After being a long time listener and following across multiple production changes, I noticed I’d fallen off listening. I realized why after coming back and trying a few. DSM used to be a gentle but direct interrogation of hard to discuss subjects. Now it’s become a basic interview show, and this is not Anna’s strength. I’ve come to see her as pretty narcissistic, but the kind of narcissist who presents with faux insight (speaking as a psychoanalyst). This is fine in itself, it’s a common enough quality. But she has been interviewing people with this same quality, whether the one on cosmetic surgery, or motherhood, without actually interrogating them that deeply. So the conversation becomes quite boring. And also she’s interviewing George Saunders and a Senate candidate? What is going on here? DSM has really changed over time but holding on to its branding.

So you have a gay teacher who is encouraging male students to start a TikTok and they magically come out as gay? I don’t care where this guy has degrees from. He doesn’t seem very smart. Having been in the military in the 90s, we all knew who was gay and we didn’t care. It is not always the cisgender male’s fault sometimes it’s just your fault. Put yourself into dumb situations. Nobody hates you so stop being the victim. And when you’re out at 2 o’clock in the morning, other people are allowed to be out too, there are bars that are not just for gay people.

I’ve been a long time listener and fan of Death Sex & Money for the longest time. I’ve enjoyed the thoughtfulness of Anna’s interviews and the dedication to storytelling. I was even more excited when the show got picked up by SLATE, and was given life once again. However, I actually haven’t listened to an episode in about 6 months because the FREE version of interviews haven’t been up to the standard that I recognize, and now we are getting old, recycled stuff. All of the really JUICY stuff is behind a paywall. Just bums me out. I don’t have enough money to fund every podcast that I enjoy.
