As a moderate and a longtime Independent, I respect and appreciate the premise of this show so much. I was hoping to hear some thoughtful debate on the issues dividing “our United States,” to come away feeling some hope for reconnection over shared American values, and to maybe even get some ideas for navigating the chasm between my own right and left leaning family members. Unfortunately, the parents mentally struggle to process information or to actually answer a question. They get stuck in illogical thought loops, are easily distracted by unrelated clips, and sometimes just start barking out random insults. Anything they don’t like is twisted into, “you don’t love America,” illustrating their belief that the only way to love America is in whatever way they do, which is absolutely stifling and absolutely UN-American. I do find myself wondering if there is some age-related cognitive decline. The REAL necessary conversation might actually be, “is it time to take the car keys away” - ie, as Americans, do we need to take a hard look at if an aging voting population should be trusted with the keys to our democracy? Should there be a cognitive test for voting? Regardless, the things they say to their children week after week are so cruel and heartless and at times disgusting, it’s become downright cringe to hear them end each episode claiming to LOVE them. When it comes to “love” and “Communism,” Bob and Mary Lou don’t seem to understand either. PS - Biden was not in office at any point in 2020.
