    Popper the Poltergeist: The Real Seaford Haunting of 1958

    In February 1958, bottles started unscrewing their own caps and emptying across the floor of a quiet Long Island ranch house while the Herrmann family stood and watched. The papers named the culprit "Popper." History remembers it as the Seaford Poltergeist. Over about five weeks, more than sixty separate disturbances tore through the home at 1648 Redwood Path in Seaford, New York. Bottles popped, a sugar bowl exploded, a bookcase went over, and objects sailed across rooms with nobody standing near them. Police showed up. Reporters showed up. A local detective all but moved in trying to catch someone faking it and left without his hoax. Two parapsychologists from Duke University logged the whole ordeal and walked away with a theory and no tidy ending. This is also the case that loosely inspired one of the most famous horror movies ever made, minus the Hollywood inventions people still repeat as fact. We're staying with what the witnesses actually reported and what the investigators actually wrote down, right up to the possibilities nobody has managed to rule out in almost seventy years. An adolescent boy under stress? A trapped something? A prank committed enough to fool a homicide investigator and a room full of skeptics? You get to decide.     The Dallas Cellar Club: What I Found Five Years Later

    In 2021, Tales From The Dark investigated a job posting for the Dallas Cellar Club: a supposed upscale wine lounge hiring hostesses for twenty-two dollars an hour. What I found instead was a twenty-minute recruitment recording, a rotating cast of phone numbers, and a pattern that looked a lot like something far worse than a bad job. I couldn't prove what it was, and we said so. This is the follow-up. In 2024, a listener reached out with four self-recorded phone calls documenting months of contact with the same operation, now recruiting under a different name. What's on those recordings is worse than anything in the original episode. This time, I traced the operation back over fifteen years, across at least five names and twenty-four cities, and found it's still actively recruiting right now. This episode contains explicit sexual language, racialized degradation, and descriptions of psychological manipulation.  It is not my usual paranormal format. Listener discretion is strongly advised.     Red White and BOO! - Fourth Of July Horror Stories

    The horror stories are back, and this time they're wearing red, white and blue. This one's a shorter throwback to our old horror stories format, an armful of creepy, true-ish tales with a Fourth of July coat of paint. We start in the sky, because the Fourth is the single most common date on the whole calendar for UFO reports, and we land in Tinley Park, Illinois, where the lights over the fireworks came with a very earthly list of suspects and one very unsettling backup location. From there it's a petty little history lesson on why the country's been blowing out the candles two days late since 1776, a batch of facts that includes the president who was taken out by a bowl of cherries, and the reason Jaws is secretly a Fourth of July movie. A listener sends in a haunted house story where a pack of kids goes ghost hunting instead of watching the show, and it ends on a face in a window that more than one of them saw. And we close on the eerie one, the three founding fathers who all died on the Fourth of July, two of them within hours of each other, and the ghosts a few of them supposedly left behind.     The Philadelphia Experiment: The Navy's Invisible Ship Conspiracy

    The Philadelphia Experiment is the most famous ghost story the U.S. Navy ever had to deny: a destroyer escort, the USS Eldridge, supposedly wrapped in a green glow at the Philadelphia Navy Yard in 1943, turned invisible, and teleported to Norfolk and back, leaving sailors fused into the steel decks and others who never came back.  For seventy years it's been passed around as proof of a wartime government cover-up, complete with Einstein, secret unified-field physics, and, later, time travel. This episode follows it all the way down. The real wartime science the legend grew out of, the brilliant drifter who invented the whole thing in a handful of letters, the documents that put the ship hundreds of miles from Philadelphia on the day it supposedly disappeared, and the claims that welded the Eldridge to the Montauk Project and the year 2749.  And one detail almost nobody tells you: the man who sold the Philadelphia Experiment to the world as fact later stood up at a conference and confessed to being a paid government disinformation agent.     Devil's Gate: The Rocket Scientist and the Portal to Hell

    Beneath a freeway overpass in Pasadena, California, there is a hundred-year-old flood-control dam, a tunnel mouth with the word HELL painted above it, and a rock shaped like the face of the devil. Locals call it Devil's Gate, and the stories that cling to it are some of the strangest in the state. In this episode, we climb down into the Arroyo Seco to pull the legend apart from the record. At the center of it is Jack Parsons: the brilliant, self-taught chemist who helped found the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and modern American rocketry, and who recited Aleister Crowley's Hymn to Pan over his rocket tests while running the West Coast's leading Thelemic lodge out of a Pasadena mansion.  We get into the Babalon Working, the 1946 occult ritual Parsons performed alongside future Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. We dig into the Tongva cemetery unearthed in 1938 to build a reservoir, the children said to have vanished at the dam, and the freeway-building serial killer Mack Ray Edwards, whose shadow still falls across the unsolved disappearance of eight-year-old Tommy Bowman.
