A 13-Year-Old, a Judge, and No Lawyer Plus an AI Torture Chamber & The Cornell 7: F@#ked Up Friday

This week’s F****d Up Friday had a common thread, and Libbie Grant named it before the vote: “It’s all misogyny, man.” Dana brought the Cornell 7 case, now in Letitia James’s hands, and one line from Jane Doe that explains why survivors blame themselves first. Libbie, whose new novel The Ended World imagines an AI waking up, brought the developer who built an AI “torture chamber” on GitHub. I brought Angel, the thirteen-year-old who argued his own deportation case alone. In the room, it gets raw fast. Dana takes apart the right’s favorite talking point—why did she act friendly afterward?—with the answer every woman already knows: we’re trained to blame ourselves. The room goes incandescent over Angel’s judge, and the chat starts crying. Then Libbie, a self-described stoner optimist, makes the case that we are going to come out the other side of this. * [27:41] Dana reads the line from the New York Times that shows the moment Jane Doe first understood what had been done to her, a week after the party, in an anonymous Greek-life forum. * [30:27] Lawrence on Julie Roginsky’s Lift Our Voices and its AI tool built to read your NDA and find the ways out, plus the New York push that could carry an NDA ban nationwide. * [36:42] Libbie on the developer who built an AI “torture chamber,” and the question nobody wants to answer: why someone’s first move with a thing that might suffer is to hurt it. * [40:46] Lawrence’s story: a thirteen-year-old named Angel, a Texas immigration judge, and a choice no child should ever be handed. * [50:33] The vote. The chat picks the most f****d up story of the week, and everybody loses. Thanks for listening! Effed-Up Friday: Don Jr., Brendan Carr, and a Dead Whale

Dana’s out, so Dash MacIntyre of The Halfway Cafe and Ellie Leonard of The Panicked Writer pulled up chairs for F****d-Up Friday. Three pitches, one chat vote. Dash brings the Putin-linked oligarch who bankrolled Don Jr.’s wedding. Ellie brings FCC chair Brendan Carr’s nine years in Midtown, the D.C. AA offshoot former members call a cult. I bring the memo that makes killing an endangered species legal, as long as you didn’t mean it. This Substack is reader-supported. To receive new posts and support our work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. Before the pitches, we get into the White House press ban and why the whole press corps walked out. Then it gets gloriously unhinged: champagne on ice for the day it ends, a bundle of sage big enough to smudge all of D.C., and a Putin who greets a fleeing Trump with a ticket to Siberia. The chat picked a winner. As usual, nobody really won because we all live in this s****y timeline. * 07:41—Ellie on the first briefing after the ban: nobody could hear Trump, because guess who brings the microphones. * 31:28—Dash debuts a Halfway Post headline about Eric Trump, a Russian oligarch, and a hamster funeral. Sparky needed that gold-lined shoebox. * 41:49—Trump finally flees to Moscow, and Putin meets him with “Donald who?” and a one-way trip to the gulag. * 42:12—Ellie walks through Midtown, whose late leader was dubbed “the Epstein of AA,” where Carr spent nine years starting at seventeen. * 51:36—The memo’s own example is a dead whale, and Captain Ahab has his best day since 1851. Thanks for listening! F@#ked-Up Friday: The Week Nothing Was Even Guarded

F****d-Up Friday came back this week with a guest, three horrors, and a through-line nobody planned: in every one of these stories, a step that was supposed to happen simply didn’t. Our guest was ProfessorMeredith of Bitchy History, joining from Norwich, England, and she is exactly the kind of brain this show exists to hand a microphone to. She turned in her second master’s thesis on Wednesday. The first one was twenty thousand words on how Star Trek metabolized the politics of its own era. The second is on how 1950s sitcoms trained American girls to want less, and her corpus includes a Father Knows Best episode called “Betty, Girl Engineer,” in which Betty does not become an engineer, because everyone mocks her, and goes on a date with one instead. In October she starts a PhD on how medical dramas handle women seeking abortion care, funded by a three-year fellowship at the American Library in Norwich. She also makes amazing t-shirts. Go subscribe. Then we got to it. Lawrence brought arcade.gov, the five games the White House put on a federal domain Thursday. In Rio Run, a Snake clone, you play a Border Patrol agent and score points for catching people. None of the caught figures is white, they all have black hair, and the instant you grab one the game drops them into an orange jumpsuit. Build the Wall is Tetris with a horde. A White House official called all of it “a culture of fun and winning,” as against “the dark socialist vision Democrats have for America.” They lifted the mechanics so brazenly that Japan’s government has now formally objected twice to this administration’s habit of taking things that aren’t its. Meredith brought the ballots. A Postal Service rule would impose new envelope standards and make states hand over voter data before any mail goes out. Judge Indira Talwani blocked parts of it on August twenty-seventh. The administration ran to the Supreme Court on September third. Responses are due Tuesday morning. North Carolina and Alabama start mailing ballots today. Winning the case was never the objective. Making the results arguable is the objective. Dana brought the meat, again. Corte Argentino USA recalled 29,628 pounds of Argentine beef out of Florida and Texas because the shipment skipped its mandatory import reinspection and went straight to the shelf. Class I, the highest risk category USDA has. They caught it in an audit of import logs, not because anyone got sick, which is a hell of a way to find out your food is safe. The chat voted. Lawrence won with the arcade, and Meredith said she’d have voted for it too, which is the closest thing to a landslide this show has ever certified. Thanks for listening! TDWS: A Vibe Is Not Evidence

