    332. Rethinks: Learn Faster and Fail Smarter

“You learn nothing when you’re right.”  Effective communication isn’t about having all the answers. As Astro Teller knows, it’s about finding, and sometimes fumbling, your way through the questions. As Captain of Moonshots at X, Alphabet’s Moonshot Factory, Teller embraces what he calls “a learning journey,” where being wrong isn’t the end, but an opportunity to discover something new. In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Teller and Matt Abrahams discuss how embracing uncertainty drives innovation, why leaders should reward learning over outcomes, and why sometimes being wrong is the best way to learn. Takeaways: Being wrong is where learning happens. Treating failure as useful information rather than something to avoid helps you stay curious, test assumptions, and discover better paths forward. Reward the habits that lead to innovation, not just the outcomes. Focusing on curiosity, humility, and experimentation creates space for people to take meaningful risks and pursue ideas that may not work the first time. Activity: Find the failure faster. Choose one idea or project you’re confident about and identify the assumption most likely to prove you wrong. Design one small test that could challenge that assumption, then treat whatever you learn as progress.Episode Reference Links: Astro TellerAstro’s Book: Sacred CowsEp.237 Mistake It Till You Make It: Learn Faster and Fail SmarterEp.70 Ideas Fuel Innovation: Why Your First Ideas Aren't Always the BestEp.20 Question Your Questions: How to Spark Creativity in Your Communication   Connect: Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedIn Chapters: (00:00) - Introduction (01:33) - Defining a Moonshot (03:35) - Building a Learning Mindset (06:15) - Learning vs. Productivity (07:50) - Sharing Learning Across Teams (10:04) - Rewarding Habits, Not Outcomes (12:32) - Destigmatizing Failure (15:12) - Moonshots in Action (18:51) - Storytelling for Understanding (20:11) - Using Analogies Effectively (22:15) - Fostering Creativity Through Play (25:20) - Hiring for a Moonshot Culture (27:57) - The Moonshot Podcast (29:44) - The Final Three Questions (34:19) - Conclusion ********Thank you to our sponsors.  These partnerships support the ongoing production of the podcast, allowing us to bring it to you at no cost. Optimism Is Now an Essential Leadership Skill

Optimism isn’t about ignoring problems or pretending everything will work out. It’s about acknowledging challenges while believing that your actions can still make a difference. Psychologist and researcher Michelle Gielan says leaders can cultivate that mindset in themselves and their teams and argues that, when they do, it creates a powerful performance advantage. Drawing on an 11-year dataset of more than 25,000 business professionals, she shares research linking optimism to higher productivity, sales, engagement, and lower burnout. She explains how leaders can use techniques like “power leads" to help teams focus on progress and possibility without losing sight of difficult realities. Gielan wrote the book Resilient Optimism: The Science of Sustaining a Positive Mindset in Tough Times and the HBR article "How Leaders Counter Pessimism in Trying Times."

How AI Is Changing Talent, Not Just Tasks: Rethinking Where Human Judgment Matters Most

The decisions leaders must make about AI today go far beyond what platforms to invest in: AI is changing organizational culture and leadership for good. In episode 1 of a special four-part series on how AI is changing leadership, we look at how the technology is changing how people interact at work, the new culture it is creating, and how leaders can get smart about talent management and strategy in this rapidly advancing world. Paula Goldman, Salesforce’s chief ethical and humane use officer, argues there's currently a big opportunity to redesign work around the complementary strengths of humans and AI. She explains how AI could reshape entry-level jobs and the development of future leaders, why companies need to rethink internal mobility and talent development, and how executives can prepare their organizations for an AI-powered workforce without sacrificing accountability, creativity, or trust. Goldman is the author of Manage the Machine: How to Harness Human-AI Collaboration at Work.

UFO Cover-Up Analyst: The Secret Alien Programs Nobody Is Talking About | Eric Weinstein

Are we racing towards a global crisis while leaders keep us in the dark? Eric Weinstein exposes the forces driving artificial intelligence, geopolitical collapse, and the illusion of modern reality. Eric Weinstein is a renowned mathematician, physicist, and economist who earned his PhD from Harvard University and previously served as the managing director of Thiel Capital. Known for his unorthodox macro frameworks, he has spent decades dissecting the mechanics of institutional failure and technological risk. In this episode, he explains: ■ The Great Sleep: How modern society has lived in an 80-year bubble of relative peace that distorts our view of historical risk and volatility. ■ Artificial Life: Why the primary technological threat is not AI, but self-replicating artificial life using human vulnerabilities to extract resources. ■ Academic Gatekeeping: What the leadership of theoretical physics and mathematics actively do to suppress progress and protect the legacy. ■ Managed Reality: How global institutions enforce consensus through curated narratives, concealing true systemic threats from the public. ■ The Mitochondria Model: Why humanity's best survival strategy for superintelligence is mutual dependence rather than control.
