I Don't Know How to Help My Kids Feel at Home When Home Keeps Changing

How do we help our children navigate change when their hearts are breaking over what they're leaving behind? In this week's episode of Pardon the Mess, Scarlet Hiltibidal shares from a lifetime of moving, from her childhood years spent relocating across the country to the many ministry moves she's made as a wife and mom. She explores the unique challenges of helping children process transitions, say goodbye to people and places they love, and learn to trust God in unfamiliar seasons. Drawing from personal stories of moving with young children, leaving beloved churches and communities, and helping her family build new lives in new places, Scarlet discusses the tension many parents feel: wanting their children to embrace what's ahead without minimizing the grief of what's being left behind. But this episode isn't ultimately about moving. It's about belonging. It's about helping our children understand that while homes, schools, churches, friendships, and circumstances may change, God never does. Through biblical examples like Abraham, Moses, Ruth, and the Israelites, Scarlet highlights a powerful theme woven throughout Scripture: God's people have always been travelers, strangers, and sojourners learning to trust Him in unfamiliar places. The Christian life has never been about finding perfect security in this world. It's about learning to anchor our hearts in the One who never changes. In this episode, Scarlet discusses: • How to help children grieve the people, places, and routines they love • Why grief is not evidence that a move or transition was a mistake • The tension of feeling both excitement and sadness during major life changes • Biblical examples of faithful people who followed God into the unknown • Why earthly homes, relationships, and comforts make poor ultimate foundations • How transitions reveal where we are placing our security and identity • Practical ways to help children build trust in God's faithfulness during uncertain seasons • How to cultivate gratitude for God's gifts without clinging too tightly to them Today's Scripture Focus: Hebrews 11:13–16 A special thank you to Caroline Downen who shared her own moving to Japan and back experience during the Messy Mom Moment! Toddler Milestones (12-24 months): What's Normal, What's a Red Flag, and When to Stop "Waiting and Seeing" with Tots on Target | Ep. 147

If you've ever sat at a well check, brought up a concern about your toddler, and been told to just "wait and see"... this episode is for YOU. Allison is a pediatric physical therapist (and a mom of four who had four kids in five and a half years, so she GETS it), and she is breaking down exactly what your 12 to 24 month old should be doing, when, and how to tell the difference between a kid developing on their own timeline and an actual red flag worth chasing down. But the part that gave me chills? Her reminder that YOU are the team leader for your child. Not the pediatrician, not the PT, not the preschool teacher, YOU. And that your mother's intuition and even your "I know I shouldn't compare but..." observations are not something to feel guilty about. They're information. In this episode, we talk about: The real timeline for walking (and why your baby probably won't walk by their first birthday)What to look for from 18 months to 2 years: running, climbing, standing from the middle of the room, fine motor skillsThe ONE milestone that's a definite, non-negotiable age (hint: it's jumping)Why milestones are "like math" and build on each otherHow to tell a developmental timeline difference from a true red flagThe "wait and see" problem, and when NOT to waitWhy you are the team leader for your childWhy comparing your child to others isn't something to feel guilty aboutSimple, cheap at home activities to jumpstart development Everyday "klutzy" struggles that can actually point to body awareness challengesProprioception and the vestibular system explained in a way that finally makes senseSensory seeking vs. sensory avoiding, and what's totally normalHow to make accommodations for a sensitive kid while still giving exposureThe SINGLE most important thing you can do in this window ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT LINKS •✨ Join our Mom Club on Patreon HERE ✨ 👈🏼 • Check out Laila’s Clean Makeup Bag Staples HERE • Or shop the whole nontoxic makeup site HERE           ◦ Use Code ADVOCATE10 for 10% off! • Connect with Allison HERE ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- toddler milestones, 12 to 24 month milestones, toddler milestones by age, when should my baby walk, baby not walking at 15 months, toddler not walking, late walker, when do toddlers jump, when do toddlers run, toddler gross motor skills, toddler fine motor skills, milestones build on each other, developmental red flags toddler, wait and see pediatrician, when to get early intervention, pediatric physical therapy, mother's intuition child development, comparing my child to others, parent as team leader, toddler coordination problems, clumsy toddler, body awareness in toddlers, proprioception in children, vestibular system kids, sensory seeking toddler, sensory avoidant toddler, sensory processing toddler, toddler accommodations sensory, toddler stairs milestones, free play for toddlers, open ended play toddlers, at home activities for toddlers, gross motor activities toddlers, Tots on Target, toddler development podcast, motherhood podcast, first time mom podcast, parenting podcast for toddler moms, best motherhood podcast, christian motherhood podcast, crunchy mom podcast, toddler parenting tips

