Grindhouse Horror History: How the MPAA Changed Horror Forever.

They did not just rate the movies — they changed them forever! This week on the Grindhouse Syndicate we are doing something a little different. Tune in as we sit down for a special Grindhouse Horror History lesson where we deep dive into one of the most controversial and influential forces in Hollywood history — the MPAA rating system and its complicated and often brutal relationship with horror. We trace the story all the way back to the beginning with the Hayes Code and the iron grip it had on Hollywood filmmaking from the very start. We dig into the infamous X rating, how it became synonymous with the adult film industry, and what that association meant for serious filmmakers trying to push the boundaries of the genre. We also get into the addition of the PG-13 rating and how it reshaped the Hollywood landscape. But the heart of this episode is the damage — the countless horror films that were gutted by MPAA demands, forced to leave some of their most incredible practical effects work on the cutting room floor. Friday the 13th, Halloween 4, Event Horizon, Scream — the list goes on and on. these stories will make your blood boil if you are a true horror fan. And finally we talk about how filmmakers are starting to fight back, opting to release their films completely unrated and how the runaway success of Terrifier and Terrifier 2 may have changed the game for good. So join us this week because the Grindhouse Syndicate is pulling back the curtain on the system that has been cutting our horror films for decades! Graduation Day (1981)

Class is in session — and nobody is making it to graduation! This week on the Grindhouse Syndicate we are heading back to 1981 for a slice of pure early slasher era cheese that hits every mark you want it to. Herb Freed's Graduation Day is exactly the kind of film that reminds you why the early 1980s were such a golden era for the genre — low budget, gloriously cheesy, and an absolute blast from start to finish. We dig into what makes this film work so perfectly as a product of its time despite all of its rough edges, and the bizarre creative decision to set a high school slasher almost entirely in the woods instead of, you know, the high school. We also get into the hilariously negligent faculty who seem remarkably unbothered by their students dropping like flies, the strange and uncomfortable family dynamic between Anne, her mother, and her hateful stepfather, and a killer reveal that genuinely delivers when it counts. Graduation Day is not trying to reinvent the wheel and that is exactly what makes it so much fun. So sharpen your stopwatch and join us this week because the Grindhouse Syndicate is hitting the track! The Dark and the Wicked (2020)

Some evils cannot be explained. Some evils cannot be stopped. This week on the Grindhouse Syndicate we are diving into one of the most relentlessly bleak and beautifully crafted horror films of the last several years. Bryan Bertino's 2020 masterpiece The Dark and the Wicked is the kind of film that settles into your bones and refuses to leave — and this week we dig into exactly why. We talk about the stunning cinematography that turns a simple rural Texas farm into one of the most oppressive and suffocating settings in recent horror memory, and the atmosphere of pure dread that Bertino builds from the very first frame and never once lets up. We dig into the incredible performances from the two leads and how their work grounds the supernatural horror in something painfully human and real. We also get into that ending — grim, uncompromising, and absolutely devastating in the best possible way. But most of all we talk about what makes The Dark and the Wicked so special as a piece of horror filmmaking — Bertino's unflinching commitment to the idea that sometimes evil has no explanation and no weakness to exploit. No rules. No loopholes. No salvation. So join us this week as the Grindhouse Syndicate stares into the darkness — and the darkness stares right back! Bring Her Back (2025)

Some films do not just disturb you — they break you. This week on the Grindhouse Syndicate we are covering one of the most talked about horror films of 2025. The Philippou Brothers are back with Bring Her Back and if you thought Talk to Me was emotionally devastating wait until you see what they have cooked up this time. We dig into the heartbreaking and gut wrenching story at the center of this film and why it hits as hard as it does, and the absolutely stunning performance from Sally Hawkins as the deeply unhinged Laura — a portrayal so committed and so unsettling it is impossible to look away from. We also get into the remarkable story behind the making of the film and how the Philippou Brothers allowed real life grief and tragedy to shape the story during production, giving the whole thing an emotional authenticity that is genuinely rare in modern horror. We compare this to Talk to Me, break down the connections between the two films, and dig into just how cool it is that these two movies share the same universe. The Philippou Brothers are building something special. So join us this week as the Grindhouse Syndicate tackles the film everyone in the horror community is talking about! A Nightmare on Elm Street: Freddy's Nightmares (1988)

Welcome to Springwood! This week on the Grindhouse Syndicate we are stepping away from the silver screen and diving into one of the most forgotten corners of the Nightmare on Elm Street universe. Freddy's Nightmares — the 1988 anthology television series hosted by everyone's favorite dream demon — is a show that most horror fans either barely remember or never knew existed in the first place. And this week we are digging into why. We talk about how and why the show was created, what ultimately led to it being cancelled after just two seasons, and why it never quite managed to burn itself into the pop culture consciousness the way Freddy Krueger himself did. We also take a deep dive into the very first episode — a genuinely fascinating look at the events leading up to the original 1984 A Nightmare on Elm Street that gives fans a whole new perspective on how Freddy came to haunt our dreams. If you thought you knew everything about the Elm Street universe think again. So join us this week as the Grindhouse Syndicate explores the forgotten nightmare! SLUGS, The Movie (1988)

They're slimy, they’re hungry, they’re mutant SLUGS! This week on the Grindhouse Syndicate we are getting down and dirty with one of the most gloriously ridiculous creature features the 1980s ever produced. Juan Piquer Simón's 1988 cult classic Slugs is exactly the kind of movie this show was made for — and we had an absolute blast covering it. We dig into the hilariously bad dubbing that has to be heard to be believed, the unhinged decision to use hundreds of real live slugs on set, and practical effects that genuinely impress even when everything else around them is falling apart. We also talk about the uneven story, some acting choices that left us speechless, and two of the most unforgettable moments in late 80s horror — a face full of worms that has to be seen to be believed and a hero who decided the best way to save the day was to just blow up the entire town. Is Slugs a good movie? Absolutely not. Is it one of the most fun watches we have had on this show? Without question. So grab some salt and join us this week because the Grindhouse Syndicate is going full slime mode! Lake Mungo (2008)

Some horror films scare you. This one haunts you. This week on the Grindhouse Syndicate we are heading down under for a film that left us genuinely shaken in ways that are hard to even put into words. Joel Anderson's 2008 Australian masterpiece Lake Mungo is one of the most beautifully crafted and emotionally devastating horror films we have ever covered on this show — and we had a lot to say about it. We dig into Anderson's incredible screenplay and why the story hits so much harder than your typical ghost story, how the documentary style feels so perfectly chosen for this particular narrative that you forget you are watching a film, and the remarkable cast who improvised their performances giving the whole thing an authenticity that is almost uncomfortable to watch. But most of all we talk about how genuinely sad this film is. Lake Mungo is a horror film that sneaks up on you emotionally and hits you somewhere deep that you did not expect. We were affected by this one in ways we are still processing. So join us this week as the Grindhouse Syndicate takes on the film that broke us a little bit — and we mean that as the highest possible compliment!
