102: How to Recite the Scary Parts of the Bible

How do you recite the scary, explicit, or emotionally heavy parts of the Bible without watering them down? In Episode 102 of Reciting with Rachel, Rachel Eernisse continues her conversation with professional Scripture reciter Jeremy Kluth of Scripture Alive about how to handle difficult passages with faithfulness, wisdom, and care for the people listening. Rachel and Jeremy discuss everything from Ezekiel’s strange visions and Noah’s flood to Sodom and Gomorrah, judgment passages, and other Scriptures that can be difficult for children—or adults—to hear. The goal is not to make every passage comfortable. Sometimes the fear, shock, grief, or seriousness is part of what the passage is meant to communicate. As Rachel shares in the episode: “When we recite Scripture, we need to let the scary parts be scary.” In This Episode • How to approach frightening and emotionally heavy Scripture • Why knowing your audience matters • How to share difficult Bible stories with children • When a short explanation before a recitation can help • Why some passages should still feel scary or shocking • How pauses, pacing, eye contact, volume, and intensity affect delivery • How to distinguish caring for your audience from watering down Scripture • Why prayer and dependence on the Holy Spirit are essential • How difficult passages can help listeners understand Scripture more deeply Jeremy shares how reciting difficult passages has sometimes helped listeners understand texts that had previously felt confusing or intimidating. Rachel and Jeremy also emphasize that thoughtful delivery can serve the audience without removing the seriousness of the Word. The goal is simple: care for your audience, remain faithful to Scripture, and trust God with the results. 🔗 Scripture Memory Fellowship: https://scripturememory.com/ 🔗 Jeremy Kluth / Scripture Alive: https://scripturealive.com/ 🎧 Subscribe to the Scripture Memory Podcast so you don’t miss future episodes of Reciting with Rachel. #ScriptureMemory #BibleMemorization #ScriptureRecitation #RecitingWithRachel #BibleReading #BibleStudy #ChristianPodcast #PublicBibleReading Support the show Are you tired of making your Scripture memory journey alone? 101: Don’t Skip the Hard Parts of Scripture

Some passages of Scripture are simply harder to recite than others. They may be repetitive, difficult to remember, filled with lists and genealogies, or hard to understand. So how do you faithfully recite the “tough stuff” without losing your place—or losing your audience? In this episode of Reciting with Rachel, Rachel Eernisse welcomes back professional Scripture reciter Jeremy Kluth of Scripture Alive to talk through practical ways to approach difficult passages. Jeremy explains why challenging passages still matter, how to use mnemonic and visual memory tools, why some passages simply require more review, and how pacing, emphasis, movement, and careful preparation can help listeners follow sections that might otherwise be difficult to hear. They also wrestle with a bigger question: What do you do when you’re reciting a passage you still don’t completely understand? Jeremy’s encouragement is to study faithfully, seek understanding, and then trust God with the results. As he puts it, “God calls us to obedience, not results.” Chapters 00:00 — How to Recite the Tough Stuff 01:45 — What Makes a Passage Difficult to Recite? 05:06 — How to Memorize Repetitive or Confusing Passages 06:30 — Using Mnemonic Devices for Difficult Lists 08:55 — Rachel’s Visual Trick for Keeping Chapters Straight 11:18 — Don’t Let Your Memory Technique Take Over the Recitation 13:58 — How Do You Recite the “Boring” Parts of Scripture? 16:47 — Why Genealogies and Lists Still Matter 18:09 — Reciting Genealogies Without Losing Your Audience 23:18 — Using Speed and Emphasis to Create Focal Points 25:48 — How Pitch, Volume, and Body Language Help 29:43 — “God Calls Us to Obedience, Not Results” 30:55 — How Do You Recite What You Don’t Understand? 33:46 — The Prophets Didn’t Always Understand Everything Either 36:25 — Being Faithful Even When You Still Have Questions 38:15 — Why Reciting Hard Passages Can Bless Your Listeners 39:00 — What’s Coming in Part 2 In This Episode • Why some passages require more review than others • How to handle similar wording and repeated ideas • Mnemonic, visual, auditory, and kinesthetic memory tools • How to recite genealogies and lists effectively • When speeding up can actually help a passage • Using pauses, emphasis, pitch, and movement intentionally • What to do when you don’t fully understand the passage • Why faithfulness matters more than producing a perfect result • How difficult passages can deepen both the reciter’s and listener’s understanding Every part of Scripture is there for a purpose. Difficult passages give the reciter a special opportunity to spend time wrestling with the text—and then help someone else hear and understand it more clearly. 🔗 Scripture Memory Fellowship: https://scripturememory.com/ 🔗 Learn more about Jeremy Kluth and Scripture Alive: https://scripturealive.com/ Subscribe to the Scripture Memory Podcast for more episodes of Reciting with Rachel. 100: How to Hear More When the Bible Is Read

