    14 Sept

America’s most wanted: my family on the run, part 1

In some ways Zayd Ayers Dohrn’s childhood was normal; his parents went to work and played with him in the park. Though in other ways it was anything but: moving between safe houses, fleeing in the night as the FBI moved in. His parents were the leaders of a violent revolutionary group called the Weathermen and then the Weather Underground, which the US government classed as a domestic terror group. They opposed the Vietnam war and racism in American society. They drew attention to their cause though bombing campaigns targeting government institutions from police stations to the Pentagon. The group were largely white college graduates, they worked with militant black organisations such as the Black Liberation Army to organise bank robberies and jailbreaks. By the time Zayd was born his parents had been fugitives for several years. They taught him how to identify the FBI agents who were looking for them and how to lose a tail if he was being followed. For Zayd, as a small child, it was a game – but one with potentially serious consequences as his parents' activities could see them sent to prison for years. However, they wanted him to go to school and for him to do this they decided to hand themselves in. Benson Boone Caught With His Pants Down & A Bonus Ask Uncut!

Hey Lifers! We have such a special one for you today. If it sounds a little different, that's because we recorded this in Benson Boone's room (yes, he invited us up!). And if you're wondering why Britt is flying solo for the intro, it's because Benson was SUCH a vibe that we spent half our time just chatting and laughing, the interview ran way over, and Laura had to sprint off for kid pick-up. You know Benson from "Beautiful Things", the biggest-selling single on the planet in 2024 and now 12-times-platinum here in Australia. But nothing prepared us for how open, unhinged and genuinely lovely he is. Today he tells us a story he's never told publicly which ends with his pants fully around his ankles. He also opens up about not owning a smartphone until he was 17, nearly becoming an architect, and how "Ghost Town" was literally the first song he ever wrote. He tells us about growing up with four sisters and his one and only celebrity crush (it runs in the family). Then he weighs in on a Lifer who's secretly dating two men at once, and answers the big one: would he ever date a fan? Benson brings the Wanted Man Tour to Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney this November. It's almost sold out, so get amongst it! YouTube Timestamps0:00 – Britt's solo intro: inside Benson's room and how a press junket actually works3:56 – Accidentally Unfiltered: the shared bathroom, the pants-down tradition and the fan who walked in7:45 – Why he didn't start singing until 17 (no smartphone and a plan to be an architect)13:40 – His only ever celebrity crush, and why it runs in the family16:01 – Ask Uncut: "Sally, you are the problem"18:58 – Would Benson date a fan? Episode 662: Keeping the peace (standing up to female bullies)

Constantly trying to manage your partner's feelings does not lead to peace. Emotional externalizers turn relationships into imbalanced systems – and assertive boundaries are required to resist their sway. However, this might be difficult given the relationship models many men extrapolate as children. Ultimately, men must understand that keeping the peace does not mean catering to women's whims, but standing up to female bullies. Join my community: The Captains' Quarters. The "British, American and Nigerian Dreams" Episode

This week, it's just your favourite yappers, doing what they do best! But, before you get excited, we should warn you that this is not a tour recap; we are saving that for when we are back in the studio! This episode is one of those ones when we remind you (and ourselves) that we are graduates, starting off with a long rambling conversation on the dearth of imaginative problem-solving from global leaders (especially in the UK), what happens when finance bros and politics inadvertently conspire to break the talent pipeline and why reality shows get weird after the first two seasons. This week's dilemmas are interesting; a young lady is anxious about her father dying before walking her down the aisle, and another is disappointed in her partner's lack of generosity. It’s fun and full of "insights". We hope you enjoy this amazing episode, brought to you by our friends at Kuda and Busha! Busha is a SEC-licensed digital asset exchange where you can buy, sell, and send digital assets anywhere in the world, and also save in naira or dollars with up to 20% annual interest.  Download the Busha App and use the code ISWIS or visit busha.io to get started! Central Cee - In The Booth (feat. Plaqueboymax)

Central Cee’s unexpected link-up with Twitch streamer Plaqueboymax is the perfect mix of chaos and comedy, as the two attempt to create a track that’s equal parts unfinished and unforgettable. With lyrics like “When I step in the club, I got gyal lining up like a 20v1” and a freestyle that veers hilariously off track, the session showcases Central’s lighter side, fresh off the release of his album “Can’t Rush Greatness.” It’s a raw, unfiltered moment that reminds us even chart-topping artists have their unscripted, human moments—sometimes messy, often funny, and always entertaining. • Boer War: Siege of Ladysmith

    Boer War: Siege of Ladysmith

The Siege of Ladysmith was a key moment in the Boer War, also known as the South African War. In 1899, British troops and civilians were trapped in the besieged South African town for 118 days. Using a BBC archive recording, James Dalton, a British Army bandsman with the Gordon Highlanders, recalls shelling, hunger, disease and the dramatic relief of Ladysmith. Produced by Helen Ledwick in collaboration with BBC Archives. Witness History is a short BBC World Service podcast about history that takes you inside big moments from the past through first-hand testimony and archive. Each weekday, in around nine minutes, we revisit one moment that helped shape the world and hear it through the voice of someone who was there. Scientists, artists, campaigners, soldiers, leaders and everyday people tell their true stories. When you subscribe to Witness History, you’ll be taken inside turning points in world affairs from West Africa’s fight back against Boko Haram in 2015 to the behind-closed-doors talks that led to the US-Cuba “thaw” and the surprise announcement of restored relations. You’ll discover what it was like to experience disasters and how people recovered from them, including the Tabasco floods in Mexico, Portugal's worst train disaster, and the huge clean-up after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. You’ll explore culture and ideas too: Sweden’s Expedition Robinson, often credited as the first modern reality TV game show; the friendship between The Beatles’ George Harrison and Indian sitarist Ravi Shankar; and the night a tiger attack brought Las Vegas superstars Siegfried and Roy’s show to a sudden end. And if you’re curious about inventions, we’ll tell you how air fryers, BlackBerry, YouTube, Alexa, GPS, superglue, the shopping cart (shopping trolley) and bubble tea were created. If you’re new to Witness History, the appeal is simple: real voices, one strong true story, and a fresh way to understand today through events from history – all in the time it takes to enjoy a cup of tea or a walk around the block. Join millions of BBC World Service podcast listeners around the globe and enjoy the insight, context and detail Witness History will bring you. (Photo: Siege of Ladysmith, South Africa, Boer War.
