What does living a longer, healthier, and more fulfilling life mean to you? How can you achieve that goal and does achieving that goal start the same for everyone? Per usual there is an abundance of information out that can be highly contradictory to each other and there is also a lot of narrative and research even showing results that are based on ulterior motives. Is it better to follow the research that says go vegetarian because animal proteins are not good for humans? Could it be better to stick with data that supports high quality proteins from an animal based diet? Dr. Gabrielle Lyon is joining Tom for another informative conversation about how transparent conversations, research and data need to be shared to better inform people about the best ways to protect muscle and thus achieve longer, healthier, more fulfilling high-quality lives. Being focused on strength and the functionality of muscles and what is required to maintain and build healthy muscle is a must for anyone thinking about longevity.

    QUOTES:

“You're existing in this incredibly delicate balance between what you eat, your insulin response to what you eat, and the muscle that you carry, and how much you use it.” Tom Bilyeu [2:44]

“The body thrives under activity, and whether you take a human, whether you take an animal, if you essentially domesticate them, and they are not training, they will lose muscle.” [6:50]

“You have to be very careful about how you want to age and this concept of longevity.” [23:16]

“Muscle is necessary, but not sufficient. You have to both have muscle and a diet that isn't overwhelming your system.” Tom Bilyeu [27:29]

“Our expectation is now to lower the quality of evidence to be able to say, well, no plant and animal protein are the same. No, they're not!” [31:01]

“Skeletal muscle is an organ system, just like the thyroid. It should be tested and treated as such.” [40:50]

If you’ve been following me for any length of time, you’ve probably heard about the years I spent chasing money - and how it left me emotionally bankrupt.

Don’t get me wrong - money is a powerful force. It gives you the ability to close your eyes, imagine something that you want to create, and then open your eyes and actually be able to go out there and do it.

However, I’ve also found that people have wildly different opinions on money, how we should relate to it, and how it affects our levels of happiness and fulfillment.

But what do people who have really mastered the game of money have to say about it?

What constitutes a wealthy life? How should we define success? How do we create and monetize long-term value for those we serve?

Todays’ episode of Impact Theory answers those questions, and many more. I’ve assembled some of my favorite moments from past guest interviews, all revolving around our relationships with money and financial success.

What was your #1 takeaway from the episode? Let me know in the comments below! 👇

    SHOW NOTES:
00:00 | Ken Honda on shifting your focus around wealth
09:01 | David Rubenstein on children of wealthy families
17:54 | Ramit Sethi on rewriting your invisible scripts around money
28:10 | Tilman Fertitta on forging your own path in business
37:05 | Yancey Strickler on new ways of measuring value

    QUOTES:
“I think wealth is an attitude. If you feel like you're so happy, and so content with what you have, you are already wealthy. But if you have to struggle every day, and you cannot find happiness, either in your business or in your personal life, I think you're not wealthy, even if you have billions in your bank account.” - Ken Honda [05:38]

“Raising children is a complicated thing. If you mess up raising your children, nothing else in life really matters. Your ultimate legacy is not a building named after you, or a scholarship named after you - it's your children” - David Rubenstein [13:50]

“It's not impossible to make money - there's actually a lot of people making money. It's not impossible to get ahead, pay off debt, even invest and grow - there's a lot of people doing it. But if you're surrounded by people who constantly complain about how difficult it is, and it's impossible, guess what? You're going to absorb those invisible scripts.” - Ramit Sethi [19:43]

“You've got to know your God given gifts, and everybody has it. Everybody in this room has it right here. So do what you know was your God given gift and find a way to use that as your path.” - Tilman Fertitta [33:18]

“My assumption was always that financial value is simply the first value we've learned to rationally express - that financial value is a proxy for goodness that is mathematical and that is tradable and that is universal - and that that process can be repeated for other values” - Yancey Strickler [44:48]

We are living through interesting times where gender roles are an ongoing heated discussion. Tempers and passion flare from all sides, but what we cannot ignore is the damage being done to both boys and girls. There have been intense movements that even though they are noble they have caused damage along the way socially in the psyche of young boys and girls. If you follow Tom you’ve heard him say time and time again, we are all having a biological experience. What does this biological experience become when society and doctrine contradict and suppress the nature of our biological experiences? Dr. Warren Farrell joins Tom to discuss his latest book, The Boy Crisis, Why Our Boys Are Struggling and What We Can Do About It. The resolution as Dr. Warren states begins with understanding different sides of the argument. Learning how to steel man the opposing sides' argument will help create a foundation where the real problem, lack of father involvement and fatherless homes, can be addressed for the sake of our boys (and girls).

“The boy crisis resides where dads do not reside.” -Dr. Warren Farrell

Whether you are a father, mother, teacher, leader or fatherless child yourself, this conversation is not to be ignored and forgotten.

“Whenever someone is angry, that angry anger is almost always vulnerability’s mask…” [3:37]

“The boy crisis resides where dads do not reside.” [29:05]

“The children that do the best are the ones that have an involved biological mom and dad.” [32:32]

“One of the biggest mistakes that CEO types make is using their skill sets as a CEO to solve their wife's problem…” [48:21]

“The way to protect her is by hearing her through and hearing her out. That is the solution. So you have to reformulate the method you use to protect.” [51:20]

“I become her hero by helping her become her own hero.” [53:43]

“The second they start realizing that you will provide complete safety for their perspective, there's no reason to shout, there's no reason to exaggerate. There's no reason to lie.” [58:24]

“We have this natural instinct to protect women and therefore create freedoms for them, and to not want men to complain, without looking at them with disgust, or with at least pity.” [1:06:51]

Or perhaps you’re constantly plagued by procrastination, always having a hard time getting past the starting block.