We cancelled the show we had planned this morning. We don’t do that. But a line got crossed in this community this week, and there was no version of the two of us doing a normal Friday while it sat there. We started where the world started this week, with Dolly Parton, and by the end she had handed us our organizing principle. Not the tote-bag version, the real one. Watch the old Barbara Walters interview, where Dolly gets asked why a pretty woman bothers with the wigs and the rhinestones and answers without flinching: I know who I am. No temper, no wounded dignity, complete control of the room. That is what what would Dolly do means—calm, compassionate, firm, and completely unwilling to pretend that harm isn’t harm. With Great Claims Comes Great Responsibility So, firmly. An essay went up this week alleging that Ellie Leonard is a fabricated persona built to run interference on the Epstein files, with side claims aimed at Kate Justice and at Cliff. If you present yourself as a working journalist and allege that a real woman is a fake person, you had better arrive with a mountain of evidence. Cross-checked, footnoted, corroborated. Noting that a television character once had a similar name is not a mountain. It isn’t a foothill. It’s a vibe, and a vibe is not journalism. It’s a feeling wearing a press badge. We have all watched where the alternative leads. A president spent years being told to prove he was born here; his instinct was that it was too stupid to dignify, and he was right, and it didn’t matter—a baseless claim plus an army willing to repeat it is a machine that runs on its own. That machine built the world we live in now. Meanwhile the Epstein files, the actual mountain, still haven’t produced the releases and prosecutions they should. If that’s your beat and you’re spending your credibility on a persona theory about a mother doing research, you are aiming a loaded thing at the wrong target. The standard has to survive contact with your own intuition, too. One commenter offered that she had met someone once and simply read that she was a bad person. Friend, respectfully: you are outsourcing your critical thinking to a ghost. The last time an American looked into a man’s eyes and announced he had seen a soul, it was George W. Bush looking into Vladimir Putin’s, and we are all still paying that bill. A hunch is a reason to close a tab, not a reason to join a pile-on. The comment section is the part that turned our stomachs: people volunteering that they had always had a weird feeling, that she had always rubbed them the wrong way. A striking number of the creators taking fire this summer are women, and so were most of the voices doing it. There is no shortage of room at the top; nobody has to clear a space by making one. If your strategy is amplifying unverifiable claims because the frenzy grows your follower count, you are not an activist. You are a mob with a publishing schedule. And one claim here—that Ellie discussed sexual abuse in front of her small children—is untrue, cruel, and capable of real damage to a family if believed. She is also already being stalked. Don’t pour fuel on that. There is a pattern under all of this we would be cowards not to name. This summer the creators drawing fire keep turning out to be Jewish ones, at the exact moment terms like Zio and AIPAC are used as synonyms for Jew. We are both Jewish. One of us says genocide about Gaza, and Holocaust, and apartheid about the West Bank, in print, under his own name. We have both been called Israeli operatives anyway. The first friendship this cost us was lost by gently challenging a claim that Jewish creators were being paid off. That was the first splinter, and it has not stopped since. What Dolly Would Do Here is what we won’t do. We are not psychologists and we are not diagnosing anyone from a livestream. When our own chat started speculating about the author’s family, we shut it down, because conjecture is conjecture no matter which direction it points. She appears to be having a hard time, and we have both had seasons of being certain the world was organized against us. It is terrifying, and we are sorry it is happening to her. Both things are true at once: we hope she is okay, and the claims are false and doing harm. Compassion is not agreement, and neither cancels the other. We are also not doing this again tomorrow. We get tagged into these things constantly and decline, because there is too much real work. Sixty-seven days to the midterms. Before you spend another afternoon in a comment section, ask the Dolly question, and then ask ours: is this going to flip the Senate? Nobody reaches the end of their life proud that they yelled at a woman researching the Epstein files because another woman on the internet told them to. That is a tragic waste of a mind, and you only get the one. If you don’t like us, don’t watch. It’s Substack; there are a million other channels, and we are certifiably not for everybody. But if you’re going to make things up about the people we love, bring your footnotes. —Dana & Lawrence Thanks for being here! TDWS: Effed-Up Friday With Marlon Weems

We always love when Marlon joins us on The Daily Whatever Show. We had an incredible chat before the F****d-up Friday competition even began—as we discussed the $40 trillion national debt, reparations, what our spending says about our values, the increasingly terrifying surveillance state, those horrific ICE shock gloves, and Caroline Levitt resignation once she realized Trump sent her (and Marco Rubio and the entire press corp) on a decoy plane. Big yikes for her. Then we launched into our F****d-up Friday competition... and you’re gonna have to tune in to hear which stories we thought were even more f****d-up than all that. Thank you Cat: Poli-Psych, Caro Henry, Ms.Yuse, NeuroDivergent Hodgepodge, Diane Johnston, and many others for tuning in. Thanks for listening!
