Straw Cup vs. Open Cup: Which Comes First? with Dawn Winkelmann, MS, CCC-SLP

#101: Which comes first for babies who are weaning: straw cup or open cup? Both are important when weaning off the breast or bottle and in this episode I’m joined by pediatric swallowing expert Dawn Winkelmann, MS, CCC-SLP who is going to talk about the importance of each, in their due time. Dawn is the designer of the new ezpz Mini Cup + Straw Training System. She is the creator of the 3-Phase Developmental Drinking System that helps transition babies through their developmentally appropriate phases of learning how to drink. In this episode she’s breaking down everything you need to know about teaching your baby how to drink from a straw cup and what comes before and after that skill. Listen to this episode to learn: 1. Speech and feeding milestones that are related to open cup and straw cup drinking and how they develop...and in what order 2. Why the straw Dawn developed for ezpz has a beginner straw side and an advanced drinking side to promote independent drinking...but also how each serves as a safety mechanism 3. 2. The History of Baby-Led Weaning with its Founding Philosopher Gill Rapley, PhD (Part 1)

    5D AGO

The History of Baby-Led Weaning with its Founding Philosopher Gill Rapley, PhD (Part 1)

#100: Gill Rapley will be the first to tell you she didn’t “invent” baby-led weaning. But if you’ve read Rapley’s original baby-led weaning book, you’ll agree that she did a lot more than, as she so modestly claims, “...just gave it a name and a theoretical base”. As the founder of the baby-led weaning philosophy, GIll Rapley opened our eyes to the reality that when it comes to feeding: babies can do so much more than we give them credit for.  To celebrate the 100th episode of the BABY-LED WEANING MADE EASY podcast, I’m thrilled to bring you a two-part interview series with the lady who started it all: Gill Rapley, PhD.  In this first episode we’ll be looking at the history of baby-led weaning: did she set out to spawn a baby-feeding movement? How did Rapley come to co-author Baby-Led Weaning: The Essential Guide book with Tracey Murkett? And then how did she deal with doubters and skeptics when the baby-led weaning philosophy and practice really began to take off?  Listen to this episode to learn: 1.  How Gill came to realize that during her time as a practicing Health Visitor in the UK, when she saw babies refusing food she realized it wasn’t the FOOD they were refusing but the way that they were BEING FED 2. When Gill Rapley started promoting baby-led weaning and sharing her message with parents how it was met with skepticism by many in the infant feeding and child development worlds. She also shares how the perception of baby-led weaning has changed with the advent of the internet & social media in the 23 years since the original publication of her BLW book 3. Why she collaborated with Tracey Murkett and how they came to write the original baby-led weaning book together despite the fact that they had never met in person prior to commencing the project. This interview is part of a 2-part series with Gill Rapley, PhD. In this episode (100) we cover the history of baby-led weaning with its founding philosopher. In the next interview with Gill (102) we will talk about her ideas for the future of BLW and where she sees the movement going and what she would like to see more of (and less of) when it comes to promoting self-feeding from baby’s first bites. 3. Are Organic Foods Better for My Baby?

    MAR 9

Are Organic Foods Better for My Baby?

#99: Does my baby need to eat organic foods? Are organic foods “healthier” than their conventionally grown counterparts? If you can only afford or get access to certain types of organic foods, which ones should you offer to your baby? In this episode we’re looking at organic foods to determine if they are inherently better choices for babies than are non-organic foods. We’re analyzing the nutrition, taste, environmental impact and economic considerations of selecting or not selecting organic foods when starting solids with your baby. Listen to this episode to learn: 1.  Decide whether paying extra for organic foods actually changes your baby’s nutrition 2. Understand what “organic” really means on labels (and what it doesn’t). 3. Shop with confidence on any budget—so your baby gets lots of fruits, vegetables, and real foods without the guilt. #98: Picky eating can feel like it comes out of nowhere…one day your baby eats everything and then the next day - boom - you have a picky eater on your hands. But did we maybe make picky eating up? In this episode, I’m talking with food historian Helen Zoe Veit, author of Picky: How American Children Became the Fussiest Eaters in History. 5. Mushrooms: How to Offer Mushrooms Safely to Babies

    MAR 2

Mushrooms: How to Offer Mushrooms Safely to Babies

#97 Babies can eat so many more foods than we give them credit for...like mushrooms! Mushrooms are one of those foods that adults love to hate, but babies...babies will eat anything, including mushrooms! In this episode we’ll take a look at how to feed mushrooms safely to your baby for baby-led weaning.  Mushrooms are a surprising source of nutrition, not to mention a unique taste and texture experience for your baby. In this episode I’m sharing a number of ways to prepare mushrooms and mushroom recipes that work well for baby-led weaning. Listen to this episode to learn: 1. Portobello strips  - you can grill a portobello, I like to lather it in olive oil and then add balsamic vinegar, get it nice & soft and cut into strips and make sure it passes the squish test before offering to your baby. 2. The blend trend - finely chopped mushrooms combine half and half with your favorite ground meat like beef or bison or turkey or chicken. You can put this in burgers or tacos or anywhere else you would use ground meat, but filled halfway with mushrooms. 3. Sautee - particularly like enoki, beech and maitake & royal trumpet mushrooms - these are longer sizes babies can pick up. They have a handle for a stem and go great in some butter or olive oil. 4. Risotto - mushrooms go great in risotto, you can make it with any short grain rice such as sushi rice (calrose rice) or the traditional way, with arborio. Also any gratin with a whole grain you can always add mushrooms too as well. 5. Omelettes - egg cups or omelettes with mushrooms work great for BLW. Eggs are a potentially allergenic food so you want to make sure the baby has had eggs a number of times without reaction before trying this.
