    The shadow of Goliath is looming over St. James Parish, Louisiana, and it’s called The Sunshine Project. This $9.4 billion proposed petrochemical plant would sprawl across 2,400 acres, pushing up against the community that has lived and died there for generations.     Environmental Activism in Louisiana with Jane Patton

    One of the people our production team met in Louisiana was Jane Patton. Her family has been in New Orleans for five generations, and her love for the city runs deep. Jane is the campaign manager for plastics and petrochemicals at the Center for International and Environmental Law. You heard from her in episode one. Discarded host Gloria Riviera caught up with Jane over Cafe du Monde beignets in New Orleans. Jane is the lead author on a report, published in 2021, which documented health, safety and labor violations by Formosa Plastics – the company trying to build The Sunshine Project in St. James Parish.     Environmental Racism in the Ironbound with JV Valladolid

    Environmental racism refers to the disproportionate exposure to environmental hazards that Black, Indigenous, and other people of color often face. In Newark, New Jersey’s Ironbound neighborhood, this is a daily reality for many. The Ironbound is a multi-ethnic, working class neighborhood dominated by heavy-polluting facilities. It’s home to the state’s largest garbage incinerator, along with lots of chemical refineries. In Episode 3, you heard from JV Valladolid, an environmental justice organizer with the Ironbound Community Corporation.
