E & T are back this week catching up about Erica's grandfather passing, and Teresa heading home to help out with her family. T also received a call from the Irish Bus Driver, and managed to keep her peace. The gals also discuss how going through tough times can highlight their singleness. Growing up, we spent a lot of time going to New Jersey to see our relatives and I got to see a whole different world, and frankly, a different culture. While in upstate ny we were the Italian family, who would eat Nutella sandwiches and fresh Mozzarella, but in New Jersey we were the country cousins who played in the woods and listened to country music. Getting to weehawken on a Friday night usually meant a lot of traffic and not pulling into my grandparents driveway until very late, but still, my grandmother would be waiting with a million kisses and my grandfather would have fresh mozz, pastries from the bakery, and prbably some espresso. Of course, my nana would do most of the talking and my grandfather just liked to watch. He enjoyed the simple things in life. A nice walk, a bike ride, watching us goof around on the playground, fresh seafood, and learning how to fix things instead of throwing them away. Later in life he opened up a bit and explained that he learned English so late, but stopped speaking Italian daily, that he felt he wasn’t an expert in either language, but he showed his love through his actions, his commitment to family, his work ethic, and being present. It was partially his choice to come to America, and stay in America. He managed to send two girls to college AWAY from home, showing a commitment to education and assimilation, but still keeping his roots by keeping family traditions and prioritizing time together as a family. There’s a thousand stories I could tell, but one that sticks with me is when we went for a walk together and I remember getting tired and wanting to take breaks going up a steep hill and in his old age he would keep a steady pace that was hard to keep up with. I remember thinking, “Holy crap, he’s going to live forever.” Sadly, I was wrong, but his memories will live with me. Love ya papa
