182: From Home Bakers to Business Makers with Grayson Hogard

Maurice sits down with Grayson Hogard, co-founder of Grove Cookie Company with his wife, Marie. Grayson spent 14 years working in logistics at Bonneville Power Administration, part of the U.S. Department of Energy, while Marie had a corporate career of her own. During the pandemic, a simple baking hobby turned into selling cookies from their townhouse, then corporate gifting, a production facility, employees, and eventually a high six-figure business that allowed Grayson to leave his government career. Their journey is a real-life example of several Try Life On principles: employment is a resource to build life, go from “If Only” to “What If,” find the “Who” instead of studying the “What” forever, and just do and course correct along the way. They didn’t have every detail figured out before they started. They used what they knew, asked for help with what they didn’t, followed opportunities as they appeared, and kept moving. For anyone sitting in a traditional job wondering how life could feel different, this conversation offers a practical example. You don’t need to build a $20 million company or chase someone else’s definition of success. You can start from exactly where you are, experiment alongside the life you already have, and gradually create more income, time, confidence, relationships and freedom. Listen to Grayson and Marie’s story through that lens, and ask yourself: What could I start trying on from exactly where I am today? Connect with Grayson! 181: What Is All This Space For?

What if the space you’re creating in your life isn’t meant to be filled but is preparing you for something you can’t see yet? In this episode, Maurice Philogene reflects on his years-long journey of “deleveraging”: stepping away from careers, investments, businesses, obligations, and identities that had once defined his life. What began as an instinct to slow down and move from doing to being ultimately created something far more valuable than an empty calendar: the capacity to be present when life suddenly called on him. Maurice shares how that space unexpectedly became essential when his parents’ health and circumstances changed, bringing them from Florida to live near him in Maryland. He explores the difference between having freedom and having the capacity to respond to what needs you, while reflecting on identity, intuition, relationships, family, and trusting a new season before you understand where it is leading. In this episode, Maurice explores: Why completion doesn’t mean failureThe difference between an empty calendar and an unencumbered lifeLearning to release identities that have served their purposeHow “deleveraging” can create space for family, relationships, and purposeWhy you don’t need to know what comes next before letting goThe power of listening to your internal voice instead of constantly following the status quoHow freedom can create greater capacity to be present for others Connect with Maurice Try Life On Newsletter: https://www.trylifeon.com/blog?tag=newsletter Email: maurice@trylifeon.com Website: https://www.trylifeon.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mauricephilogene

180: Pivoting From Institutional Playbooks That Don’t Work.

On this episode of the Life On Podcast, Maurice Philogene sits down with Barry “Chip” Daniels, a retired U.S. Army Colonel who spent 28 years in the military and experienced firsthand what happens when leaders have the courage to challenge the status quo. Chip shares the extraordinary story of the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment during its 2007 deployment to Iraq, where conditions on the ground forced leaders to question the strategy they had been trained to follow. After suffering devastating losses, the unit made the decision to build an unlikely partnership with local Iraqi fighters who had previously been fighting against American forces. That decision carried enormous risk. But it also helped transform the community, restore trust, push back against Al-Qaeda, and ultimately change what was happening on the ground. The lessons extend far beyond the battlefield. Chip and Maurice explore institutional thinking, leadership, trusting your judgment, recognizing when the status quo isn't working, and having the courage to step outside the accepted playbook. Chip also opens up about the challenges of transitioning out of a 28-year military career, recognizing the “blinders” that shape our decisions, and learning to ask what we actually want from our lives. Sometimes the right answer isn't to follow the playbook. Sometimes it's to recognize that the playbook no longer fits. About Resilience Warriors Rise The story of Chip and the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment is also being documented in Resilience Warriors Rise, a documentary project produced with Nicole Amelio Kasper and the team at Amelio Media. What began as an effort to capture the battalion’s experience has grown into a larger docuseries exploring the devastating losses they endured, the decisions that changed the course of their mission, the unlikely partnership formed between American soldiers and local Iraqi fighters, and what happened after those soldiers returned home. The project also looks beyond the battlefield at the lasting impact of war. For Chip and the team behind Resilience Warriors Rise, telling these stories is about helping veterans reconnect, talk openly about experiences they may have carried privately for years, and helping soldiers and their families better understand the significance of what they were part of.
