They Walk Among America - US True Crime

Nina instead’s podcast “Already Gone” was my intro into the world of true crime podcasts back in 2015, and I like her straight facts and signature voice. I love this podcast because I am hearing new cases (to me) that haven’t been rehashed a thousand times in the true crime stratosphere. I’ve tried to listen to the sister podcast UK version, but I like Nina’s style and cases better. I hope new podcasts come out, but haven’t seen anything new in my feed since 2023. Keep at it Nina!

I love the content and all of the very interesting stories. Let’s get that out of the way first. I listen to every episode and look forward to each new one. As an English major, however, the misuse of language in the show’s writing drives me crazy. The frequent grammar and syntax errors take away from the impact of the stories, as do the occasional but conspicuous malapropisms. To the producers: If you want to make this good podcast a great podcast, please enlist the services of a copy editor or professional writer. I would also suggest working with a voice coach to improve intonation, inflection, and delivery of the spoken word. Grave and often horrifying facts are delivered with a glib, even happy tone as though we were being told something uplifting or just mundane.

Dear producers, do you think you can apply a tiny bit more work in the post production phase? There are vital and informative clips of police interviews which have such poor legibility that the narrative develops gaping holes. For decades there have been pretty straightforward ways to do just a little bit of EQ for a lot of improvement. But these days it is unforgivable to not apply at least a single pass of noise reduction in this age of digital tool sets, of AI enhancement of existing audio. So what is up exactly? This is a matter of minutes and dollars not hours and thousands.

Extended quotes and background material from family and friends of the victims, mar the narrative. The podcast makes me feel lousy for my fascination with True Crime. Just give me the facts and not protracted sentiment. The UK version is infinitely superior.