How well do you actually listen when Scripture is read or recited? In this episode of *Reciting with Rachel*, Rachel Eernisse talks with Randy Williamson, Director of Scripture Engagement at Scripture Memory Fellowship, about the often-overlooked skill of listening well to God’s Word. Randy explains why Scripture is not meant to be treated like ordinary information, why longer passages require intentional attention in our “snippet culture,” and how listeners can miss the blessing of a recitation when they focus more on critiquing the speaker than hearing the Word itself.  They also discuss practical ways to prepare for listening, including praying for the reciter, reading the passage ahead of time, removing distractions, using a physical Bible, choosing where you sit carefully, and learning how to build your attention span over time.  One of the key reminders from the conversation is that Scripture recitation is not primarily a performance to evaluate. **“It’s not a performance. It’s communal. It’s worship.”**  In this episode: - Why listening to Scripture takes practice - How modern “snippet culture” affects our attention - What we should actually listen for during a recitation - How to avoid becoming overly critical of the reciter - How to prepare spiritually before listening - Practical ways to reduce distractions - Why hearing Scripture can deepen your understanding of a passage - How your listening ability can improve over time - How Scripture Memory Fellowship’s Abide meetings help people practice public Scripture reading and community memory If you want to grow in Scripture memory, recitation, and listening, visit: ScriptureMemory.com ScriptureMemory.com/abide Subscribe to the Scripture Memory Podcast for more episodes of *Reciting with Rachel* and more conversations about Scripture memory, Scripture recitation, public Bible reading, and engaging deeply with the Word of God. #ScriptureMemory #BibleReading #ScriptureRecitation #BibleMemorization #ChristianPodcast #PublicBibleReading #BibleStudy #RecitingWithRachel Support the show Are you tired of making your Scripture memory journey alone? Is Scripture memorization still worth the effort in the age of AI? (Bonus Episode)

Is Scripture memorization still worth the effort in the age of AI? Today, we can ask an AI assistant for a Bible verse on virtually any topic and get an answer in seconds. So does that make memorizing Scripture less important—or could it actually make Scripture memory more important than ever? In this episode of the Scripture Memory Podcast, we explore what changes when AI can instantly retrieve biblical information, why a persuasive answer isn’t necessarily the same thing as truth, and how memorizing God’s Word can give Christians a firm foundation in an age filled with competing voices and opinions. The goal of Scripture memory isn’t simply to retrieve the right verse faster than your phone can. It is to know the truth, build your life upon it, and allow God’s Word to shape the way you think, believe, and live. 📖 RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE Scripture Memory Fellowship https://scripturememory.com/ Songs of the Soul, Vol. 2 Memorize a key verse from each of Psalms 76–150: https://scripturememory.com/sos2 14:6 – The Truth An 84-verse Scripture memory course addressing some of life’s biggest questions, including truth, suffering, the meaning of life, and what happens after death: https://scripturememory.com/products-resources/other-products/14-6 Claude by Anthropic The AI assistant demonstrated in this episode: https://www.anthropic.com/ 📖 SCRIPTURES DISCUSSED OR QUOTED Philippians 4:6–7 Isaiah 41:10 Proverbs 3:5–6 Psalm 34:8 Romans 8:28 Ephesians 4:4–14 John 17:17 Genesis 1:1 James 1:17 Romans 5:8 1 Corinthians 15:20 Psalm 46:1 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 If this episode encourages you, subscribe to the Scripture Memory Fellowship channel, share it with someone who wants to grow in God’s Word, and begin memorizing a passage this week. 098: You Need Scripture for Prayer