Whatever issues around productivity and self-management you may have, this episode of Impact Theory has you covered.

    QUOTES:
“I know if I'm chilling on a Monday at 1pm, I know I have a problem. I'm outside of the bright lines that I have drawn for myself, which is Monday through Friday, if I'm awake, I'm either working or working out. ” [03:32]

“We don't want to work until we crash - that doesn't make sense. So we're going to take that off the table, because that's like running a marathon and saying, ‘I'm going to run the first mile at a four minute mile pace, and then, whatever - the rest will take care of itself.’” [08:33]

“Remember, doing less is always an option. Now I'm the go hardcore, the push, push, push guy, I love hustle, porn, all of that. But I'm telling you, nothing matters more than fulfillment and joy. And if you're burning yourself out, and you're stressed, and you're crashing, that's not joyful.” [10:59]

“We're not doing discipline because our parents tell us to - we're doing discipline as a test to see if it works to get us towards our goal.” [14:44]

“You want to make it such that you want it badly enough that the discipline becomes easy to stick to, because it's going to move you towards that thing that you really want. But you've got to learn - you've got to learn to want that thing.” [17:46]

“You must establish a value system. There's no right or wrong answer to your values, there's only things that either move you towards your goal, or move you away from your goal.” [20:31]

In a perfect world, we can all eat exactly the same and everyone gains and loses weight the exact same way. Unfortunately, in reality you may have a friend that can kill a whole pizza, have dessert and eat extra fries without gaining an ounce of weight. Others seem to put on weight even looking at a plate of food. What’s the deal? Why is it so easy for some people to gain weight and so hard for others. Why are so many people still sold on the calories in and calories out solution to obesity and weight control? Gary Taubes is an investigative science and health journalist and bestselling author. His latest book, The Case for Keto, tackles a lot of the misinformation around calories and why some people struggle with losing weight even when calories are restricted to the point of a starvation diet. We are led to believe that overeating is the problem, but what if eating too much isn’t what’s making you fat? What if your partner's problem is really how sensitive their body is to storing fat? This interview may be the missing piece of the puzzle that will help you and the people you love make the right diet changes, today.

    QUOTES:

“As long as insulin is elevated, your body's being told not to burn the fat, but the burn the carbs. So if insulin is elevated, carbohydrates are your fuel.” [35:28]

“Carbohydrates are fattening to those of us who fatten easily, not all of us are susceptible [...] if we want to get significant fat out of our fat cells and keep it out, then we have to minimize insulin” [39:30]

“If you're overweight, you have to carb restrict. It's not about eating less, it's about lowering insulin levels.” [58:15]

“If you don't have time to meditate for an hour everyday, you should meditate for two hours.” - Zen Proverb

Think you don’t have time for self-care in stressful times? What if you’re not sure whether you should take a break or continue to grind it out?

When it comes to the subject of self-care, people often have a lot of opinions - some of them make sense, while some of them don’t.

In today’s episode of Impact Theory, I’ll be answering these questions (and more) around how to effectively implement self-care in your life.

I’ll not only share what I believe to be the ultimate foundational self-care routine, I’ll also go into the reasons why you should be taking care of yourself in the first place, what to do if you have low self-esteem, and more.

So whether you’re currently living an easy life or you’re in the middle of the most stressful week of your life, I hope you get value out of this episode and most importantly, I hope you use what you’ve learned to improve your own self-care routine.

    SHOW NOTES:
    00:00 | Introduction
00:38 | How To View Self-Care As Essential To Success
04:40 | When To Refuel vs. Continue To Grind
08:48 | Lack of Self Love? Or Just Bad Prioritizing?
15:36 | Where To Start If You Have Low Self-Esteem
19:06 | Keeping Up With Self-Care During Stressful Times

    QUOTES:
“The reason that I work out, the reason that I prioritize sleep, the reason that I meditate - all of those things are because I know that that's what you need to do in order to cognitively optimize.” [01:55]

“You can't, unfortunately, just tell yourself to love yourself. While it helps a little bit, it's maybe 5%. The other 95% is actually doing something that you think is worthy of respect, actually doing something that makes you feel that you have worth.” [10:19]

“The whole point of life is to optimize for fulfillment and joy. And beating ourselves up, thinking ourselves worthless, do not move us towards that goal.” [11:40]

“If you're doing that - working really hard to get exceptional at something that matters, that the world cares about and that you love, and then you contribute in a way that elevates you and other people - that's the game of fulfillment.” [18:26]

“If you're doing that - working really hard to get exceptional at something that matters, that the world cares about and that you love, and then you contribute in a way that elevates you and other people - that's the game of fulfillment.” [18:26]

“The whole idea is as you lower that stress and anxiety, you get into a calm and creative space where you can problem solve. And so that's the goal - we want to get into a place where we can begin problem solving.” [20:09]

McDonald’s ads?

Why would you have ads for company’s you don’t even believe in? I’ve never heard you talk about how people should go to McDonald’s and eat their food. I understand the ads for “butcher box” no problem. You eat their product. But why would you allow ads for company’s you don’t support yourself, or advocate for others to eat there? I absolutely love hearing from you and your wife. But you have a unicorn company that is worth a billion dollars. Do you really need the ad money from your podcasts? I get it. It’s a way to make more money. But since the ads have been shoved in my face I haven’t been listening to your podcast as much. Thank you for all the wisdom you have shared. It’s incredible. Honestly thank you. I do appreciate the “free” info you put out.
