    Exploiting Women in the Patriarchal Capitalist Machine | Bite Sized Episode

    This is part 7 of the Enchantments of Mammon series. Capitalism needs a permanent source of unpaid labor. Childbearing, child raising, cooking, cleaning, caregiving, emotional support. The invisible work that keeps society functioning. So patriarchy created an ideology and way to frame femininity through sexism: that being that women are naturally nurturing, women belong in the home, women don't have any need outside of their homely duties. Capitalism has long depended on women's unpaid labor and role in the home to succeed. Anyone critical of capitalism needs to understand the intersectionality of the way that capitalism specifically exploits women and people of color. You can't fix one without addressing the other. Liberation isn't a single issue project. When systems are built in tandem, we have to dismantle them together. And be sure to check out: “The Black Panther” newspaper is back in print after three decades. This was the official publication of the Black Panther Party which ran for 13 years between 1967 and 1980, producing a total of 537 issues. Printing stopped after the FBI, through COINTELPRO, dismantled the organization through intimidation, conspiracy, and violence. To know how much this newspaper is a part of the rich history of the Black Panthers, this reboot is sure to be another marker in that history.     The Torch & the Pail: Talents and Capitalism w Rev Jerry Butler & Rev Andrew Bridgeman

    When you think of Jesus' parable of the talents in Matthew 25, what comes to mind? A story about multiplying your God-given fruits, or perhaps punishing those who are lazy? What about passive protest by not engaging in an exploitative system? I sit down with Jerry Butler and Andrew Bridgeman to discuss this very parable and dig deep as we also breach the topic of capitalism. Jerry Butler holds degrees from LeTourneau University (B.A., M.B.A.) and Perkins School of Theology at SMU (M.Div., summa cum laude). For the past 15 years, he has served United Methodist congregations as educator and pastor, with research interests in Early Church history, St. Augustine, Koine Greek, and Eastern Orthodox Christianity. He is currently the Pastor of Education and Formation at St. Andrew UMC, but by the time this episode releases he will be positioned in Montana. Andrew Bridgeman is an elder in Full Connection serving as the developer of Mountain Sky Trekking and Co-Pastor of the Roaring Fork Church. He is also an avid outdoorsman, theologian, coffee lover, and ecospiritual writer. He is involved with Yarrow Trail Co. where he embraces nature, community, and the sacred.
