Mortality (all-cause, cardiovascular disease, and cancer) and longevity in former elite athletes with prof. Melitta Mcnarry | EP#302

Professor Melitta Mcnarry of Swansea University has recently published a meta-analysis on the health and mortality (all-cause, cardiovascular disease, and cancer) consequences of an elite sporting career. Here, she discusses the findings and the potential implications.

IN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL LEARN ABOUT:
-Reasons for conducting the meta-analysis, including questions marks around whether a high amount of exercise might be detrimental rather than beneficial for health and longevity
-The significantly reduced mortality in elite athletes, in particular endurance athletes and team sport athletes
-Potential reasons for the reduced mortality
-The relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness and protection against cardiovascular disease
-Potential reasons for why elite endurance athletes had greatly reduced cardiovascular disease mortality, but no difference compared to the general population for cancer mortality

In this episode, Professor Robert Lamberts (Stellenbosch University) and Annemiek Roete (University of Groningen) discuss their recent systematic review on (noninvasive) markers of functional overreaching in endurance athletes. We also discuss the Lamberts Submaximal Cycle Test (LSCT), and it's application in triathlon as a monitoring tool as well as its application as a performance indicator.

IN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL LEARN ABOUT:

-Which markers are the best for assessing non-functional overreaching, and how many (or how few) should you be monitoring?
-Is functional overreaching necessary or beneficial for endurance adaptations?
-What is the LSCT (Lamberts Submaximal Cycle Test) protocol?
-The LSCT as a performance predictor in triathlon

My Absolute Favorite Podcast

After completing my first open water 5k swim race in May of this year, I started triathlon training with my coach. I LOVE it. Being new to this kind of endurance sport and training, I started exploring podcasts and books. Mikael’s podcast has been a huge source of inspiration and knowledge for me. I listen to it weekly and many of the episodes repeatedly. His topical focus, his relevancy for us age-groupers who are new to this sport is simply BEST-IN-CLASS.

If you are an age group triathlete, no matter your experience level, try this podcast and explore the archives. You will love it.

On a personal note; his interviews with Tim Noakes and others inspired me to breakthrough perceived performance barriers and finally break 2:00/100m in my swimming…huge for me.

Thanks Mikael.

Great podcast

This is the best sports related podcast I’ve found. The host is very knowledgeable and does a great job finding subject matter experts related to varying topics related to endurance training. His interviewing style is very effective. Many times I’ve heard or read the information from another source, but the way it odd presented on this show often makes it click where it wasn’t quite getting through to me before.

Tobey2014 ,

This is great!

This podcast is it such an intelligent and well thought out presentation by Mikael. He clearly prepares for many hours for each of his guests in order to get the most from the approximately one hour presentation. The amount of knowledge “pearls“ in each episode is really amazing. He is really good at distilling complex subjects in exercise physiology into clear and understandable language. I love going over the show notes and finding more references. I cannot imagine that anyone would do a better triathlon podcast! I’ve even recommended it to friends who are not triathletes just by virtue of the intelligence and spirit of good humor on display. In short, it’s fun to listen to. You can tell that the guests really enjoy speaking with Michael. He keeps his own ego out of the mix and consistently brings out the best in people. This is not a trivial skill. What a find!
