Hiding In Plain Sight With Mental Illness

Hiding In Plain Sight With Mental Illness

In this episode Mat chats with Melanie Gibson, author of the book ‘Kicking And Screaming - a memoir of madness and martial arts’ who lives in the USA and shares her life of hiding in plain sight with mental illness.

Whilst the conversation initially followed the obvious path of linking Melanie’s return to Taekwondo and the associated benefits of focus, physical and mental stimulation, community; the discussion shifted and dove down the rabbit hole of eating disorders, something Melanie labels a ‘mental illness’ and has lived with since she turned 13 years old.

As one reviewer commented, “Melanie's book is not a martial arts story. It’s the terrifying tale of a beautiful soul at war with itself.” As you’ll hear, Melanie gave Mat permission to discuss any subjects related to her journey, and such candidness requires courage.

On The Unleashing Potential Podcast, we interview progressive individuals who are unleashing their potential on the world around them. We take a deep dive on how they got to where they are, what lessons they have learned along the way, and how their experiences can impact us all.

Mental Health is a subject that touches the lives of almost everyone on the planet at some stage. The Impact Project is an active supporter of Lifeline Australia, the nation's suicide prevention service. In addition to helping to pay for calls to support those in their darkest moments, it is our hope that we can extend our reach through sharing these conversations.

So throw in the ear-buds and listen to Melanie as she shares her experience of hiding in plain sight with mental illness.

And if you like it, we’d love you to share it.

Making Alcohol Insignificant In Your Life

Making Alcohol Insignificant In Your Life

On this episode of the Unleashing Potential Podcast Mat chats with Karolina Rzadkowolska, a certified alcohol-free life coach and Amazon bestselling author. Karolina describes herself as working with dreamers and doers who want to see what they are capable of without alcohol weighing them down and holding them back from realising their full potential.

Mat and Karolina discussed how alcohol has achieved such an ingrained level of normalcy within most Western societies and the social stigmas that perpetuate the drinking culture.

This is not a conversation that seeks to demonise alcohol. It’s a conversation that takes a deep dive into the psychology of drinking alcohol and seeks to redress the balance of our neurochemistry so that we can find euphoria in so many other pursuits.

On The Unleashing Potential Podcast, we interview progressive individuals who are unleashing their potential on the world around them. We take a deep dive on how they got to where they are, what lessons they have learned along the way, and how their experiences can impact us all.

Katrina demonstrated her depth of knowledge in an unassuming and disarming way. She generously provided a step-by-step approach for gently challenging your own relationship with alcohol and has certainly lowered the barrier to entry for these discussions.  More information can be found at her website - the links are in the show notes.

On this episode of the Unleashing Potential Podcast, Mat chats with Ben Reuter, PhD, about the importance of ‘movement’. Ben is also the host of ‘Moving2Live’ podcast, a platform on which he interviews a range of health and medical professionals on the subject of movement being a lifestyle.

In their discussion, Mat and Ben help to break down the stigmas that surround the traditional concepts of ‘fitness training’ and, instead, talk about practical ways that you can use movement to enhance both the quality and duration of life.

Ben talked about his Top 5 takeaways, so far, from the amazing range of professionals he has interviewed. As will be obvious to anyone listening to/watching, Ben’s passion for the subject of movement meant that his Top 5 was closer to Top 6-8 but, they‘re invaluable knowledge bombs and are perfectly positioned to appeal to anyone on this planet!

Ben’s Top 5(ish) subjects included the following:

What's the best type of exercise?

    Don’t over complicate it…
Be aware of what you eat
Make a daily appointment with yourself
    Move frequently
Ridding your life of energy vampires

On The Unleashing Potential Podcast, we interview progressive individuals who are unleashing their potential on the world around them. We take a deep dive on how they got to where they are, what lessons they have learned along the way and how their experiences can impact us all.

    Is Your Excellence Killing You?

    Is Your Excellence Killing You?

In this episode, Mat chats with Debra Sunderland and learns how a competitive cyclist suffered a brain injury yet felt grateful for almost dying.

Debra is living proof that there is innate power in choosing to shift from the relentless pursuit of excellence to one of genius-ship.

Following her brush with death, Debra discovered her true genius is creating a clear vision for CEO's and their teams - helping to make their visions a reality. She challenges leaders by inviting them to create a collaborative, vibrant, responsible, and joy-filled culture, which fosters highly desirable results.

