    109. Joann Matouk Romain Part 2 of 2

On this week's episode of Speculating Wildly About Crime, Jamie and Kristy conclude their two-part investigation into the mysterious death of Joann Romain Matouk. In this episode, they will discuss the discovery of her body 70 days after she disappeared from outside St. Paul Catholic Church in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan. They also explore the troubling questions surrounding the official ruling of suicide, including the condition of Joann's clothing and boots after being found nearly 35 miles away on the Canadian side of the Detroit River. They will then get into some very interesting and conflicting autopsy opinions, as well as evidence that was never tested or was discarded. And of course, will discuss the family's long-running fight to have the investigation reopened. Later on in the episode, potential suspects are discussed along with the theories that continue to fuel debate more than a decade later. While Joann's death remains officially classified as a suicide, her family continues to maintain that she was the victim of homicide and has spent years seeking answers they believe have never been fully investigated. So tell us, what is your theory? 108. Joann Matouk Romain Pt. 1 of 2

Jamie and Kristy introduce the two-part case of Joanne Matouk Romain, a 55-year-old devout Catholic from affluent Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, who vanished on January 12, 2010 and was later found deceased. After a long day that began with a family court proceeding in Detroit, Joanne dropped her son Michael off, stopped for gas, then arrived late to a prayer service at St. Paul’s Catholic Church and left within 10–15 minutes. Witnesses mention a brief car alarm, and later police found the Lexus abandoned and locked near the church, with reports of footprints toward the lake. The episode highlights conflicting timelines, a rapid Coast Guard response and unsuccessful overnight water search, questions about a suicide theory given conditions and circumstances, and oddities involving Joanne’s purse, missing keys, and how keys later appeared with no clear record. 107. SWAC Snack- Jodi Huisentruit, Brian Shaffer, Tracy Ocasio

Jamie and Kristy share a SWAC Snack with recent updates on three missing-person cases they’ve previously covered: Jodi Huisentruit, Brian Shaffer, and Tracy Ocasio. They discuss renewed attention in the Jodi Huisentruit case, including a private investigator receiving tips and circumstantial information leading to one or two suspects and prompting new searches, while urging anyone with information to contact Mason City, Iowa Police. For Brian Shaffer, they clarify his credit card balance was tied to transferring debt to a new card and report police confirmed Douglas Barry as a name previously provided as a lead; they encourage anyone who knows him to contact Columbus Police and note a possible Netflix documentary is in development. They also cover renewed searches in the Tracy Ocasio case around Lake Apopka and nearby waterways and ask for tips to be reported to Ocoee Police. 106. Toby Anderson

Jamie and Kristy cover the little-known disappearance of 16-year-old Toby Eugene Anderson, who vanished in Selma, Oregon, in November 1986 after a troubled childhood that included time in juvenile detention and being sent from California to live with his uncle, Elmer “Billy,” in a crowded two-bedroom trailer. The family’s account claims Billy caught Toby being inappropriate with one cousin, expelled the family for the night, and later dropped Toby at a police station—after which Toby was said to have “run away,” was signed out of school, and was never reported missing until 2017 when cousin Denise began pushing for an investigation. Denise has since raised concerns that Billy may have harmed Toby, noting Billy’s later 2001 conviction for assaulting children and his release in October 2024, and asks anyone with information to contact law enforcement.  Sources: https://share.google/tWy7WY9BWFdnYbKvg https://share.google/iY2iesSqmJdOqvnRk https://share.google/l7mF6bb34nSUwR7vh https://share.google/pqcBP8PcvjiZEaApC (3) Bringing Toby Home | Facebook  Support the show Join our Discussion Group- (4) Speculating Wildly About Crime (SWAC POD) Discussion Group | Facebook Follow us on Facebook- (4) Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093283626257) Follow us on Instagram: Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/swacpod/) Follow us on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@swac.pod?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc Link to You Tube: (4) SWACpod - YouTube  (https://www.youtube.com/@SWACPOD) Music licensed from Premium Beat Groovy by INPLUSMUSIC

    105. Laureen Rahn Collaboration

Jamie and Kristy host a collaborative episode of Speculating Wildly About Crime with guests Missy (Dark Woods Paranormal), Allison (Coffee and Cases), and Kevin (Midnight Mystery Archive) to revisit the 1980 disappearance of 14-year-old Laureen Rahn from Manchester, New Hampshire. They recap key case details from the night she vanished during spring break—unlocked/open doors, a friend in her bed, Laureen’s shoes and belongings left behind, and reports of unscrewed light bulbs—and discuss how limited, repetitive media coverage shaped earlier theories about runaway, abduction, and alleged phone calls. Newer insights from interviews with Laureen’s friends challenge portrayals of a close mother-daughter relationship, question the phone-call narrative, and introduce “Bob,” an uncle by marriage linked to troubling behavior and access to locations like a gravel pit and an abandoned house. The group leans toward someone Laureen knew and highlights a recent law-enforcement push reopening the case and asking classmates, neighbors, and friends to come forward, sharing the New Hampshire Cold Case Unit tip line (603-271-2663) and email (coldcaseunit@dos.nh.gov). 104. Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan (The Crash)

Jamie and Kristy revisit Ohio to discuss the 2022 case featured in Netflix’s The Crash, focusing on victims Dominic Russo (20) and Davion Flanagan (19) and the events leading to their deaths when 17-year-old Mackenzie Shirilla drove a 2018 Toyota Camry into a brick building at roughly 90–100 mph. They review the night at a friend’s house, the short six-minute drive before impact, and crash data showing full throttle, no braking, and last-second steering and gear changes that suggest someone tried to stop the car. They cover background on Dominic and Davion, evidence found at the scene, the debate over intent versus a medical event (including POTS), drug-testing gaps, Shirilla’s trial and appeals, and the controversial concurrent 15-years-to-life sentence with a 2037 parole hearing. 103. SWAC SNACK: Gretchen Fleming Update

Hosts Jamie and Kristy share a brief update on the Gretchen Fleming case from Parkersburg, West Virginia, originally covered in Episode 59. Gretchen was last seen December 4, 2022 after bar-hopping; police initially questioned a man named John but ruled him out, and focused on Preston Pierce (also known as Daryl Lott), who said he gave her a ride and dropped her downtown without her purse or phone. After an earlier search of his former home in November 2024 found nothing, a hunter discovered human remains in September 2025, later identified as Gretchen’s in April/May 2026, reportedly on property tied to Pierce’s sister. Pierce was arrested May 15, 2026 in North Carolina, extradited, and indicted for first-degree murder, felony murder, kidnapping, and concealment/disposal of a body; he was arraigned June 11 without bond and remains in custody as the hosts anticipate a trial in 2027 or later. 102. Kurt Sova

Jamie and Kristy cover the 1981 death of 17-year-old Kurt Sova in Newburgh Heights, Ohio, featured on Season 1 of Unsolved Mysteries. Kurt, a trusted, non-partier, went to a house party with Samuel, became heavily intoxicated, was escorted outside, and vanished while Samuel went back inside to retrieve their jackets. After days of searching and a delayed missing-person response, Kurt was found dead five days later in a ravine about 500 yards from the party house—fully clothed but barefoot, with one shoe later recovered and the other never found. The autopsy suggested he died only 24–36 hours before discovery and listed “probable accidental” death despite unanswered questions, a reportedly poor investigation, and a similar nearby teen death months later. Tips are encouraged via Newburgh Heights Police or Cuyahoga County Crime Stoppers (216-25CRIME).
