Estrangement: Turning Pain into Peace

Becky Kolb, Estrangement and Relationship Coach

Estrangement: Turning Pain into Peace Podcast is hosted by me, Becky Kolb. I help Christian women navigating 💔estranged relationships with adult children and next generation family members.  You never thought you would be experiencing estrangement with a loved one and you are looking for support from someone who's been there. That's me. Estrangement brings grief, guilt, shame, confusion and isolation. Women say they feel pressure to forgive or reconcile before they full understand what that means. And sometimes you may not be in a place mentally or spiritually to do that. I understand and felt similarly. 📲DOWNLOAD my FREE workbook to work through estrangement to find peace at: 📲www.beckykolb.com/guideMy estrangement story began with a divorce and remarriage and some decisions around that. The guilt and shame was overwhelming as most of my family didn't speak to me for several years.Growing up in a Christian family, I struggled with some of the decisions I made and even more so with family who judged and rejected me. I felt God was judging me and had also abandoned me. But it was during that estrangement that God met me where I was and overwhelmingly poured out his 💖love and mercy and forgiveness. The God I thought rejected me was standing with arms wide open waiting for me to turn around. Consequences from some of my decisions lingered but his ❤️love and forgiveness carried me through. It was a relationship God wanted with me. Not religion. It was life changing. And it's what brought about reconciliation and restoration of my family. Relationships today that are 💪stronger than ever before.I learned that you can't force reconciliation. Any attempt to change another person is fruitless. The only control you and I have is ourselves and my podcast and coaching focus is on WHOLENESS - creating space to feel grief, discover clarity around responsibility, establish healthy boundaries and gain a renewed sense of self and purpose so that you can live grounded. There are podcasts and coaching that focus on how to reconcile an estranged relationship. I cover some of that, but the primary focus and my passion is you. Helping you heal your heart and discovering who God says you are. Loved, adored and sought after. While others reject, God does not. Discover the inner peace that comes only from a relationship with him. That is the starting point. I offer free no pressure, no obligation discovery calls to see if coaching is right for you. 68: Change Your Thoughts - Change Your Life

Send me a text…what do struggle with most in estrangement Change your thoughts and your life will change. How it changes depends on how you think. Now, this is not the power of positive thinking message. But there is truth to how our thoughts affect our life – either positively or negatively.  Admittedly, I am a skeptic when people start talking about an attitude of gratitude. Those Pollyanna women who are always in a good mood, see the best in others and refuse to get in the dirt when they are down. In fact, with these women, you almost never know that they are struggling.  Estranged relationships create a breeding ground for negative thinking as we’ve discussed before. I’ll share with you today how if you want to change your life, then you’ll need to change your thoughts. Let’s roll.  Find the full transcript for this episode plus resources for women at Estrangement: Turning Pain into Peace at beckykolb.com/68. 67: Mother's Day and Estrangement

Send me a text…what do struggle with most in estrangement Estrangement and Mother’s Day are two attributes that are at odds with one another. And when you are estranged from a son or daughter, it’s a trigger that can send you spiraling into a dark place.  As I’ve talked with some mom’s they’ve expressed that they just want the day to end so they can get on with life. Women work themselves into a tizzy (that’s an expression I heard often growing up) creating anxiety and stress.  Although reconnected with my kids now, I remember several Mother’s Day blues where sadness overwhelmed me. Estranged not only from my kids, but also my mother. My value as a person was at question in my mind. Consequently, it’s a day that I too wanted to pass quickly.  Today I’ll share how you can turn this day into a celebration rather than mourning.  Find the full transcript for this episode plus resources for women at Estrangement: Turning Pain into Peace at beckykolb.com/67. 64: Letting Go of Grudges

Send me a text…what do struggle with most in estrangement Letting go of grudges is rarely easy and certainly nothing happens quickly for most people. Estranged relationships create a hotbed for growing grudges, and you nourish them when you replay and rehearse responses.   Coaching women who have been hurt by a loved one who has chosen to walk away will frequently begin with something like “how could they?” Or I’ll never be able to forgive them for what they’ve done.”  And those words are the foundation for building resentment and deep-seated grudges that bring harm to your soul. Furthermore, you’ll never heal when you are holding a grudge.  Today’s episode will provide some tips for letting go of the resentment so that your heart can begin to heal Let’s settle in for a short message today on getting rid of grudges. 63: The Bridge that Connects

Send me a text…what do struggle with most in estrangement There is a bridge that connects an unsaved heart and that’s the subject of today’s podcast episode. Women have asked me how to handle their unsaved kids especially when estranged.  That’s a worthy question and one that resonates with every Christian mom around the world. I've sometimes overstepped, but always with good intentions. However, your kids will not see it that way. They see it as intrusion into their adult life.  A Mom shared with me that she wrote a lengthy letter to her unsaved kids in hopes that they might be more open once she was gone. Certainly, we desire that our kids find a relationship with Christ but pushing or threatening will only drive them further away.  Listen in today as I share some of the mistakes I made along with some practical tips that can keep you engaged in the spiritual life of your kids.  Find the full transcript for this episode plus resources for women at Estrangement: Turning Pain into Peace at beckykolb.com/63. 62: The Sting of Rejection

Send me a text…what do struggle with most in estrangement The sting of rejection has been on my mind this week. For Christians, it’s Holy Week and I’ve been thinking about conversations I’ve had with women about estrangement.  Moreover, the rejection these women discuss is typically a child who has walked away. Rarely do I speak with anyone where the parent has chosen rejection.  Siblings, In-Laws, and other estrangement also sting, but the emotional pain of your child choosing to end a relationship with you is deeply personal and hurtful.  Holy week creates an opportunity for you to draw closer to the heart of Jesus. Mocking, false accusations, rejection, loneliness and ultimately a sacrificial death. The good news is Sunday is coming and we know He lives.   Today’s episode relates the sting of an estranged relationship you face with the love and understanding of your heavenly father. Let’s dive in. Find the full transcript for this episode plus resources for women at Estrangement: Turning Pain into Peace at beckykolb.com/62. 61: Daughters-In-Law - Made for Connection

Send me a text…what do struggle with most in estrangement As children of God, we are made for connection. Connecting with another in meaningful relationship is one of the greatest joys of life. Family, friends, and co-workers. Neighbors, Church fellowship, and children’s sporting events are all places we find connection.  Conversely, rejection is one of the most painful emotional upheavals that one will ever experience. Abandonment of a relationship runs deep within the soul - cutting through every fiber of your being.  If meaningful connection is a beautiful flourishing garden, rejection is an unsightly heap of twigs and branches tied into bundles to be tossed away. You mourn the loss of that once beautiful shrub that bore fruit. The removal of that relationship even briefly damages your soul.  Today’s episode is a bit longer and will delve into the relationship of our adult kids who marry, have children, and later reject you as a parent. Specifically, this will deal with daughters-in-law who influence your son and his family. I have some personal experience on this one so grab a coffee or tea and sit with me for a bit.  Find the full transcript for this episode plus resources for women at Estrangement: Turning Pain into Peace at beckykolb.com/61.