How can Scripture shape the way we pray—especially when we don’t have the words? In this episode of the Scripture Memory Podcast, Luke Hutterer explores **Psalm 5:3** and David’s model for morning prayer. We see a pattern of approaching God with **intentionality, expectation, and confidence**, trusting that He hears us and faithfully responds. Luke also shares a story from his first mission trip to Alaska, when anxiety about sharing his faith led him to Joshua 1:9 and the reminder to be strong and courageous. That experience became a powerful lesson: when Scripture is already stored in our hearts, God’s Word can come to mind in moments of fear, uncertainty, gratitude, praise, and despair. The Psalms are especially valuable because they give us language for nearly every season of life. When your heart feels full—or when you feel like you have nothing to say—Scripture can help shape your prayers and turn your attention back toward God. In this episode: • Why morning prayer can set the direction for your entire day • What Psalm 5:3 teaches about intentional prayer • Why we can pray with expectation and confidence • How Scripture memory helps when you don’t know what to pray • Luke’s story from his first mission trip • Why the Psalms are such a powerful place to begin memorizing Scripture 📖 **Songs of the Soul** https://scripturememory.com/sos 🌱 **Scripture Memory Fellowship** https://scripturememory.com 🧠 **VerseLocker — Scripture Memory App** https://verselocker.com 🎙️ **Scripture Memory Podcast** https://scripturememorypodcast.com Pray each day. 097: Why Scripture Recitation Matters: More Than Memorizing Words | Reciting with Rachel

Reciting with Rachel — Episode 2: Why Scripture Recitation Matters: More Than Memorizing Words What's the real difference between reading Scripture aloud and reciting it from memory? Simon Camilleri (Public Bible Reading) returns to answer that—and to share why the goal was never just memorization, but internalization. In Part 2 of this conversation, host Rachel Eernisse (Scripture Speakers) and Simon explore how Scripture recitation fits within the broader ministry of public Bible reading. Simon explains why Scripture was not only written to be preserved, but also to be spoken and heard—comparing the Bible to sheet music that is written so it can be played. Rachel and Simon discuss the difference between simply memorizing words and truly internalizing Scripture, why effective Bible reading and recitation both require preparation, and how God's Word can move from the page, into the mind and heart, out through the voice, and into the hearts of listeners. They also talk practical steps for churches, families, and small groups to build a culture around hearing God's Word spoken aloud. Simon shares ways churches can value and strengthen the ministry of public Bible reading, while Rachel discusses reading Scripture together as a family, ABIDE groups, and ScriptureFests. Later in the episode, Simon reflects on his theater background and experience presenting memorized Scripture dramatically. He explains the freedom that comes from internalizing a passage deeply enough to look people in the eye, use movement, and communicate Scripture naturally—and why passages committed to memory can continue shaping us long after we can no longer recite them word-for-word. The episode closes with a Scripture recitation from Rachel. 096: The Forgotten Practice That Shaped the Bible As We Know It

Reciting with Rachel — Episode 1 Biblical History of Scripture Recitation, with Simon Camilleri In the debut episode of the Reciting with Rachel series, host Rachel Eernisse (Scripture Speakers) welcomes Simon Camilleri (Public Bible Reading) all the way from Australia to trace the biblical history of public Scripture reading — from Moses reading the covenant at Sinai, through King Josiah's rediscovery of the Law, to Ezra's reading in Nehemiah 8, Jesus in the synagogue, and Paul's charge to Timothy to devote himself to the public reading of Scripture. A rich, sweeping look at why reading (and reciting) God's Word aloud has always mattered to His people.
