    Pleasure, Intimacy & Birth

What if everything you’ve been told about birth is only part of the story? You’re in for a treat today! I was honored to be invited as a guest on the UK’s Our Birth Journey Podcast for a juicy, eye-opening conversation about Orgasmic Birth: Pleasure and the Sexuality of Childbirth. In a culture where birth is so often portrayed as painful, frightening, and something to simply endure, what happens when we open the door to a radically different possibility? What if birth could also be a time of pleasure, connection, empowerment, and even ecstasy? Join me as we discuss the often-overlooked connection between sexuality, pleasure, and childbirth and why reclaiming pleasure in birth may be one of the most powerful ways to transform how we experience and understand childbirth. I’ll also share some surprising stories that may challenge everything you thought you knew about what’s possible during labor and birth! In This Episode * The stories that shaped Debra’s approach to birth: how her great-grandmother’s accounts of giving birth at home helped her imagine birth beyond fear. * The making of Orgasmic Birth: the dream that inspired the documentary, its early working titles, and the unexpected encouragement that helped its final title emerge. * Moving beyond shame: exploring how upbringing, religion, sexual education, and cultural expectations can influence our relationships with our bodies. * Building a daily pleasure practice: making space for small, intentional moments of enjoyment before bringing those preferences into birth preparation. * Trauma, consent, and respectful care: why safety, dignity, and individualized support are central to the conversation. * Preparing for different birth pathways: identifying meaningful comforts, including music, reassuring words, and welcome touch, even when birth involves a cesarean. * Informed decision-making: Debra’s perspective on induction, interventions, and asking questions about options. * Supporting the people who support birth: an invitation for doulas, midwives, and other practitioners to nurture pleasure and connection in their own lives. A Central Takeaway For Debra, Orgasmic Birth® is an invitation rather than a performance goal. It may mean connection, joy, bodily awareness, or the moment of meeting your baby. She encourages listeners to write their own definition—one that reflects their values, boundaries, and circumstances, rather than someone else’s expectations. The conversation also acknowledges that birth can be challenging and that medical technology can be lifesaving when used appropriately. Debra’s emphasis is on bringing respect, agency, and personal comforts into whatever pathway birth takes. A Practice to Take Away Debra closes with a seven-day invitation: * Make a list of simple things that bring you pleasure. * Intentionally include three to five moments each day, lasting one to three minutes. * Try something accessible: savoring a warm drink, dancing to a song, enjoying a favorite taste, or pausing for a welcome moment of connection. * Notice how you feel, without making the practice another task to perfect. For those preparing for birth, she suggests considering which comforts they might want during labor or between contractions—and communicating those preferences to their support team. Resources Mentioned * Orgasmic Birth — Debra’s documentary. * The Ultimate Guide to Sex After Baby * Spiritual Midwifery by Ina May Gaskin. * Sarah Wickham’s resources on induction. * Eat, Pray, Doula — doula education and retreats with Robin Lim. Listener Note This episode discusses sexuality, sexual trauma, childbirth, and medical interventions. It includes personal experiences, opinions, and health-related claims from the speakers; these show notes summarize the conversation rather than independently verify those claims. The episode is intended for education and reflection, not individualized medical advice. Get full access to Orgasmic Birth at orgasmicbirth.substack.com/subscribe

