  • Gnostic Sophia and the Suppressed Christian Mysteries (Anne Baring Part 3)

    15 Sept

Gnostic Sophia and the Suppressed Christian Mysteries (Anne Baring Part 3)

What if early Christianity contained a path centered on direct knowledge of the divine within us, and that path was pushed outside the Church that survived? This is Part 3 of my multi-part series of conversations with Anne Baring, recorded across September and October 2026. While each episode can stand on its own, I recommend beginning with Part 1, The Forgotten Feminine Face of God, followed by Part 2 on Marija Gimbutas and the civilization of Old Europe. ☽ In this conversation, Anne and I enter the world of Gnostic Christianity and a Yeshua many of us were never introduced to: a teacher concerned with awakening human beings to the divine light within themselves. That understanding of Jesus sits uneasily beside the Christianity that eventually gained institutional power in Rome. We start with Parmenides, the pre-Socratic philosopher whose surviving poem describes a journey into darkness, guidance from the daughters of the Sun, and knowledge received directly from a goddess. Anne sees him as part of a more ancient visionary tradition that continued into Gnosticism, where gnosis meant direct knowledge of the divine rather than religious belief alone. From there, we get into the Gnostic Yeshua, the discovery of the Nag Hammadi texts, and why a Christianity built around the divine light within the human being came into conflict with the Church that gained power in Rome.  Sophia is at the center of the episode. In Pistis Sophia, Divine Wisdom descends from her celestial home, becomes lost, and has to find her way back toward the Light through thirteen metanoias, or changes in consciousness. Anne compares her story with the Christian interpretation of the Fall, especially the guilt and disobedience that became attached to Eve. Sophia gives us another way of understanding what has gone wrong. She has lost touch with where she came from and mistakes a lesser light for the true one. Her task is to wake up, learn to see differently, and remember. We also spend part of the conversation with Carl Jung. Anne trained as a Jungian analyst, and she talks about Jung’s own visionary experiences, Philemon, The Red Book, his fascination with the Gnostics, and the task he believed he had failed to complete before his death: restoring the reality of the soul to Western consciousness.  Near the end, Anne reads from Trimorphic Protennoia, where the Divine Feminine speaks in the first person, and The Hymn of the Pearl, a Gnostic poem she has lived with for roughly sixty years. Both return us to the idea running through this entire conversation: that spiritual life begins in remembering what we are and where we came from. ☿ ANNE BARING Official website: https://www.annebaring.com/ BOOKS BY ANNE BARING Divine Wisdom and the Holy Spirit: The Forgotten Feminine Face of God The Myth of the Goddess with Jules Cashford The Dream of the Cosmos Messages From a Transcendent Dimension GNOSTIC TEXTS DISCUSSED Pistis Sophia Trimorphic Protennoia The Sophia of Jesus Christ The Hymn of the Pearl The Nag Hammadi codices The Gospel of Thomas The Gospel of Philip CARL JUNG The Red Book Seven Sermons to the Dead Answer to Job ALSO MENTIONED Parmenides G.R.S. 8: How To Silence Your Busy Mind In Minutes (We Tested The Tools)

In this episode, Matt and Corisande run through every tool they personally use to manifest, meditate and reset when life throws them off track. From a five year memory journal that has followed Matt through three years of milestones, to a headband that reads your brainwaves in real time, to an eye mask that sends Corisande into a kaleidoscope of colour and an altered state, live on camera. They also open up the Beyond community mailbox to answer questions on staying in your being state when the people around you are skeptical, learning to trust the unfolding instead of the timeline, keeping your quantum field vibrating positively when life gets messy, and handling the identity whiplash that hits once a major manifestation actually lands. Matt & Corisande discuss: Why a one line a day, five year memory book might be the only form of diary either of them keeps, and how it changes the way you see your own progressHow to stay in your being state when someone close to you is skeptical of your manifestation practiceWhy letting go of a desire is less about belief and more about making peace with timeInside Matt's nightly journaling ritual, and the four pages he handwrites by hand every single dayThe Muse headband that turns meditation into real-time, gamified feedback on your brainwavesThe Illuminate Nova eye mask that put Corisande into an altered state within minutes, live on the podcast Chapters 00:00:00 Intro 00:02:56 Why You Need A One Line A Day Journal 00:09:07 Staying In Your Being State Around Skeptics 00:14:44 Learning To Let Go And Trust The Unfolding 00:19:05 Inside Matt's Nightly Journaling Practice 00:26:26 Join the Beyond Community 00:26:50 Keeping Your Quantum Field Vibrating Positively 00:31:11 Using The Muse Headband To Track Your Brainwaves 00:34:47 Join Matt in Barcelona 00:36:22 Navigating Baseline Shock After A Big Manifestation 00:44:00 Staying Consistent When Life Gets Busy 00:46:44 Trying The Illuminate Nova Eye Mask Live About Matt & Corisande Matt is a manifestation coach, speaker and the author of Beyond Wanting: The Art of True Manifestation and has spent years teaching people how to work with the quantum field to manifest their future and create their best life. Ep 13 - Tertullian and the Theology of Sarcasm

