Why You're Bloated After 40 — And What No One Tells You About Your Gut & Liver | S4E5

You're bloated after almost every meal. Your digestion is unpredictable. And your feed won't stop pushing liver cleanses, celery juice, and microbiome pills you've probably already bought. This week I sit down with Dr. Supriya Joshi, a gastroenterologist, hepatologist, and metabolic health specialist, to cut through the noise and tell us what's actually happening inside our bodies during perimenopause and what's worth our money (spoiler: almost none of the supplements). We get into the stuff nobody explains properly: – Why bloating ramps up in your 40s and 50s (it's hormonal, and it's real). – What your microbiome actually is — and why probiotic pills don't colonize you. – The liver "detox" industry, and why your liver doesn't get sluggish or plugged. – Why one glass of wine wrecks you at 55 the way it never did at 35. – Fatty liver (now called metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease, or MASLD): tied with alcohol as a leading cause of liver transplant in North America — and how it shows up in women who barely drink. – The supplements that can actually harm you (ashwagandha, high-dose curcumin, apple cider vinegar shots). – GLP-1 medications like Wegovy and the new liver indication. – The simple liver test (called FIB-4) you may need to ask for. – Plus a rapid-fire round on celery juice, seed cycling, coffee, and intermittent fasting. It comes back to the same handful of things every time: sleep, movement, muscle, and what you actually put in your body. Boring? Maybe. But it's the truth, and it works. 🎧 New episodes of This Time of the Month drop regularly. Subscribe so you never miss one. Struggling with weight gain in perimenopause or menopause? Your jeans don't fit, and you're doing "everything right"? Dr. Doriana Parkin, M.D., reveals why the scale isn't telling the whole story. In this episode, we dive deep into: Why BMI is misleading (especially if you lift weights) The real reason your metabolism ISN'T slowing down How to track food without obsession Protein targets for women over 40 Fat redistribution in menopause (and what you can do about it) Why your jeans might be tighter even when you're healthier Dr. Parkin is a working mom of three who struggled with weight and body image as a teen. Now she helps women navigate weight loss in a sustainable, non-restrictive way that doesn't sacrifice mental health. Key Takeaways: • You can carry extra weight and still be metabolically healthy • Muscle gain can make you "heavier" but healthier • Calorie deficit still works in menopause • Protein goal: 0.7-1g per pound of your ideal body weight • NEAT (non-exercise thermogenesis) activity burns more calories than gym workouts Note: Content in this episode is meant for educational and awareness purposes. Have you ever loved your job but realized it was draining you instead of fueling you? You’re not alone. In this episode, career transition coach and founder of Foot in the Door Consulting, Ibiyemi Balogoun, joins me to explore what happens when passion meets burnout.
