I have struggled with depression for 20 years without success because I thought I could heal on my own and I was embarrassed. I felt constant sadness and alone, it was not until I started to trust God that I gained the courage to confront my fear of being a burden to my family. I realized that if I was going to manage my mental illness I needed to seek God, learn more about this silent disease and seek depression treatment. I also needed to build my faith and believe in the power of healing. I knew I had the strength to face the anxiety attacks I was experiencing and begin to address the headaches, stomachaches and trauma I was going through. My life was filled with exhaustion, pain and stress. I had to get out of this dark place. I felt like I was sinking in quicksand and there was no purpose to my life. I got on medication and learned more about my condition.  I implemented strategies that tested my faith, drew closer to God and decided to deal with my anxiety. Now, I am no longer chronically depressed and my relationship with God is stronger than ever. I have left fear behind and I am headed down a new path. 184 | Having A Mental Illness Does Not Mean You Lack Faith

Send us Fan Mail Depression can make you feel like you are sinking in quicksand, especially when you love God and still cannot shake the anxiety, fear, stress, or overwhelming thoughts. We sit with that tension head-on and say it clearly: struggling with mental illness does not mean you lack faith, it does not mean you are weak, and it does not mean God has abandoned you. If you have been functioning at work while breaking down in private, or smiling at church while suffering in silence, you are not the only one. We connect faith and mental health in a way that is honest and practical. We talk about how depression often attacks the mind first and why protecting your mind is critical when negative thoughts get louder and hope feels distant. We lean on scripture as comfort and clarity, including 2 Corinthians 12:9 on grace in weakness, 2 Timothy 1:7 on power, love, and a sound mind, and Isaiah 41:10 on God’s strength for the weary. The goal is not to pretend pain does not exist, but to trust God while walking through it and to remember that the storm cannot last forever. We also get specific about what healing can look like day to day: rest, boundaries, sunlight, movement, reaching out instead of isolating, and getting real support from a therapist, counselor, pastor, doctor, coach, or trusted friend. Medication can be wisdom. Therapy can be strength. Asking for help can be courage. If you are ready for more support, consider one-on-one coaching focused on emotional wellness, faith, and resilience. 183 | Mental Illness Must Be Managed Daily to Decrease, Stress, Worry and Handle Pain

Send us Fan Mail Struggling with sadness and low self esteem? Do you feel alone and overwhelmed?  Are you tired of your mental illness? Are you stressed out? Is your faith waning? Has anxiety turned your life upside and has caused loneliness? Are you worried and fear you will not fulfill your purpose? You are not your mental illness and recognizing you may need help takes courage. I applaud you for being taking the first step to help reduce feelings of overwhelm, pain and anxiety. Depression doesn’t always announce itself with a dramatic crash. Sometimes it’s the quiet slide: the blinds stay closed, your thoughts get louder, and the smallest tasks feel impossible. We get real about what depression management looks like day to day, week to week, and month to month when your mind feels heavy and your motivation disappears. I’m Tamara Trotter, and I share the honest routines I lean on to protect my mental health before a spiral turns into a setback. We talk through practical coping skills you can actually use: building structure, planning ahead to avoid dangerous idle time, and catching negative thoughts early so fear doesn’t run the whole day. I share why movement matters even when you don’t feel like it, from swimming to a simple 15-minute walk around your home, plus why getting sunshine can be a powerful mood support. We also get into connection and accountability, because depression thrives in isolation and too many of us suffer in silence thinking we’re a burden. Then we go where a lot of people avoid going: medication. I explain why taking prescribed medication can be a key part of treatment for depression and mental illness, and why there’s no shame in using every healthy tool available. We end with faith-based encouragement and scriptures that focus on power, love, a sound mind, and renewing your mindset when your brain tries to convince you things won’t improve. If you’re fighting to stay emotionally steady, press play, take notes, and choose one small step today. 182 | Why Stress and Anxiety Make Depression Worse and How Faith Helps You Cope

