“I Want Learning That’s Fun and Hands-On”: A Lighter Way to Keep Learning Going This Summer // 349

Have you ever looked at your child and thought, “This kiddo is really smart, but this worksheet is wearing us both out”? Maybe summer is here. Maybe everyone is tired of regular lessons. Or maybe your child understands much more when they can build, move, measure, draw, cook, talk, explore, or help with something real. In this episode, I’m talking about what to do when the usual lesson is not working and more effort is not the answer. Sometimes the better question is: What is one other way my child could learn this today? Learning is not only what a child writes down. We can also see learning in what a child understood, practiced, remembered, explained, created, or became able to do. I share one of my favorite examples from our homeschool: the time my teenage boys were invited to help a trusted neighbor in his woodshop while he renovated his kitchen. They helped mix and pour concrete, watched cabinets and counters being built, practiced measuring, learned about tools and safety, and saw what happens when a real project does not fit correctly the first time. They were not only reading about measurement, materials, home repair, patience, or problem-solving. They were standing beside someone doing meaningful work and learning why careful attention mattered to the finished result. Of course, tools and equipment must be age-appropriate and supervised by a trustworthy adult. But real work with real people can help a child understand ideas that may be difficult to grasp through a worksheet alone. We also talk about lighter ways to keep learning going through stories, audiobooks, biographies, wholesome movies, cooking, building, painting, gardening, drawing maps, making models, caring for animals, helping with household work, and other useful tasks. The activity does not need to be elaborate. A child can practice fractions while doubling a recipe, read while following directions, use measurement during a project, and learn planning or attention to detail when the finished result has a real purpose. And every child does not have to participate in the same way. A younger child may listen, choose between two materials, hand you items, or watch one step before helping with another. A child with a disability may participate through words, signs, gestures, pictures, body language, or eye gaze. The goal is not to make every child complete the activity in the same way. It is to help each child take part in a way that fits their age, ability, communication, and needs. I also share simple ways to document real-life learning without interrupting the experience or turning every enjoyable moment into a school assignment. You might write one sentence afterward, record a quick audio note, save a short video, or ask your child to show or tell you one thing they noticed. If your child needs a different way to learn today, you do not necessarily need to design an entirely new homeschool plan. Sometimes you simply need a different way for this lesson or this day. You are not failing when your child needs something different. You can stay flexible, notice the meaningful learning that is actually happening, and choose a way forward that fits the child and family God has given you. “I’m Tired of the Work That Never Ends”: How to Prioritize When Everything Feels Important // 348

Have you ever looked at a day full of real needs and thought, “How am I supposed to decide what comes first when all of it matters?” A child needs comfort. A medical form has a deadline. Dinner needs to be made. Lessons are unfinished. You are exhausted—and none of those needs are imaginary. But one mom cannot do every important thing at the same time. In this episode, I’m sharing a quote attributed to Elisabeth Elliot that has been pinned above my desk for about ten years. It became especially meaningful during a season when I was homeschooling, caring for children with additional needs, completing an intensive neurodevelopmental program, and staying up late to write reports that sometimes stretched beyond 60 pages. That quote helped me stop fighting the work that was truly mine to do. But it did not tell me that every important task belonged to me or that everything had to be finished that night. I also share three questions I use when the work feels endless: What really needs care today? What part of this is actually mine to carry? What can I actually do next? We’ll talk about considering health, safety, deadlines, relationships, and your actual capacity. We’ll also talk about accepting help, simplifying what can be simplified, and letting some work wait without believing that means you do not care. And I want to be clear: doing difficult work “gladly” does not mean enjoying suffering, hiding grief, refusing help, acting cheerful when you are hurting, or treating exhaustion as holiness. It means bringing the truth to God, asking Him for wisdom, and offering the work that is truly yours to Him. If you are overwhelmed by constant needs and unfinished work, this episode will help you slow down, ask God for wisdom, and identify the next faithful thing you can do with the time, strength, and help available. Scripture referenced: James 1:5, ESV If you are hearing this episode before July 4, 2026, I would be deeply grateful if you would pray for our family as we seek in-home care for my son. Please also pray for other caregiving families whose constant, complicated, and often unseen work may not be understood by the people around them. “I Want More Time for Fun With My Kids”: Simple Joys for Real-Life Motherhood // 347

