Dominic Frisby / Sound Money vs Fiat Delusion Ep 541

Dominic Frisby: comedian, author, and one of the sharpest voices on gold, Bitcoin, and government money. His main argument is that CPI figures have created a mass delusion effect, which hides the fact most Western countries have been in recession for years. Note: Views expressed in this one may trigger Keynesian belief systems and left-wing ideologies. Sorry about that. Book in a free 15-min phone call with Darcy Ungaro (financial adviser). Francisco Colombo / How To Seize Control Of The Money, Ep 540

In Argentina, currency collapse forced people to understand money. In New Zealand, we're too comfortable to ask where inflation comes from. In this episode, Francisco Colombo from Bitcoin Journey joins me to unpack how Bitcoin is being used in Queenstown's Bitcoin Basin: not as a speculative bet, but as a real, working alternative to cash. We cover self-custody, why Bitcoin passes (or fails) the classic tests of money, how New Zealand's tax treatment shapes everyday use, and why this is ultimately about self-sovereignty, not "number go up." If you're Bitcoin-curious but haven't done the research yet, come along this week in Auckland to get some free education. Book in a free 15-min phone call with Darcy Ungaro (financial adviser). Jarrod Kerr / "It's Too Soon For 2.75%" Ep 539

The Reserve Bank of NZ has hiked the OCR (official cash rate) twice off the lows and says the recovery has “most likely resumed, but remains uneven.” Headline inflation is 4.1% because of fuel, but if you take that out, you’re at 2.9% (inside the target band). I think the question is simple: can the Kiwi economy handle the hikes, or do we get a forced cut and a longer grind? My guest is Jarrod Kerr, chief economist at Kiwibank. David Seymour / 1 Year Bright Line For Digital Assets? Ep 538

Everyday investors will have access to 24/7 share trading in the form of tokenised securities, but there's a problem. NZ rules are built for a paper-era and no one wants to stick their neck out. Deputy Prime Minister and ACT leader David Seymour talked to me last Friday about their new proposal: A one-year bright-line test on digital-asset gains. Will this unlock NZ's digital economy? It might. Learn how to take greater control of your KiwiSaver: Book in a 15-min phone call with Darcy Ungaro (financial adviser). Sign up to the fortnightly newsletter! Tim Doyle / The IRD & What Defines A 'Taxable Event'? Ep 537

Check out my Substack here. Tim Doyle, crypto currency tax expert joins me on this one to talk about a recent case where a client of his posted Bitcoin as collateral to take out a fiat currency loan. The idea is to borrow cash, without ever selling Bitcoin, much in the same way you might top up your mortgage to free up cash without having to sell your home. But Inland Revenue's response was to classify the posting of collateral as a disposal - Which means it’s a taxable event. What's the big deal? If the world is heading more digital (and it is), then will other types of borrowing potentially trigger tax obligations too? Book in a free 15-min phone call with Darcy Ungaro (financial adviser). Ed McKnight / NZ's Worst Property Market in Over 50 Years? Ep 536

We’ve been through plenty of property cycles in New Zealand, but this one feels different. It's been called the worst downturn in 50, or even 60 years. Auckland and Wellington have been hit hardest, while other parts of the country are holding up far better (and in a few places, still growing.) Today I’m joined by economist Ed McKnight from Opes Partners to unpack what’s really going on. We’ll look at the numbers, the regional split, why some Australians are starting to eye New Zealand property again, and why trying to predict the exact bottom is usually a fool’s errand. Ben Davin & Mark White-Robinson / Who Should Have To Fix YOUR Retirement? Ep 535

An economist [I used to respect] was recently asked, why is debt getting more expensive? His response? "this is what happens when your economy is starting to show some growth and the risk for inflationary pressures shift upward." It’s almost like our economists care too much about getting a job at the RBNZ than they do speaking the truth. Read more. Meanwhile, just over half of all Kiwis, feel unprepared for retirement (and that includes debt-free homeowners who thought they’d done everything right.) Something has to be done to fix this, but is asking the government to make more rules around KiwiSaver really the right answer? Ben Davin and Mark White-Robinson join me to discuss. Mikey Smith & Kevin Whitmore / NZ Bitcoin Safe Haven? Ep 534

If New Zealand approved a 'de minimus' tax exception for small Bitcoin transactions, we might become a magnet for the type of people who could make this country great again. This conversation was recorded before the Coldcard exploit, which cost hundreds of holders their coins, was known. I'm joined by Mikey Smith, founder and CEO of Guardian Smith and Treasurer of Bitcoin Policy New Zealand, and Kevin Whitmore, Chair of Bitcoin Policy New Zealand: two people who live and breathe this stuff, and who bring both the policy chops and the on-the-ground perspective to make sense of it. Is it a good idea for you to own Bitcoin in your KiwiSaver? Book in a free 15-min phone call with Darcy Ungaro (financial adviser). Sign up to the fortnightly newsletter!
