    Is there time on Mars?

The first ever spacecraft to bring Martian samples back to Earth has launched from Japan. However, before the spacecraft returns from Phobos in 2031 there are many complex challenges that lie ahead, leaving an anxious 5 year wait for the scientists involved. To help us understand just how ambitious a feat of engineering the Mars Moons eXploration mission is Tom Whipple is joined by Naomi Murdoch, research director at ISAE-SUPAERO. What is it like to carry out scientific research when your work might lead to you being publicly cancelled or reviled? For the next few weeks, we are going to be hearing from finalists of Sense about Science’s John Maddox Prize, this week neuropsychologist Professor Sallie Baxendale discusses what it is like to continue their scientific endeavours despite being met with hostility. Plus managing editor of New Scientist Penny Sarchet brings Tom a round-up of the science news you might have missed. Produced in partnership with The Open University. Do You Have Trouble Sleeping?

Millions of us move through our days without getting enough sleep. We know that sleep deprivation can affect our physical health and our mood. But sleep researcher Chris Barnes says a chronic lack of good sleep can also affect how we make decisions and even what we value. He joins us to explore the forces that keep us from getting the rest we need, and offers practical strategies for getting better sleep. Later, psychologist Rachel Zoffness returns to answer your questions about the experience of pain, in our latest installment of "Your Questions Answered."  Is your parenting style preventing your child from thriving? We explore this question — and share five practical parenting strategies we've featured on Hidden Brain — in our latest YouTube video. Check it out here, and share your parenting strategies with us in the comments!  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. When Antarctica Was a Jungle 🌿❄️ | The Lost Green World of the Frozen Continent | Boring History for Sleep

Antarctica is now one of the coldest and most inhospitable places on Earth, covered by enormous sheets of ice. But millions of years ago, the frozen continent looked completely different. Fossils reveal a distant Antarctica where forests grew, plants flourished, and a very different climate allowed life to thrive near the South Pole. Tonight, we travel deep into Antarctica’s ancient past to discover how a continent now buried beneath ice could once have been green and forested. From prehistoric landscapes and changing climates to the remarkable fossils that reveal this forgotten world, this is a journey into one of Earth’s most surprising transformations. Boring History for Sleep — Soft stories about ancient worlds, lost landscapes, and the hidden history of our planet.

    Yawn Chorus

We often associate yawning with being tired or bored - but this week's episode explores whether it could be a clever way to cool down our brains? Hannah and Dara discover humans aren't the only species that yawn. From cats to chimpanzees and even fish, plenty of other vertebrates engage in this ancient behaviour which scientists believe evolved hundreds of millions of years ago. And it doesn't always happen as a spontaneous reflex to feeling tired but can also be triggered by watching other people do it. How Your Brain Cleans Itself - And What Happens When It Goes Wrong

Episode 406 The glymphatic system is the brain’s waste disposal system - responsible for clearing out harmful toxins that build up during the day. Now a new mouse study has connected reduced glyphatic flow to Alzheimer’s disease. And because this glymphatic system cleans the brain during sleep, it’s thought poor sleep may contribute to this reduction in brain function. Rowan Hooper and Penny Sarchet are joined by science writer Michael Marshall, who explains the study in detail, what we know about the effects in humans and the steps we can take to improve our own glymphatic flow. Making Waves

What happens when you give water a really good shake? You might expect splashing, spilling and general aquatic chaos - but under exactly the right conditions, something much stranger can happen... In this episode, Hannah Fry and Dara Ó Briain dive into the world of 'Faraday waves': amazing geometric patterns that, in certain circumstances, will appear on the surface of a vibrating liquid. They discover how the renowned physicist Michael Faraday accidentally discovered this remarkable phenomenon in the 19th Century; debate whether they could ever occur in a swimming pool; and find out what on earth alligators have to do with it. Along the way, the pair encounter eerie ‘square’ seas and learn about new ways satellites are helping us to understand the ocean’s wildest waves! If you have an everyday mystery for the team to investigate, contact them on curiouscases@bbc.co.uk.