She knows first-hand that those who achieve the most usually suffer the most. Traditional leadership is so often filled with limiting beliefs, unconscious biases, and sabotaging behaviours. Instead, why not choose a sustainable level of excellence and self-awareness in all aspects of your life.

On The Unleashing Potential Podcast we interview progressive individuals who are unleashing their potential on the world around them. We take a deep dive into how they got to where they are, what lessons they have learned along the way, and how their experiences can impact us all.

Ready to hear all about this fascinating topic? You know what to do - open the mind, plugin, be ready to be confronted. And as always, if you like it, feel free to share it.

From Aspirational Success To Attempted Suicide

From Aspirational Success To Attempted Suicide

In this episode Mat and his guest, Simon Stephen talk about how the way in which we work has changed forever. From his side, Simon previously spent 25 years in the corporate world working for some of the biggest names in the industry.

On the face of it, he was very successful and had the kind of life most would dream of - earning huge amounts of money, big houses, cars, holidays, a beautiful wife, and all the trappings of a life revolving around materialism and corporate reward.

But this kind of increasing demand on employees to perform at the highest levels for prolonged periods is far in excess of what would be deemed healthy by medical professionals. And as Simon learned first hand, this trend has led to an inevitable increase in work-related stress, physical and mental exhaustion, emotional breakdown, and tragically, suicide.

Simon shares how he was suffering in silence underneath a facade of ’success’ - addicted to prescription painkillers, drinking heavily, behaving callously and selfishly towards family, friends, and colleagues, hurting other people who didn't deserve it, and on a path of self-destruction that led to him forcing open a hotel window in London and attempting to take his own life.

Thankfully, that moment changed his life trajectory, and whilst shame played its part in giving him the willpower to take responsibility for previous wrongs, he realised that the sincerest apology he could give is to exhibit a consistent change of behaviour and make kindness his default.

He loves talking about the massive, fundamental changes he has made to his life to help him get out of his suicidal state. Moving overseas to a remote hill farm in Portugal, starting a winery, growing Olives, getting fit and healthy, creating his well-being brand, and moving into a career dedicated to helping others.

His 'brand' is called Intorcida (Intorcida: IN - TOR - SEE - DA, Verb [slang]: To Un-Twist yourself) which provides services geared towards helping people recognise, understand, and counter the stresses of corporate life.

On The Unleashing Potential Podcast, we interview progressive individuals who are unleashing their potential on the world around them. We take a deep dive into how they got to where they are, what lessons they have learned along the way, and how their experiences can impact us all.

This is a candid, ‘no holds barred’ deep dive into a person's darkest moment and bouncing beyond to lead a life of gratitude and service. Simon needs no sympathy, nor does he ask for it. He has sought forgiveness from those around him during his difficult years and is now on a path of real meaning and, some would say, real success.

So chuck in your earbuds and, if you like what you hear, remember to share the love by sending the link to someone you think would also benefit from hearing this.

    Why Sleep Matters

    Why Sleep Matters

This is a bonus episode of the Unleashing Potential Podcast that focuses on a topic that could be the single most important lifestyle behaviour that’s stopping you from performing at your peak at work and in life.

It’s also a topic that could be having a hugely detrimental impact on your health and life expectancy.

    And that’s not hyperbole!

The subject is sleep and this conversation focussed on WHY sleep matters. Mat Lock had the opportunity of talking with Filipa Bellette and the conversation quickly took a deep dive into the physiological implications of not getting enough sleep each and every night.

Filipa is one of Australia’s leading Functional Medicine practitioners who is passionate about helping her clients improve a range of important lifestyle related behaviours, of which sleep is one. She generously shared some key takeaways for ‘why’ we sleep and then a tangible, real-life walk through the ‘HOW TO’ of improving sleep hygiene.

On the Unleashing Potential Podcast, we interview progressive individuals who are unleashing their potential on the world around them. We take a deep dive on how they got to where they are, what lessons they have learned along the way and how their experiences can impact us all.

This is a great conversation for anyone who is not regularly getting 7-8 hours of sleep every night. Mat shared some of his realties around sleep and was treated to an ‘in the moment’ coaching session that was as valuable for him as it will be for every listener of this episode.

So, reframe the idea of ‘pillow talk’ and get ready to be guided through a ‘sleep 101’ mini masterclass with one of Australia’s leading experts. Throw on your headphones and, if you like what you hear, remember to share the love by sending the link to someone you think would also benefit from hearing this.