Send us Fan Mail Struggling with mental Illness, sadness and low self esteem? Do you feel alone and overwhelmed?  Are you tired of your mental illness? Are you stressed out? Is your faith waning? Has anxiety turned your life upside and has caused loneliness? Are you worried and fear you will not fulfill your purpose? You are not your mental illness and recognizing you may need help takes courage. I applaud you for taking the first step to help reduce feelings of overwhelm, pain and anxiety. This episode will help you learn to cope with stress, worry and guilt; reminding you to lean on your faith to see you through. Stress doesn’t always announce itself loudly. Sometimes it looks like waking up already tired, snapping at people you love, losing focus, or feeling that heavy mental fog that makes depression harder to manage. We talk honestly about how stress and worry work together, why worry turns into endless “what if” thinking, and how that cycle can trap your mind in fear, uncertainty, and hopelessness. We also bring the conversation back to faith and to the relief that comes with surrender. We lean on 1 Peter 5:7 and Philippians 4:6–7 as a practical framework for Christian mental health, not just encouragement. I share simple, real-world tools you can use today: pause and breathe to settle your body, pray with specifics, write your thoughts down, control the controllables, and speak truth over your life when your mind wants to spiral. Peace is not pretending everything is fine; it’s learning to take problems one step at a time without letting them own you. If your stress is tied to other people’s problems, hard conversations, or repeating triggers, we walk through how to be proactive instead of reactive. Sometimes the healthiest move is timing, planning, resting, and even “sleeping on it” before you respond. We also talk about gratitude journaling as a way to widen your perspective when depression magnifies the worst-case story. If this helped you breathe a little easier, subscribe, share it with a friend who’s carrying too much, and leave a quick Apple Podcasts review so someone else can find the same hope. 181 | How to Overcome Anxiety, Reduce Stress and Let Go of Guilt

Send us Fan Mail Are you struggling with sadness and low self esteem? Do you feel alone and overwhelmed?  Are you tired of your mental illness? Are you stressed out? Is your faith waning? Has anxiety turned your life upside and has caused loneliness? Are you worried and fear you will not fulfill your purpose? You are not your mental illness and recognizing you may need help takes courage. I applaud you for being taking the first step to help reduce feelings of overwhelm, pain and anxiety. Are you struggling to get out of bed in the morning, have no energy and need help coping with the stress of life?  Is your anxiety causing discomfort and disrupting your day?  You may be suffering with a mental illness and that's ok. Depression doesn’t always come with a clear reason. Sometimes it follows loss, trauma, stress, loneliness, or the pressure of everyday life. Other times it shows up like a fog that won’t lift, leaving you exhausted, disconnected, and wondering why you can’t just “snap out of it.” I’m Tamera Trotter, a Christian, social worker, and depression overcomer, and I’m naming the real reasons people suffer from depression so you can stop blaming yourself and start choosing a path forward.  We talk openly about depression symptoms, situational depression, and the reality of chemical imbalance in the brain, including why you have no control over that piece and why getting help is a strong move. I also share my own story of suffering in silence, finally seeking counseling and medication, and learning how to take ownership of my mental health with practical tools and steady faith. If you’ve felt embarrassed, stuck in bed, or distant from joy, you’re not alone and you’re not weak.  We also go to Scripture for honest language and real comfort, from David’s raw words in Psalms 42 to Jesus’ invitation in Matthew 11:28 for the weary and burdened to find rest. Then we get practical about what to do next: reach out to a therapist or medical provider, lean on an accountability person, track triggers and patterns, and take small steps that add up. I’ll also challenge you to look at toxic relationships that may be keeping you in bondage to depression and consider boundaries that protect your peace.  If you’re ready for structure and support, check the link in the show notes for my 14 Days to Manage Depression resources and join the Win Over Depression Facebook group for encouragement. 180 | 4 Ways to Handle Emotional Pain through Faith, Courage and Self-Care

