    This week we hop in our DeLorean and head back 30 years to 1996 to relive some of the great albums, songs and movements of that year! Our discussion begins with one of the biggest revolutions that happened that year -- the advent of The Spice Girls! From there we move into rock, prog, metal, country, Brit Pop, and more. We've got debuts from Kula Shaker, Arch Enemy, and Nada Surf; big albums from Sheryl Crow, Lush, Fiona Apple and Tori Amos; and albums by legacy acts like Rush, KISS, Prince, and Def Leppard.     Everyone loves a good cover! But not all covers are good! This week Rob and Alan talk about what turns them off about some covers. Is it the band doing the covering? Does it stray too far from the original? Or is the song transformed into a new genre that simply doesn't work? Or does it have more to do with our emotional attachment to the original? Along the way, we reference songs by Duran Duran, Thompson Twins, Marilyn Manson, Smashmouth, Scissor Sisters, Orgy, and more.     #177 - Burning Man Documentary

    Left to their own devices, Rob and Alan take a trip to the Nevada desert for BURNING MAN! Well, we watched the new documentary about it, anyway! The Man Will Burn is a new docuseries from HBO Films that came out in July. The film series explores the origins and development of the festival as well as the art, the music, the philosophy, and the challenges that it faced from COVID, extreme weather, and internal and external opposition.  Afterward, we talk about new music from Simple Minds and U2, seeing Brandi Carlile live, and we go on a doozy of an old man rant about how no one cares about live music anymore!

    One Album Wonders There are some really obvious examples of bands or artists that only made one studio album -- The Sex Pistols, Jeff Buckley, and Lauryn Hill immediately come to mind.     The heart of the world was broken on August 25, 2026 when the news came out that legendary singer, musician, songwriter, actor, businesswoman and philanthropist Dolly Parton passed away. Dolly was as close to a universally-loved artist as you'll ever find. We are joined in the studio this week by Emmy Award-winning Good Day Atlanta feature reporter Paul Milliken, who met and interviewed Dolly numerous times over the years, to remember the icon. We talk about how her Appalachian upbringing influenced her life and career, the impact of her music, her film career, her extraordinary efforts as a humanitarian, and more.  We'd love to hear from you!     Alan's Record Bin #6 - HEAVY METAL (The Movie)

    The animated film Heavy Metal, based on the adult sci-fi fantasy comic magazine of the same name, was released 45 years ago on August 7, 1981, and while it wasn't a big box office smash, it became a cult classic and (at the time) something of a rite of passage. The iconic soundtrack featured great songs by Black Sabbath, Blue Öyster Cult, Cheap Trick, Journey, Don Felder, Devo, Stevie Nicks, Grand Funk Railroad, and others. This was a hugely important film for me in the fall after my graduation from high school, and on this week's show, I'll play for you some of my favorite tunes from the album and tell you the stories behind them.  If you remember Heavy Metal from the glory days, or if you're watching it now for the first time, I'd love to hear from you!
