Tim Doyle / The IRD & What Defines A 'Taxable Event'? Ep 537

Check out my Substack here. Tim Doyle, crypto currency tax expert joins me on this one to talk about a recent case where a client of his posted Bitcoin as collateral to take out a fiat currency loan. The idea is to borrow cash, without ever selling Bitcoin, much in the same way you might top up your mortgage to free up cash without having to sell your home. But Inland Revenue's response was to classify the posting of collateral as a disposal - Which means it’s a taxable event. What's the big deal? If the world is heading more digital (and it is), then will other types of borrowing potentially trigger tax obligations too? Book in a free 15-min phone call with Darcy Ungaro (financial adviser). Ed McKnight / NZ's Worst Property Market in Over 50 Years? Ep 536

We’ve been through plenty of property cycles in New Zealand, but this one feels different. It's been called the worst downturn in 50, or even 60 years. Auckland and Wellington have been hit hardest, while other parts of the country are holding up far better (and in a few places, still growing.) Today I’m joined by economist Ed McKnight from Opes Partners to unpack what’s really going on. We’ll look at the numbers, the regional split, why some Australians are starting to eye New Zealand property again, and why trying to predict the exact bottom is usually a fool’s errand. Ben Davin & Mark White-Robinson / Who Should Have To Fix YOUR Retirement? Ep 535

An economist [I used to respect] was recently asked, why is debt getting more expensive? His response? "this is what happens when your economy is starting to show some growth and the risk for inflationary pressures shift upward." It’s almost like our economists care too much about getting a job at the RBNZ than they do speaking the truth. Read more. Meanwhile, just over half of all Kiwis, feel unprepared for retirement (and that includes debt-free homeowners who thought they’d done everything right.) Something has to be done to fix this, but is asking the government to make more rules around KiwiSaver really the right answer? Ben Davin and Mark White-Robinson join me to discuss. Mikey Smith & Kevin Whitmore / NZ Bitcoin Safe Haven? Ep 534

If New Zealand approved a 'de minimus' tax exception for small Bitcoin transactions, we might become a magnet for the type of people who could make this country great again. This conversation was recorded before the Coldcard exploit, which cost hundreds of holders their coins, was known. I'm joined by Mikey Smith, founder and CEO of Guardian Smith and Treasurer of Bitcoin Policy New Zealand, and Kevin Whitmore, Chair of Bitcoin Policy New Zealand: two people who live and breathe this stuff, and who bring both the policy chops and the on-the-ground perspective to make sense of it. Is it a good idea for you to own Bitcoin in your KiwiSaver? Book in a free 15-min phone call with Darcy Ungaro (financial adviser). Sign up to the fortnightly newsletter! Joel Robinson / The Active Investment Strategy, That Works! Ep 533

The most common manifestation of active investing is timing the market. Get out at the top, sit in cash, wait for the crash, then jump back in. I see a lot of investors thinking and doing this right now, and while it's understandable, what happens if everyone's looking at the same information? Read full article (not AI). Francis Hunt / If It Can't Go On, It Stops. Ep 532

On the 23rd of June 2026, something happened to the South Korean index that hasn't happened since 1980. Francis Hunt (aka 'The Market Sniper') thinks this may be the canary in the coal mine which could trigger, not just an AI 'correction', but a global credit event. Is he a doomer, or someone with a different set of incentives? As usual, this isn't financial advice, but I do hope it gets you thinking. Darcy Ungaro / When Is It Time To Sell Gold? Ep 530

The way I see it, the biggest financial mistake most people make isn't getting in wrong - it's getting out wrong. As an example, gold is down 25% from its all-time high. If you hold any investment that drops this much within 6 months you're prone to wondering if you called it wrong. Today I want to be honest about that. Not to reassure you, and not to panic you, but to use this as an example in how to ask the question of yourself - when's the best time for you to exit your favourite investment?