Sarcastic, bombastic, and brilliant, Tertullian of Carthage may be the most entertaining of the Church Fathers. He also did more than anyone else to launch theology in the Latin language. His life and his work were provocations to his opponents—who included many pagans and more than a few Christians. Learn about him (and the fascinating world of early North African Christianity) in this episode. Season 1, Episode 19

Ep. 19 - Origen: The Most Controversial Christian Ever?

Origen of Alexandria was one of the most important figures in Christian antiquity—most brilliant and most productive—yet also one of the most complicated. He was widely influential and widely despised. He was praised for his accomplishments and blamed for disasters. He wrote thousands of books and invented several academic disciplines, including scientific biblical studies, fundamental theology, and spiritual theology. Toward the end of life he endured tortures rather than deny the faith; and he died a hero's death. This is the first of two episodes on his life and work. Ep. 18 - The Short, Happy Life of Cyprian of Carthage

He was a believer for little more than a decade, but in that time he managed to set one of the pre-eminent examples of Christian leadership. Before his conversion, Cyprian had lived the Carthaginian dream. He was wealthy and successful, but miserable and maybe addicted to drink and other pleasures. With his baptism came a transformation. Within a year he was ordained a priest. In two years he was bishop over all of North Africa. His years in office were a time of unprecedented crisis. His Church faced persecution, pandemic, catastrophic climate change, and famine. He managed all with grace and won his prominent place in history before dying as a martyr. Ep. 17 - The Long, Strange Trip of Hippolytus of Rome

He started as a papal critic, became history's first antipope, and today is honored — with the pope he rejected — as a saint whose feast day is universal. Go figure. Hippolytus of Rome is one of the great curiosities of early Christian history. In ancient times he was known for his encyclopedic books of theology, which became standard reference works in the centuries to follow. The Church revived his Mass prayers in the last century, and they're still in use today. • Ep. 16 - Clement of Alexandria: Teacher in a New Kind of School

    Season 1, Episode 16

Ep. 16 - Clement of Alexandria: Teacher in a New Kind of School

Alexandria, in Egypt, was the intellectual capital of the Greco-Roman world, and as the second century turned to the third it emerged as an influential center of Christian thought. Its first impression was spectacular — and it all came from a teacher named Clement. He was a seeker after truth, and had traveled the Mediterranean to study under the greatest Christian teachers. He settled in Alexandria, the site of a newly founded school, and eventually he came to lead the school. Several of Clement's works have survived, including his great trilogy on the spiritual and moral life. Any Christian who has pursued the life of prayer in the great Christian tradition has encountered ideas developed by Clement. • Ep. 15 - Perpetua: A Rare Female Voice from Antiquity

    Season 1, Episode 15

Ep. 15 - Perpetua: A Rare Female Voice from Antiquity

Perpetua of Carthage is almost unique in the literature of her time. She is a woman and a writer. Over the course of centuries, traditional Greco-Roman culture produced very few female writers. Nor did ancient literature bother much with the particular concerns of women. So Perpetua stands out as a witness to women's experience in the third century—and the changed status of women in the Church. A Christian martyr, she kept a diary while in jail. The diary records ordinary details, such as visits from family members and the conditions of the prison. But it also tells of extraordinary visions. Perpetua speaks of pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, and weaning. In prison she emerges as a charismatic leader of her fellow Christians. Her diary is an extraordinary record, and it is a beautiful meditation on Christian life.
