    #248 DUTCH - Bastiaan Woudt: fotograaf, ondernemer en eeuwige beginner

    Wat gebeurt er wanneer nieuwsgierigheid het kompas wordt van een kunstenaarspraktijk? In deze aflevering ga ik in gesprek met de Nederlandse fotograaf Bastiaan Woudt. Een maker die zijn eerste camera kocht na de geboorte van zijn zoon, en sindsdien een heel eigen universum heeft opgebouwd rond fotografie, kunst en ondernemerschap. We spreken elkaar in zijn studio in Alkmaar. Een plek waar zijn kenmerkende zwart-witportretten ontstaan, maar waar ook nieuwe experimenten vorm krijgen. In ons gesprek hebben we het over: • hoe een autodidact fotograaf internationaal doorbreekt• waarom nieuwsgierigheid misschien wel de belangrijkste eigenschap van een kunstenaar is• hoe technologie en AI een nieuwe laag kunnen toevoegen aan een fotografische praktijk• waarom ondernemerschap en kunstenaarschap volgens hem onlosmakelijk verbonden zijn• en hoe hij een maand lang de 88 tempels van de Shikoku-pelgrimsroute in Japan fotografeerde voor zijn nieuwe project Henro Wat mij vooral opviel: Bastiaan beweegt voortdurend tussen disciplines.     #247 ENGLISH - Are you photographing to win. Or just trying not to lose?

    We like to think we make rational decisions in our work. About clients, money, about which projects to accept or refuse. But when I look at the conversations I have with photographers every week, I see something else. Many of those decisions are not rational at all. They are driven by something underneath. And that somethinh is scarcity or trust. In this episode I talk about a pattern I see all the time in photography businesses: staying too long with the wrong clients, spending huge amounts of time on small savings, or saying yes to work that slowly drains your energy. On the surface it looks practical but underneath, it’s often fear. I also share a more personal story about where my own scarcity mindset came from, and why those patterns can stay with you much longer than you expect. Because in the end, one question matters more than most photographers realize: Are you playing to win. Or are you simply trying not to lose?     #246 ENGLISH - Delphine Diallo on the female gaze, power, and portraiture

    What happens when you stop “capturing” a portrait and start treating it as an exchange? In this episode I sit down with Delphine Diallo, Brooklyn-based artist and photographer (French and Senegalese roots), known for a visual language that turns the women around her into something unapologetically powerful, sometimes even divine. We recorded this conversation in my tiny hotel room in New York, which feels fitting, because New York is where Delphine found something she didn’t find in Europe: space to become, to shift, to lead, without being reduced to how she looks or where she comes from. We talk about the history of photography and the male gaze, about why “capturing” is a loaded word, and why Delphine sees the face as “the architecture of the soul”. We also go into her relationship with discipline (kung fu), intuition, the elements, and how her practice has expanded beyond photography into AI, where she works in collaboration with a self-named entity, Emma, as part of building a new kind of story world. This is one of those conversations that moves between art, identity, power, and the question underneath it all: what does it take to stay sovereign in your own vision?     #245 DUTCH Het verhaal dat jij over jezelf gelooft, bepaalt je omzet als fotograaf.

    De eerste podcast van het jaar buiten opgenomen in België. Zon op mijn gezicht, vogels op de achtergrond, en tegelijk een heel heldere boodschap :-) We praten vaak over strategie, prijzen en positionering.     #244 DUTCH - De reden waarom jij niet groeit als fotograaf (en het niets met talent te maken heeft)

    Wat als jouw grootste blokkade niet je techniek is, niet de markt, en zelfs niet je talent, maar de manier waarop jij komt opdagen in je eigen leven en onderneming? In deze aflevering neem ik je mee in een periode waarin mijn energie laag was en ik noodgedwongen moest vertragen. Dat stilvallen bracht helderheid. Over prioriteiten, over leiderschap en over de patronen die ik keer op keer zie bij fotografen die willen groeien, maar zichzelf onderweg saboteren. Ik vertel over een fotograaf die na een intens gesprek simpelweg verdween. Over iemand die betaalde sessies liet liggen en later een negatieve review schreef. En over wat dat eigenlijk blootlegt. Want hoe je één ding doet, doe je bijna alles. Hoe je communiceert, hoe je grenzen stelt, hoe je keuzes maakt of uitstelt, hoe je jezelf prioriteit geeft, het sijpelt allemaal door in je fotografie en in je bedrijf. Veel fotografen denken dat ze een strategieprobleem hebben, terwijl ze in werkelijkheid vastzitten in belemmerende overtuigingen, people pleasing, twijfel of uitstelgedrag. Succes in fotografie gaat niet alleen over betere beelden maken. Het gaat over verantwoordelijkheid nemen, duidelijke keuzes durven maken, consistent komen opdagen en stoppen met jezelf klein te houden.     #243 DUTCH - Wat maakt een portret dat blijft hangen, een gesprek met Koos Breukel

    In deze aflevering ben ik te gast bij Koos Breukel, één van de bekendste portretfotografen van Nederland. We zitten in zijn studio, tussen achtergronddoeken, prints aan de muur en een werkproces dat tegelijk razendsnel en tergend traag is. Koos vertelt hoe hij werkt, waarom hij flitst, waarom hij graag ruimte laat voor terloopsheid, en hoe een beeld pas later kan tonen of het “blijft hangen”. We praten over zijn liefde voor schilderkunst en ambacht, over analoog werken als iets persoonlijks, en over archiveren als een manier om je eigen leven opnieuw te lezen. Ook over het mysterie van mensen, waarom hij liever nieuwsgierig blijft dan alles te willen weten, en hoe de echte keuze vaak pas weken, maanden of zelfs jaren later gemaakt wordt.     #242 ENGLISH - A lesson about space I needed myself

    I drove to Alkmaar, to a place where you wouldn’t necessarily expect anything special. Just an industrial area, but what stayed with me wasn’t the location, but the conversation, about creativity and getting stuck.And about something we often misunderstand. We sometimes believe that once you’ve “made it,” ideas just keep flowing. That success guarantees inspiration. It doesn’t. Even photographers who work internationally, publish books, and have full calendars get stuck. The difference is that they don’t see it as failure, but as a signal. In this episode, I talk about why creativity isn’t a talent you either have or don’t have, but a muscle you train. Why making space matters more than working harder. And why two hours without a clear goal can be more valuable than a fully productive day. I also share something personal, about slowing down and being forced to pause. And how, in that pause, an idea surfaced that I had been trying to push for months.
