495: We are All the Walking Wounded: Trauma-Informed Coaching

I’m thrilled to welcome back a previous guest today! Her first appearance was in Episode 232 back in 2020. She helps us get clear on something that confuses many coaches: What does it mean to be “trauma-informed,” and why does it matter for every single one of our clients? We will uncover the neuroscience, practical moves, and the truth about what’s happening in the nervous systems of the people we coach. We take a closer look at the difference between coaching and therapy, why there is always an overlap, and where the dividing line lies between big emotions, coaching, and therapy. Join us! Dr. Kemia Sarrah, “Dr. K”, is an internist, educator, physician, and leadership coach. Her subspecialty is a focus on leadership and coaching in and beyond severe burnout, toxic stress, and trauma. She is the founder and CEO of Lodestar, a professional coaching and consulting firm that utilizes a 360-degree trauma-aware container for coaching, coach training, leadership training, and Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion facilitation. Her medical degree and Master of Public Health are from the University of Utah School of Medicine, and she currently serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in the Office of Equity, Diversity & Inclusion. Dr. K is a gifted storyteller and sought-after speaker with a deeply intuitive communication style, and her trademarked coaching paradigm has a lens focused on the secondary trauma that is part of daily life for high-achieving, hard-driving, and highly skilled professionals across various industries. Blending extensive experience with balance, humor, and endless empathy, Dr. K has helped countless physicians and professionals rediscover their professional pride, joy, and internal balance. She lives with her physician-husband on a small, working farm in Central Illinois, where they are raising four sons and too many farm critters to count. Show Highlights: The question at the crux of it all: How can coaching and trauma co-exist in the same work? All Lodestar programs are dual-accredited by the ICF and the ACCME, meeting the rigorous standards for both coaching and medical education.Understanding the overlaps and distinctions between coaching and therapyPositioning yourself as a coach who is trauma-informed and trauma-responsive, being a “skilled holder” of what the client brings into the conversationLaying the foundation of the coach/client relationship in the beginningTrauma: more than events in time, but exposure over time (“The dose makes the poison.”)Understanding stress (not always a bad thing!), its effects, like loneliness and uncertainty, and long-term stress exposureThe neuroscience of the “unsafe” brain: It cannot update its predictions, learns the wrong things, and cannot differentiate between predator threats and social threats.Recognizing the path forward with our clients: The stories our nervous system tells follow the state of our nervous system as a whole.“We are all the walking wounded. What you are experiencing is very real.”The key message from Dr. K: “Coaches are uniquely pre-set to do this exceedingly well. The beauty of this skillset is that it’s rooted in the similarities of our nervous system; these skills are universally teachable, learnable, and applicable.” Resources: Connect with Dr. Kemia Sarraf Website, Facebook, and SCS Episode 232 Connect with Meg Explore the STaR Coach Show Mentor Program. Building a coaching business when the world is unstable is hard enough; doing it in isolation is exponentially more difficult. The world needs coaches right now more than ever, but the question is whether you have positioned yourself to be found. We will walk through six concrete pillars for building a client pipeline that holds up in hard times, and we close with a candid look at the mental and emotional side of sustainability with a reminder that no coach should be building alone. There’s no toxic positivity here, just an honest look at reality and a grounded path forward. Join us! 490: AI: A Coach's Ultimate Thought Partner with Ron West, PCC

AI is all around us! Is it a threat or an opportunity? How do coaches make sure to stay in the driver’s seat and engage with AI in an ethical, yet productive way? The bottom line is that AI can serve as a powerful multiplier for coaches—not a replacement for them. You’ll learn how today’s guest leverages the power of AI in various ways to organize his life’s work and enhance client deliverables. His enthusiasm for AI is balanced by practical caution, emphasizing that the coach must always be the one “driving the bus.” Join us to learn more! Ron J. West is an executive coach and the founder of West Executive. For more than two decades, he has worked with senior leaders navigating complexity and change. He is the creator of the Chrysalis ecosystem, which comprises leadership experiences built around a simple idea: when leaders expand how they think and lead, the organizations and systems they serve can also evolve. Ron is a repeat guest on the STaR Coach Show, and we’re thrilled to visit with him again! 489: The Humble Farmer Coach: Harvest Before You Plant with Meg Rentschler, MSW, PCC

In this solo episode, Meg opens with a candid confession about her early coaching tendency to rescue and solve, and she uses it as a springboard into one of the deepest conversations in her coaching philosophy: the discipline of restraint. Drawing on decades of coaching and mentoring more than 2,000 coaches, Meg explores what it truly means to stay in wonder rather than knowing, to harvest before you plant, and to hold every offering with open hands. This episode is an invitation to coaches at every stage to examine where they may be shortcutting client transformation—and how to stop. Show Highlights: My confession about the Rescuer in meThe coach who robs their client with their knowing: Learn what it looks like. The neuroscience behind the struggle to create meaning, ownership, and the Aha experience (The journey is where transformation lives.)What it means to stay in wonder rather than knowing (It’s the difference between a coach who’s waiting for their turn to speak and a coach who is genuinely present to what’s unfolding.)The art of coaching is the art of getting out of the way. (Being helpful is not the same as being transformative.)Questioning to create an invitation instead of presuming the answerA coach’s most powerful tool: helping the client examine what they believe to be trueUnderstanding the coach’s role in dealing with blocks AND openings (Learn to expand the lens.)The “harvest before you plant” metaphor as it applies to coaching (The coach must fully receive before offering something.)A strong attachment to our offering harms the coaching process and makes it “all about us.”Understanding partnership as fundamental equalityThe differences between a coach-driven session and a client-driven session5 practices to try:Notice your impulses to share.Ask one more open question before you offer anything.Harvest before every plant.Practice the language of non-attachment.Fall in love with the pause.
