Listening to your heart isn’t just a saying. It’s a practice and here is how it works

The relationship between empirical medicine and women’s health is a complex one. Historically, the male body was considered the biological default, leading to the clinical exclusion of women. This has contributed to the negligence of women-specific health needs (even more so for certain demographics, such as the disproportionate maternal mortality rates among Black women). And whilst those with access to modern medicine are, of course, incredibly fortunate, we can also acknowledge that traditional medicine has been shaped by structural biases. So, when it comes to ‘alternative’ methods and wellbeing techniques, is it really that radical for women to seek additional care outside the clinic? Integrating her expertise in psychology and psychophysiology with the innate intuition of womanhood, Andrea Carel brings a new (or perhaps ancient) approach. Centered around the lesser-known intrinsic cardiac nervous system (the heart’s very own nervous system, or ‘little brain’), Andrea’s work began with the silent, knowing tug of intuition. During a personal health scare, she was instinctively guided to turn inward and begin ‘talking’ to her heart, an urge that led to a profound experience of wellness. For episode three of Modern Madonnas’ third season, Andrea explores the heart as both a physical organ, intricately connected to the nervous system and the body’s stress responses (such as ‘fight or flight’), and also as a site of symbolic emotional experience and memory. Can we create new pathways towards health and self-acceptance by ‘living from our hearts’? The new episode is out now on YouTube, Podcasts, Spotify, Acast (link in bio). Hosted on Acast.
