  • Can Trump’s $400 million save Republicans at the midterms?

Can Trump’s $400 million save Republicans at the midterms?

With early voting already underway across several states in America, Republicans have just two weeks to land their closing arguments. The US president says he will be spending over $400 million on Republican candidates by election day, but what is the strategy and will the money be enough to turn around low poll ratings in key states? In this episode, Justin and Anthony look at what early voting numbers can and can’t tell us about turnout and enthusiasm, and what’s going on behind the scenes within the Republican party. Trump has been holding rallies in states he won comfortably in 2024. One of them is Kansas, which hasn’t elected a Democrat to the Senate in almost a century. Now Republicans are fighting to hold the seat. Trump says he has spent, or will spend, more than $400 million by Election Day. His super PAC is also running a wave of Facebook and Instagram ads urging Republicans to vote early. How much difference can that money make? Plus, the controversial attack ad in Ohio’s race for governor featuring Democrat Amy Acton’s estranged mother, made by the campaign of her Republican rival, Vivek Ramaswamy. Do personal attacks like this work? US Election Unspun: Sign up for Anthony’s BBC newsletter: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-68093155 - now twice weekly for the midterms! • Africa Is Growing, But Is It Getting Richer?

Africa Is Growing, But Is It Getting Richer?

Africa is projected to grow by 4.6% in 2026, potentially outpacing China for the first time in decades. But faster GDP growth does not necessarily translate into rising living standards. Resource-dependent economies, persistent extreme poverty and rapid population growth continue to limit the gains ordinary Africans see from economic expansion. Industrialization presents another challenge as Chinese manufacturers dominate global production and African countries remain heavily dependent on commodity exports. Building regional markets, processing critical minerals locally and leveraging Chinese investment could help diversify African economies. The challenge is creating enough productive jobs for millions of young people entering the workforce while navigating an increasingly polarized global order. Jakkie Cilliers, head of the Africa Futures and Innovation Program at the Institute for Security Studies, joins us to discuss Africa's path to prosperity and how African countries can balance economic development, political stability and democracy. • The Billion Dollar Shack

    Season 3, Episode 1

    The Billion Dollar Shack

We all know that offshore areas of financial secrecy exist. In this episode, we're going to take a look at the origin story of one of them. It's a story that will make you question the caricature you probably have in your head about why shadowy offshore economies develop. And it's a story that involves, quite improbably, seabirds that made people rich, a failed musical about Leonardo Da Vinci….and a shack worth a billion dollars.   You may not have heard of it, but you can rest assured that terrorists, Russian mobsters, and rich oligarchs trying to set up their own banks know its name. This is a tale of greed, corruption, environmental destruction, and how – and why – the Davids of the globe can become Goliaths of illicit finance.   This episode features interviews with Jack Hitt, an award-winning journalist; Selena Shannon, a former journalist and a senior producer at Audiocraft; and Lisa Hollander, a former actress who starred in a doomed musical about Leonardo Da Vinci's love life, funded by seagull droppings on a little island in the Pacific that you've probably never heard of.   To read Jack's New York Times reporting about Nauru from 1999, click here. https://www.nytimes.com/2000/12/10/magazine/the-billion-dollar-shack.html   And for a review of the Leonardo Da Vinci musical published in 1993, go to this link: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/fertiliser-island-scents-musical-success-first-night-leonardo-1489451.html   Pre order Brian's book - https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Corruptible/Brian-Klaas/9781982154097    Support the show on Patreon at Patreon.com/powercorrupts

Brand: Day 9 - “He really hurt me”

“He really hurt me.” A warning this podcast contains strong language and graphic descriptions of alleged rape and sexual assault. The jury hears from friends and family of Complainant Five, who describe what she told them following an alleged anal rape at Russell Brand's home. Witnesses recall her distress, concerns about her health and conversations about the events that night. The defence also questions her former boyfriend over differences between his police statement and his evidence in court. Meanwhile, the court hears a 999 call made by Complainant Two. Russell Brand faces three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault relating to six women. He denies the allegations and has pleaded not guilty to all charges. Anoushka Mutanda-Dougherty takes us through the evidence, the defence's challenges and what the jury heard on day nine of the trial. Follow Fame Under Fire: Russell Brand on Trial for daily coverage from Southwark Crown Court, bringing you daily despatches of what the jury hears as the trial unfolds.