Being the Man Your Family Needs (Part 2 of 2)

A lot of guys need direction, meaning, and purpose for their lives but are struggling to find it. They hear what a man is NOT supposed to be but aren’t sure what they ARE supposed to be. Author and radio host Brant Hansen makes some brilliant observations about what women need men to be - and six key decisions men can make to set themselves apart from the rest. Alluding to the creation story, Brant encourages men to be “Keepers of the Garden” – secure, confident protectors, who are chasing after Christ.   Receive a copy of The Men We Need and an audio download of "Being the Man Your Family Needs" for your donation of any amount!   Get More Episode Resources    If you enjoyed listening to Focus on the Family with Jim Daly, please give us your feedback.

‘It’s the Longest Relationship of Your Life’ Catherine Carr & Georgia Jones on Siblings, Favouritism & Why Birth Order Isn’t Destiny

This week on Mum’s The Word, Georgia Jones sits down with award-winning broadcaster and Relatively host Catherine Carr to talk about the relationship we rarely know how to talk about: the one with our siblings. Her debut book, Who’s The Favourite?, busts the myths and shares the science behind the brothers and sisters we love and occasionally want to throttle. Why might siblings be the longest relationship of your life? Why is no child ever born into the same family? And why do labels like the golden child, the funny one or the baby follow us into adulthood? Catherine and Georgia get into birth order, the truth about only children, whether firstborns really are cleverer, sibling rivalry, and the stat that 74% of parents admit to having a favourite. Plus the beautiful idea that reframes it all: that family isn’t a hierarchy, it’s a constellation. Find out more: Listen to Catherine’s podcast RELATIVELY Get the book WHO’S THE FAVOURITE? Ep. 152: A Candid Q&A about Catholicism—Part 1 (with Pastor Rick Witmer)

You asked, we’re answering! After months of receiving questions about Catholicism, I decided it was time to dive in.  I’ve invited Wit (my pastor) to join me as we address FAQs about Catholicism from Protestants (Part 1) and answer questions about Protestants from Catholics (Part 2).  For Part 1, Wit interviewed a local Catholic priest, Father Gavin, to ensure that our answers accurately reflect the Catholic perspective. Any answers he gives in this episode either come directly from Father Gavin’s responses or from other sources accepted by the Catholic Church.  Although we provide some commentary in this episode, our goal is primarily to faithfully convey the Catholic viewpoint on some of the most common questions I received (such as whether Catholics worship Mary or why they believe in purgatory).  We hope this episode provides clarity for those non-Catholic listeners who find themselves wondering about common points of confusion.  Enjoy! Growing in gentleness when you’re tired and stretched thin with Christie Thomas

In today’s episode, Christie Thomas is back to talk about the quiet strength of gentleness and why it matters so deeply in our homes. Christie shares how gentleness is not weakness or passivity, but strength held under control for the good of others. We discuss parenting through the fruit of the Spirit, responding instead of reacting, and how our kids learn about the character of Jesus through the way we handle frustration, conflict, and mistakes.  We also talk honestly about the exhaustion of parenting, spiritual dry seasons, postpartum anxiety, worship as prayer, and simple ways to stay connected to God when you feel overwhelmed.  This conversation is full of practical encouragement for parents who want to build homes marked by patience, safety, grace, and the gentleness of Christ.
