How I Use Melanie Klein (Without Being a Kleinian)

Some love her, for others she tastes like soap. Is Melanie Klein the coriander of psychoanalysis? I’m not a Kleinian but I still use her best ideas in my work all the time. In this video I want to share: What I leave behind on the buffet (her deep interpretations and her child analysis) and what I take from Klein (the two positions as modes of experience, and her focus on the impact of aggression).🎓 MELANIE KLEIN COURSEMy Melanie Klein Course takes you from the life and death instinct, unconscious phantasy all the way to the paranoid-schizoid and depressive position, projective identification, and envy → https://psychodynamicpsychology.com/melanie-klein-course💌 Psychodynamic Newsletter → https://psychodynamicpsychology.myflodesk.com/newsletter🟡 Instagram → https://instagram.com/psychodynamicpsychologyTIMESTAMPS00:00 Klein for non-Kleinians1:40 What I leave: deep interpretations5:52 What I leave: Klein’s child analysis8:10 What I take: The paranoid-schizoid and depressive position11:16 What I take: The impact of internal factors (aggression)DISCLAIMER: The content provided is for educational, informational, and entertainment purposes only. Addiction to Near-Death - Masochism in "Kleinian" by Betty Joseph

We bring back Betty Joseph to deliver again: Addiction to Near-Death. Another paper that makes understanding Kleinian theory worth it (in my opinion). Joseph describes and explains a specific form a masochism through a Kleinian lense. 👀 WAITLIST for Melanie Klein Course → https://psychodynamicpsychology.myflodesk.com/melanie-klein-waitlist 🟡 Instagram → https://instagram.com/psychodynamicpsychology TIMESTAMPS 00:00 What is an addiction to near-death? 01:44 “Chuntering” - So-called thinking 03:12 Transference - How it comes alive in the session 05:13 Internal object relations - Where it comes from 07:10 What makes it so challenging 09:50 Joseph’s thoughts on treatment DISCLAIMER: The content provided is for educational, informational, and entertainment purposes only. Object Relations in Clinical Practice - Betty Joseph

Object relations theory... sure. But what about object relations in PRACTICE? Enter Betty Joseph and a 17-page paper (digestible psychodynamic literature for once). In proper Kleinian fashion, she lays out how projection (and projective identification) in the transference can help understand how object relations come alive in the session. 👀 WAITLIST for Melanie Klein Course → https://psychodynamicpsychology.myflodesk.com/melanie-klein-waitlist 🟡 Instagram → https://instagram.com/psychodynamicpsychology TIMESTAMPS 0:00 Introduction 1:15 What comes alive? 5:56 Theoretical background 11:01 Projective identification as the basis for transference 13:37 Personal thoughts 16:03 Where to go next EQUIPMENT(affiliate links) Camera: https://amzn.to/40o7jah Lens: https://amzn.to/420Igvb Microphone: https://amzn.to/4fQQ0TN DISCLAIMER: The content provided is for educational, informational, and entertainment purposes only. 5 Books That Influenced How I Think About Psychodynamic Theory and Practice in 2025

There were 5 books that had the biggest impact on my growth as a clinician in 2025. Some helped me improve my psychodynamic thinking. Others helped me gain an even deeper appreciation of the field (not that I needed that but a little extra never hurts). All of them made me excited about what there still is to learn. 💌 Psychodynamic Newsletter → https://psychodynamicpsychology.com/newsletter 📖 Books mentioned (Amazon affiliate links) Book #1 → https://amzn.to/4hYD00h Book #2 → https://amzn.to/43m3bIH Book #3 → https://amzn.to/3QmtYxD Book #4 → https://amzn.to/45WFYNL Book #5 → https://amzn.to/3A79i84 EQUIPMENT (affiliate links) Camera: https://amzn.to/40o7jah Lens: https://amzn.to/420Igvb Microphone: https://amzn.to/4fQQ0TN DISCLAIMER: The content provided is for educational, informational, and entertainment purposes only. Anna Freud: Identification with the Aggressor

This is an introduction to Anna Freud's concept of the Identification with the Aggressor (from her book The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defence). For more book recommendations and deep-dives into psychodynamic theory join my newsletter 💌 → https://psychodynamicpsychology.com/newsletterCORRECTION at 08:25: the term Anna Freud uses is not "acting out (=Ausagieren) aggression" but "abreaction (=Abreagieren) in the transference" in psychotherapy!
