Ep 227 HIM Geppetto - From Chick-fil-A Manager to El Salvador Missionary

A former runner turned rucker leaves a 200,000-dollar debt story, a cross-country upbringing in rural Georgia, and a Chick-fil-A career to build homes and hope in El Salvador. Clay Clayton Jones, known in F3 as Geppetto, shares how faith, community, and a series of unexpected turns led him to become the leader of Shelter Helps - and why the work there is changing lives one house at a time.Geppetto grew up in Newton, Georgia, ran cross country at Mercer, and spent years thinking church was something you attended rather than something that changed you. But a campus ministry, a life-changing missions trip to South Africa, and a financial crisis that should have ended his path to the field instead became the doorway to something bigger. He and his wife Hannah eventually sold their home, moved to El Salvador with their kids, and stepped into a mission that now helps families living on just a few dollars a day. You'll discover how Shelter Helps works on the ground, from local Salvadoran staff and community partnerships to the practical, dignity-building process of helping families secure land permission, clear property, and receive a real home with a locked door, windows, and a concrete floor. Clay also explains why the ministry's model creates buy-in, how the team reached its 8,000th home, and what it means to hand a Bible and keys to someone who has never had a lock before. We also break down Clay's F3 journey, how a mustache gave him the nickname Geppetto, why rucking became part of his life, and how a 25-hour ruck in El Salvador is being designed to raise funds for more homes. If you want a story about faith in action, brotherhood, and what happens when men turn community into movement, this one lands hard. This episode is especially for men who care about mission, leadership, hard things done for the right reasons, and making a tangible difference. Clay's story will challenge your perspective, sharpen your gratitude, and maybe even send you to El Salvador with a ruck on your back. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 72 | Instruction. Inspection. Correction. | The Whetstone

📌 THE MISSION (SUMMARY) Every morning, men lead workouts through chaos in the gloom — and then leave that leadership in the parking lot. Bill Courtney asked the question nobody has answered: have we ever measured the impact of all the men that don't lead? Our families, workplaces, and communities are paying that unmeasured cost, because we've compartmentalized leadership into a thing we only do inside F3. The Plague brings this one home personally: his daughters have started calling him "Tony" whenever his tone goes short and sharp — and his honest question is how a man exercises command and control without anger. The answer isn't softer leadership. It's knowing which mode of leadership the moment demands. Dredd lays out the framework live on-mic — Instruction, Inspection, Correction — born from watching Army sergeants marshal men, proven on three little girls packing suitcases ("pick up a spot"), and still running today in his law firm. Then the razor that cuts the whole episode: rules are used to control, but regulations are used to achieve. A rule says everyone must wash his own dishes. A regulation says the sink is kept free of dirty dishes — and the people work out the rest themselves. That's why Dark Helmet's house has no rules, only principles, and why his daughters fear nothing. Command and control belongs where the clock is short and the chaos is high. Everywhere else — with your wife, your kids, your people — influence is leadership. Start at the mission, teach the principle behind the practice, lead with the story of how you failed, and never say "you should." That's whetstoning. That's how the blade gets passed. ✅ HIGHLIGHTS ✅ The question nobody has measured: the impact of all the men who don't lead ✅ "Pick up a spot" — command and control from the living room to the courtroom ✅ Instruction. Inspection. Correction. — the triad, assembled live on-mic ✅ Rules vs. regulations: why one controls men and the other achieves outcomes ✅ The shovel flag test — invitation over punishment ✅ The whetstoning method: confidentiality, sympathy, and the story of your failure 💥 Power Quotes "Rules are used to control, whereas regulations are used to achieve." "Influence is leadership. Command and control is a different kind of leadership." "If you start explaining and the explaining is taking longer than me doing, we're done." "You have to be very careful what you allow to be programmed into your mind — because you did that without thinking." "If you don't know what you're driving toward, then it doesn't really matter what you tell a guy to do." "They want to feel like they have purpose, and they are looking very carefully to make sure that you have purpose — because then they feel secure." "A great story is always: here's how I failed, here's what I learned, here's how I applied it the next time, here's how that was successful." ⏱️ CHAPTERS 00:00 Cold Open 01:25 Nantan Update: Kentucky Convergence & Three Brothers 07:54 Army of Normal Folks with Bill Courtney 12:20 The Men Who Don't Lead 13:44 Pick Up a Spot: Command and Control at Home 18:12 Instruction.