Some seasons hit so hard you start asking, “Is there a lesson in this, or am I just sinking?” I’m Tamera Trotter, and I built this conversation for the moments when life feels like quicksand, your faith is waning, and you’re not sure how to take the next step without breaking. The truth I come back to is simple: storms don’t last forever, but how we ride them out can shape who we become. You can cope with your depression, by knowing the signs.  You will feel better mentally and emotionally. I walk through four anchors for mental health and emotional wellness during hard times: resiliency, courage, faith, and stamina. We get practical about resiliency as your “bounce back” skill, and I’ll ask you to rate yourself so you can spot where you’re strong and where you need support. Then we shift into courage, not as fearlessness, but as choosing action while you’re afraid. If you’re dealing with depression, anxiety, grief, burnout, or constant stress, that distinction can change how you show up today. To tie it all together, I share a ship-in-a-storm mindset: you can’t control the storm, but you can control your sails, your direction, and your mindset. I also give you a simple daily affirmation to repeat when pressure closes in, and I reflect on Isaiah 41 and the idea of being strengthened over time for what’s ahead. If you’re looking for hope, coping skills, and a steady voice that says “keep going,” press play, then share this with someone who needs it. 178 | How To Find the Courage and Strength to Overcome Your Pain

Depression doesn’t always announce itself, it often slips in through exhaustion, isolation, and the quiet thought, “I can’t do today.” I’m Tamera Trotter, and on Win Over Depression we lean into a different truth: you have resilience inside you, and you can activate it before depression takes hold. We break down what resilience really means. It’s not pretending you’re okay or forcing positivity. Resilience is the ability to bounce forward with wisdom, strength, and faith after life hits you. We talk about the early warning signs of depression and how awareness becomes your first line of defense. From getting out of bed when you want to disappear, to showering and eating breakfast to jumpstart your energy, we focus on small actions that protect your mental health. You’ll also hear how faith strengthens spiritual resilience, even in grief. I share a personal loss and what it teaches about hope, prayer, and holding on to meaningful memories. Then we go practical with coping skills and self-care routines that actually fit real life: 15-minute goals, staying connected because isolation feeds depression, using music to lift your mood, and speaking life over yourself with affirmations that reshape your inner voice. We also explore the difference between coping and resilience, and I walk you through five building blocks you can grow like a muscle: awareness, regulation (including box breathing), perspective, support, and faith. If you’re ready to reclaim your joy one decision at a time, press play, subscribe, and share this with someone who needs hope today. After you listen, leave a review and tell me which building block you’re strengthening first. Support the show One-on-One Coaching with Tamera https://www.pensight.com/x/CoachTamera

Has anxiety turned your life upside and has caused loneliness? Are you worried and fear you will not fulfill your purpose? You are not your mental illness and recognizing you may need help takes courage. I applaud you for taking the first step to help reduce feelings of overwhelm, pain and anxiety. Hard days don’t decide your worth—your next small step does. We unpack what it truly means to “win” with depression and why progress, not perfection, is the most powerful metric you can use. From the first brave act of getting out of bed to setting clean boundaries and letting sunlight shift your chemistry, we map out practical, compassionate ways to keep moving when motivation is thin. We share a new scorecard for victory: hygiene as a win, hydration as a win, opening the curtains as a win, and showing up quietly with friends as a win. You’ll hear how to spot a negative thought without granting it authority, name your feelings so they stop running the show, and protect your energy by saying no without apology. We also talk about the deeper layers—faith that can be as small as a mustard seed, releasing shame that never belonged to you, and trusting that a setback is not the whole story. Because biology matters, we address medication without stigma and pair it with therapy, gentle movement, and brain-friendly nutrition. Learn why reducing sugar helps mood stability and how foods like salmon, leafy greens, avocados, and walnuts support mental health. We offer grounded safety steps for suicidal urges—delay action, sleep, call your person, take meds, and remember no storm lasts forever—along with encouragement to build an accountability net before you need it. You’ll leave with a toolkit of tiny, repeatable actions that add up: one boundary honored, one glass of water, one honest text, one light-filled morning. If this resonated, follow the show, share it with a friend who needs a win today, and leave a review to help others find hope when they need it most.
