  • How to Calm Your Nervous System: 4 Ways to Sleep Better, Stress Less and Build Resilience with Dr Kristen Holmes #691

    28 Oct

How to Calm Your Nervous System: 4 Ways to Sleep Better, Stress Less and Build Resilience with Dr Kristen Holmes #691

Are you in control of your nervous system – or is it in control of you? It's a question that deserves your attention, because the answer affects everything from how well you sleep to how you react when life is hard. And my guest this week believes most of us have more agency than we realise. Dr Kristen Holmes is Global Head of Human Performance and Principal Scientist at the wearable-tech company WHOOP. She’s also a former US national field hockey player and one of the most successful coaches in Ivy League history. In her new book, Aligned, she argues that a well-regulated nervous system is the foundation for our health, performance and relationships. We start by exploring what a balanced nervous system looks like in daily life, why some people need to begin with their body and others with their mind, and why Kristen prefers the word agency to control. Kristen then talks me through a study she led with WHOOP, in which 39,000 of its members tried four simple, free daily behaviours, and what happened to their sleep and heart health as a result. She explains why most of us have no idea when our body naturally wants to fall asleep, why sleep consistency predicts health more strongly than sleep quantity or quality – and the single metric she believes reveals most about someone’s health. We also cover why variety matters in how we move, why eating earlier suits our metabolism, and why so many of us fall ill as soon as we go on holiday. And Kristen shares a powerful 72-hour exercise for auditing your daily actions against your values. In the second half, the conversation becomes deeply personal. Kristen talks about growing up around alcoholism, the trauma she experienced as a child, and how she found her way to forgiveness through curiosity. We discuss emotions rooted in trust versus fear, the role of nostalgia, and how joy differs from happiness. She also shares the meditation practice that helped her learn to love herself, and the science showing how it benefits the body. This is a conversation for anyone who wants practical, evidence-based steps to better sleep, energy and resilience. But, perhaps more importantly, it’s for anyone who senses that lasting change also requires some inner work. Kristen brings both the data and the lived experience – and I think everyone will find something here to carry into their own life. • What’s Really in Your Beef | Mollie Engelhart

What’s Really in Your Beef | Mollie Engelhart

Can we vote our way out of the mess we’re in? Mollie Engelhart of Sovereignty Ranch in Bandera, Texas doesn’t think so. Neither does Thomas Massie, who told the crowd at the Weston A. Price Wise Traditions conference that your votes aren’t being stolen at the ballot box. They’re being stolen on the first day of Congress. Mollie and Dr. Ben sit down fresh off that conference to talk about what’s actually happening, what’s being done about it, and why the real revolution looks a lot more like buying a half a cow from your neighbor and trading peaches for raw milk than anything happening in Washington. They also go deep on an article Mollie published that almost nobody in mainstream media would touch. At a conference in North Dakota, a cattle industry insider showed her a research poster she couldn’t believe was real. 19% of steers and over 50% of heifers in conventional beef production are lactating at the time of harvest. She went down the rabbit hole. She reached out to the researchers. She published the findings. And then the silence was deafening from every major outlet on both sides. The episode covers the estrogen and hormone implants used throughout conventional cattle production, why the researchers say it’s actually obesity causing the lactation, why Mollie isn’t convinced without a control group, and what all of this excess estrogen exposure means for human health downstream. Then they pivot to what Sovereignty Ranch is actually doing. No antibiotics. No vaccines. Holistic planned grazing. Cows eating a diverse range of plants from land that gets healthier every year. And a restaurant where people walk in and feel the presence of God before they even order. This one is wide ranging, honest, and worth your time.

