the last 50 years. She was one of only six women on Granta magazine's inaugural 1982 list of the best young British novelists, alongside Martin Amis, Ian McEwan, Salman Rushdie and others. Her fifth novel Restoration was nominated for the Booker Prize in 1989, she won the Whitbread Prize for Music And Silence in 1999, and was awarded the 2008 Orange Prize - the precursor to the Women’s Prize for Fiction - for her novel The Road Home. Having already been made a CBE in 2007, she became Dame Rose Tremain in 2020 for services to writing. Her most recent work is a short story called The Toy Car. Rose Tremain tells John Wilson how her father, a largely unsuccessful playwright called Keith Thomson, inspired her childhood interest in storytelling, although he never encouraged her to write. She recalls how she first started writing fiction to help her cope with loneliness in a household where there was little parental affection. Rose recalls how it was a teacher at her boarding school who first recognised her ability and encouraged her to apply for an Oxbridge university place, only to be dissuaded by her mother, who sent her to a finishing school in France instead. She credits the novelist Angus Wilson, one of her English Literature tutors at the University Of East Anglia, for giving her the confidence to write her first novel. She also chooses The Diary Of Samuel Pepys as a major inspiration on her 1989 Booker-shortlisted novel Restoration, which was later turned into a Hollywood film starring Robert Downey Jnr. and Meg Ryan. تُعد قصة «قضية موظف المدينة» (The Case of the City Clerk) لملكة الجريمة أجاثا كريستي واحدة من أشهر قصص مجموعة «تحريات باركر باين» الصادرة عام 1934م. تبدأ الأحداث عندما يلجأ الموظف البسيط «السيد روبرتس» إلى المحقق الخبير «باركر باين» يشكو رتابة حياته ومللها؛ فبعد سنوات طويلة من الكفاح والتقتير لإعالة أسرته، شعر بالرغبة في خوض مغامرة حقيقية وشعور بالخطر ولو لمرة واحدة. يدفع روبرتس مبلغ 5 جنيهات للمحقق، فيُكلفه باين بنقل مستندات سرية عبر قطار أوروبا نحو جنيف وباريس؛ موهماً إياه بأنه يحمل شفرة مكان الجواهر الملكية الروسية المطاردة من البلاشفة، بينما في الحقيقة كان يحمل مخططات مدفع عسكري سري موجهة إلى عصبة الأمم سعى المحقق لتسليمها بأمان بعيداً عن أعين الجواسيس. تتحول الرحلة إلى مغامرة مثيرة؛ حيث يتسلم روبرتس مسدساً صغيراً، وتبادل كلمات سر غامضة عن العطور، ويلتقي بالحسناء «الدوقة أولجا» (التي جسدت دورها عميلة فريق باين «مادلين ديسارا»). وتعهد الفتاة إليه بجوارب محشوة بجواهر باهظة لحمايتها. وعندما يباغتهما الجاسوس «فاسليفيتش» بغاز الكلوروفورم، يتصرف روبرتس بشجاعة مذهلة؛ فيرتدي زيّ ومقعد كمساري القطار، وينقذ الفتاة ويفر بها عبر سيارات الأجرة في باريس ثم الطائرة إلى لندن. ينتهي المطاف بتكريم روبرتس بـ «وسام سانت ستانسلاوس» ومكافأة 50 جنيهاً، ليعود إلى بيته وأسرته مفعماً بالفخر والثقة، وقد استعاد شغف الحياة بعدما حظي بمغامرته المنشودة.
