028 Mailbag Q&A: Open Water, Bikes, Choosing Your First Full & More!

You all sent the questions, so this one's a mailbag — ten of them, rapid-fire (ish). We cover a lot of ground: how to actually get comfortable in open water, whether you need a tri bike for your first race (you don't — you might not even need a road bike), and what a realistic runway to your first full Ironman looks like. From there I get into the training-tool stuff — when a power meter is worth it, when to hire a coach versus going it alone, how I program run-walk as an actual race strategy, and how much time off you can really take without losing your fitness. Plus how I think about strength training across the season, keeping fueling simple on long days, and what I do with race-day nerves when they show up. Give it a listen on your next easy run or commute, and drop a DM if you have any questions!   Mailbag episode today! Let’s dive in …  Open water — "Open water still scares me. What's the best way to get comfortable with it before my first race?" Bike selection — "Do I need a tri bike for my first race, or is my road bike fine to start on?" First full timeline — "How much time should I give myself before signing up for my first full Ironman?" Power meter — "Power meter or no power meter? Is it worth the money when I'm still newer to this?" Coaching vs. self-guided — "How do I know when it's time to hire a coach instead of just following a plan on my own?" Run vs. run-walk — "Is run-walk only a beginner thing, or can it actually be the smarter way to race?" Time off — "How much time off can I take without losing all my fitness?" Strength training — "How do I fit strength work in without it wrecking my swim, bike, and run?" Fueling — "What's the simplest way to start fueling right on long training days?" Race-day nerves (my add) — "What do you actually do with the nerves the morning of a race?"