  • The Real Root of ADHD Isn't Trauma, It's This | Dr. Sasha Hamdani

The Real Root of ADHD Isn't Trauma, It's This | Dr. Sasha Hamdani

That feeling when a small comment ruins your entire day? There's actually a name for it, and it's not a character flaw. Dr. Sasha Hamdani is a board certified psychiatrist and ADHD specialist who spent years thinking something was fundamentally wrong with her before she connected the dots between her emotions and her ability to function. She was diagnosed with ADHD in fourth grade but her parents never told her, calling her medication a “vitamin” until she found out by accident in medical school, mid breakdown, after a grade crash she couldn't explain. In this conversation she breaks down why ADHD is genetic rather than trauma driven, why women are diagnosed on average at 35 instead of childhood, and why so many get handed antidepressant after antidepressant for the wrong diagnosis. She also opens up about rejection sensitive dysphoria, the moment her father's sudden death taught her that unregulated emotion can shut down your whole life, and the years she spent secretly dating her now husband while terrified of rejecting her family's expectations. If you've ever felt like your emotions hijack your entire day, or you've been told to just calm down when your whole nervous system feels like it's on fire, this one will change how you see yourself. Pre-Order Too Sensitive: Rejection, Resilience, and the Science of Feeling Deeply Self-Care for People with ADHD: 100+ Ways to Recharge, De-Stress, and Prioritize You! Dr. Hamdani Instagram In this episode you will: Distinguish real ADHD from anxiety, trauma, and depression so you stop cycling through the wrong diagnosis and medications Uncover why women are diagnosed with ADHD nearly three decades later than men, and what that misdiagnosis actually costs Recognize Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) as a neurological response, not a character flaw, so you can finally make sense of overwhelming emotional pain Replace well-meaning but harmful advice like “just calm down” with language that actually helps someone spiraling from rejection Transform deep sensitivity into a genuine strength instead of a source of shame Build emotional regulation habits early so grief, rejection, and stress stop hijacking your ability to function For more information go to https://lewishowes.com/1972 More SOG episodes we think you’ll love! • How To Find Purpose In An Age Of Emptiness with Arthur Brooks #675

    1 Sept

How To Find Purpose In An Age Of Emptiness with Arthur Brooks #675

Why does struggling for something make it more satisfying? And why can getting what you want leave you feeling flat? In this episode, I sit down with Arthur Brooks, one of the world's leading voices on the science of happiness, for a conversation that might change how you feel about your life. Arthur is a professor at Vanderbilt University, senior fellow of Harvard Business School and bestselling author of multiple books, including new title, The Meaning Of Your Life. He walked away from a successful career when he realised that despite a happy marriage, strong faith and good income, he struggled to feel happy. That personal reckoning led him to years of research into what really makes people thrive – and in this conversation, he shares the framework he developed to explain it. Using an analogy from nutrition science, Arthur describes happiness as requiring three macronutrients: enjoyment, satisfaction and meaning. We talk about why so many high achievers get the first one wrong. Suffering and struggle, he says, aren’t obstacles to a fulfilling life but essential ingredients of it – hence removing all friction from our lives can leave us feeling empty rather than content. We also get into goals, and why reaching them tends not to deliver the lasting happiness we expect. Arthur calls this the arrival fallacy, and understanding might change how you approach your next big challenge. On relationships, Arthur shares research showing that the healthiest marriages are not the ones with the least conflict, but the ones with the most honesty. We talk frankly about what that has looked like in our own marriages, what we can all learn from our parents when it comes to happiness, and the best (and easiest) way to send a positive message to our children. Arthur also shares what he’s learned about presence, faith and love from his relationship and his daily practices. We explore the difference between solitude and loneliness and how levels of social connection can be individual. And I hope you’ll pay attention to the section on why leisure needs to be treated as seriously as work. This is a warm, honest and personal conversation with someone who’s spent decades studying happiness – but who’s candid about how hard he’s worked to feel it himself. By reframing happiness as a direction not a destination, I think it could be a life-changing listen for you.   The Thrive Tour: Transform Your Health and Happiness, a live show: Book Your Tickets https://drchatterjee.com/live   Thanks to our sponsors: https://exhalecoffee.com/livemore https://boncharge.com/livemore https://drinkag1.com/livemore   Show notes https://drchatterjee.com/675   DISCLAIMER: The content in the podcast and on this webpage is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
