First off ! Love the podcast and have listened to many of your episodes. I am wondering if you can do an episode on gender selection. I need help with that. I’m wondering if you can address what considerations you give to choosing gender ? We lost our male Rhodesian ridgeback last year and I have a 5 year old female golden at home. She is submissive, incredibly balanced and obedient and truly the best dog I’ve ever met. We are starting the process to get a German Shepherd and I want to get a female for a host of reasons but every breeder I talk to says that is a bad idea seeing as I have a female at home. What are your thoughts on gender selection especially when it comes to German Shepherds ? A bit of background that may be helpful. I did soo much training with our ridgeback (my mom said she expected him to be able to do long division with how much work we put into him) but regardless around 2, he started with some pretty annoying leash reactivity and I always felt like he wasn’t totally trustworthy on walks or out and about. He was perfect 95% of the time but 5% he would just lose his marbles. We neutered him at 1. I have 3 small kids (7, 5 and 8 Months) at home and my husband works a lot so I will be the primary trainer and walker. I need something I can take for walks with the kids and not have to cross busy roads with 3 small kids on their bikes to avoid a dog or at the very least create distance. My goal for this next dog is calm, stable, level 3 obedience level, chill at home and be able to go everywhere (walks, soccer games, lunch at a restaurant (sitting outside), open air mall, community events, school pick up etc). I know how a dog ends up depends largely on how you train and socialize it. I am not afraid to do the work and training but also want to give myself and my family the best possible shot at success as possible. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