    More Than a Doula Workshop

After more than 35 years of teaching birth doulas, you might think I would be used to hearing the reflections and heartfelt stories that come at the end of a workshop. But the truth is, I still get teary-eyed. Every single time. There is something incredibly moving about witnessing what can happen when a group of people comes together for four days, whether virtually or in person, to learn about birth, supporting others, and what it truly means to be a doula. What begins as a gathering of strangers often becomes something so much more: a community of doulas connected through shared learning, emotions, stories, laughter, tears, healing, and a collective vision of making birth better. For those who have given birth, a doula workshop can bring unexpected moments of reflection. There are often tears as layers of their own birth experiences are revisited, new understandings emerge, and sometimes, healing begins around things they didn’t know or support they didn’t realize they needed. For those who have yet to give birth, the knowledge and preparation can be invaluable, offering a deeper understanding of birth, informed choices, and the importance of feeling supported and heard. And for those who will go on to support friends, family members, and people in their communities, the lessons extend far beyond the birth room. Because I truly believe that doula knowledge, skills, and care are life skills. We learn how to listen more deeply, how to be present without needing to fix, how to offer support without judgment, and how to trust in another person’s strength and ability to find their own way. These are gifts we carry into our relationships, families, communities, and everyday lives. Again and again, I hear participants describe how these four days have changed them in ways they never expected. They came to learn how to be a doula, but they leave with so much more: new friendships, greater confidence, a deeper understanding of themselves and others, and often a renewed sense of purpose. Having had the privilege of teaching more than 10,000 doulas over the years, I sometimes imagine the ripple effect of all those people carrying this knowledge and compassion out into the world. Each one touching lives, supporting families, strengthening communities, and helping make birth a more positive, respectful, and supported experience. What a beautiful ripple effect that is. And what an extraordinary privilege it has been to be a small part of it. Today, I’m delighted to share a video featuring doulas from one of my recent DONA International virtual birth doula workshops. You’ll hear, in their own words, what they learned, what they loved, what surprised them, and what they are taking away from our four days together. Their reflections remind me why, after all these years, I still love this work so deeply. I hope you’ll enjoy hearing their voices and feeling a little of the connection and magic that happens when we gather to learn, share, and grow together. And I’d love to hear from you, too. If you’ve taken a doula workshop, how did it change you? What stayed with you long after those days together? Did it influence not only how you support birthing families, but also how you listen, care, and show up for others in your life? And if you’ve ever been curious about becoming a doula, perhaps these stories will inspire you to take that first step. Learn more about my upcoming virtual and in -person doula workshop and retreats. Because whether or not you ever attend a birth as a doula, I believe the world needs more people who know how to listen, nurture, advocate, and care for one another. And that is something worth celebrating. ❤️ Get full access to Orgasmic Birth at orgasmicbirth.substack.com/subscribe

Living Evolved: Ecstatic Birth, Secure Attachment, and Trusting Your Inner Wisdom

What if birth could be more than something to endure? What if it could be pleasurable, empowering, deeply connected—and even ecstatic? In this episode of The Orgasmic Birth Podcast, Debra Pascali-Bonaro speaks with author, educator, and mother of three, Kitty Stitt, about her unexpected orgasmic birth and the wisdom that has guided her work with women, families, and future educators. Kitty shares how movement, low vocalization, privacy, safety, and trust supported her through three very different births. Her middle daughter’s birth included an unplanned, full-body orgasmic experience—one that helped Kitty recognize the extraordinary capacity of the birthing body when we are able to follow instinct rather than fear. Together, Debra and Kitty explore ecstatic birth, birth sounds, creating a protected birth space, secure attachment, and the possibility of raising children within an ethic of love, peace, and presence. In this episode * Kitty shares the story of her accidental orgasmic birth and the sensations of euphoria, instinct, sound, and deep connection she experienced. * Why low, open vocalization can help some birthing people stay grounded in their bodies rather than moving into fear or overthinking. * The value of an active birth: moving, circling the hips, leaning on a wall, and responding to each contraction in the way your body calls for. * Why a quiet, private, protected birth environment can make space for communication between parent and baby. * The powerful reframe from “tearing” to “stretching” during birth. * How a supportive partner can protect the birth space and offer loving reassurance to both parent and baby. * Why every birth is unique—and why there is no single “right” kind of birth experience. * Kitty’s perspective on secure attachment, responsive caregiving, and finding a few trusted mother mentors rather than becoming overwhelmed by parenting advice. * How peaceful parenting, presence, and loving connection can help shape a more peaceful future. * Practical mantras for pregnancy, birth, and daily life, including: “All is well and I am safe.” About Kitty Kitty Stitt is an author, teacher, and mother of 3 happy daughters, and has been in a loving relationship with her husband, Peter, for 30 years. Kitty is passionate about natural birth and secure attachment bonding. She’s taught health and wellbeing in schools across Australia and the world, including lecturing at The University of Sydney in the Faculty of Education. Through facilitating full-moon women’s circles, retreats and one-on-ones, she guides us to discover our true self, align to it and eventually embody it.