Have you ever thought, “I want more time for fun with my kids,” and then immediately felt tired? Fun sounds beautiful, but in real life it can start to feel like one more thing to plan, one more thing to pay for, one more thing to clean up, and one more thing to manage. In this episode, I’m talking about simple joys for real-life motherhood — the kind that fit real budgets, real energy levels, real homes, and real family seasons. I share a few ways our family has been finding small moments of connection lately, from discount movie dates with one child, to a paint-by-number project on the table, to walks, read-alouds, audiobooks, and family room time. And I want to be clear: fun does not always have to become a lesson. Sometimes learning is found in the fun, and homeschool moms can record those things later if they want to. But sometimes the gift is simply being together. If you’ve been wanting more fun with your kids but you do not have the energy for a big plan, this episode will help you look for one small thing that fits your real life. “I Need a Break, But I Feel Guilty Taking One”: Why Rest Isn’t Lazy for Tired Homeschool Moms // 346

Have you ever finally had a little help, quiet, or breathing room, and instead of resting, your brain immediately started listing everything you could get done? The laundry. The dishes. The paperwork. The homeschool planning. The phone calls. The clutter. All the things that have been waiting because the needs in front of you were louder. In this episode, I’m talking about why rest can feel so hard for tired homeschool moms — especially when there is unfinished work everywhere and real people still need you. I share honestly about learning this in my own life as a homeschool mom, Navy wife, and special needs mom who is learning how to run a caregiving marathon without using every pocket of help to work harder. This is not a “take a spa day” episode. It is a gentle reminder that rest is not laziness when it helps you return to your family with more patience, steadiness, and love. If you have been feeling guilty for needing a break, I pray this episode helps you receive one small moment of rest as part of faithful stewardship. “My ADHD Kids Can’t Stay on Task”: How to Break Homeschool Into Small Wins // 344

Does homeschooling your ADHD child sometimes feel like trying to herd cats? You start the day with a plan, but one child needs to move, another child forgets what you just said, someone needs a snack, someone cannot find a pencil, and suddenly nobody seems to be doing the thing they were supposed to be doing. In this episode, I’m talking about what to do when your ADHD child cannot seem to stay on task. Instead of treating every distraction like a homeschool disaster, we’ll look at a simpler way to help your child return to learning with less shame and less pressure. This episode is for the homeschool mom who feels worn out from redirecting, reminding, repeating herself, and wondering why her child cannot “just finish the lesson.” You’ll hear a calmer way to think about short lessons, movement, and small wins — especially for children who struggle with attention, task initiation, working memory, or staying seated for long stretches of time. Your homeschool does not have to look like a quiet classroom to be faithful and fruitful. “If the Whole Homeschool Day Turns Into Attitudes”: What Still Counts as Real Learning // 343

Have you ever ended a homeschool day and thought, “Did we even do school today?” Maybe the math lesson took three times longer than it should have. Maybe the reading lesson turned into tears. Maybe chores dragged on forever, sibling conflict showed up again, and most of your energy went toward correction, attitude work, and constant redirection. In this episode, I’m talking about the homeschool days that feel wasted on paper — especially the days after co-op, appointments, errands, playdates, travel, or other high-output days. I share how I began noticing the “kickback” that often came after a full day out of the house, and why those recovery days may be revealing more than you think. If you are a Christian homeschool mom who feels discouraged when the lesson plan falls apart, this episode will help you see the hard days with more peace, more wisdom, and less panic. Because sometimes the day that looks wasted is actually the day where some of the deepest learning is happening. “My Kids Keep Fighting, and I React Too Fast”: A Calm Sibling Conflict Plan for Christian Moms // 342

Have you ever heard your kids start fighting in the other room and felt your whole body tense up before you even knew what happened? In this episode, I’m sharing a calm sibling conflict plan for Christian moms who want peace in the home but often feel pulled into the chaos too quickly. I talk about what it looks like in our own neurodivergent family, with ADHD, autism, auditory processing challenges, different sound thresholds, and my own adult-diagnosed ADHD in the mix. Sometimes the goal is not to force everyone through a fast apology. Sometimes the wiser move is to stop and separate, calm and listen, and repair later when hearts and brains are ready. If you have ever stepped into a sibling fight too hot, talked too long, corrected before you understood the whole story, or tried to rush reconciliation because you just wanted the arguing to stop, this episode will give you a simple, faith-filled way forward. This week’s reminder: sometimes we have to slow down to speed up.
