JESS MEGAN • surviving grief, addiction and social media #657

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by model, activist and general whirlwind of greatness JESS MEGAN! A deluxe edition of the podcast this week as Pip catches up with Jess, which as you will bear witness to, is no average catch up. While they worked together on the 'Dark Summer' Speech Development merch shoot back in 2016, which seems like mere months ago, that was an entire decade ago it turns out. And as with life in general, it also turns out that an almost insurmountable itinerary can intervene. In Jess's case, without treading on any of what you're about to hear, there's been an immense amount of grief, varying degrees of addiction, depression, and in case you need any sensitivity warnings, there is frank discussion of suicide - so please know that before you begin this episode. Of course, among the heavier elements of the conversation, a huge amount of light enters - Jess and Pip are lovely people and you're in safe hands, as hopefully you'll feel aware of by now. There's a lovely balance of the fun and the far more serious, including a lot of fascinating chat regarding social media and the like. But importantly, even if this situation doesn't mirror one of your own, there will likely be familiar moments or perhaps some which might be of help for others going through it. However you meet it, you'll emerge at the end in a different spot, and hopefully have found a glorious new friend in the bargain. Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by film-maker and director CORIN HARDY! Corin's new film 'Whistle' aptly drops on Friday 13th, which will surely be on the radar of the horror heads among you but if not, it might form part of your forthcoming movie schedule after listening to this one... Corin's served many years in the game, from time spent in set design and then onto stop motion, which led onto over 50 music videos which further led to working in a more cinematic capacity. It's been a hugely creative path, all underpinned by music which also forms a huge link in the chain (as you'll hear from the mutual interest in Operation Ivy and Rancid), and as with all Distraction Pieces the chat reins are loosened and conversation wanders into all sorts of awesome ground. Crucially though - you'll hear a ton about Whistle (without hearing the whistle itself - thankfully? - which is present throughout the chat), and the process of bringing it to the screen. ENJOY! Original writeup below: This is the mirror side of a two podcast deal the two of them struck up, where Pip appeared on her ‘Happy Place’ podcast, so as you’ll witness, the driver is often interchangeable, but it’s all perfect as they get on just grand. Maybe it’s because they were born a month apart and have the same cultural touchstones - WHO KNOWS! Whatever the case, it’s a breeze of a podcast which touches on so much including a sentence which features Hanson and Led Zeppelin in the same breath (in fact I think it could be called an “Mmm Bop-cast” but that’s of no consequence), her intro into different kinds of music, being mates with Sarah Cawood and how she eventually got into gig going through her, Coldplay haters, the power of music shared on a mass scale, cathartic crying sessions, early days of her presenting on TV and growing up in front of the camera, presenting the Disney Club, still being treated as a kid in adult life, the old fashioned kid poop story which serves as a grounding device, how being a cool parent isn’t possible, her book ‘Happy’, losing her sense of self in her 20’s and regaining it later, social media, podcast therapy, changing one’s self in the midst of crisis and her work with CoppaFeel. Episode #13 (Part One) - Brett Goldstein - Top 5 Worst/Weirdest Comedy Gigs

Brett Goldstein is one of the UK's best comics. Whether that be in stand up, acting or screenwriting for films he gets off his arse to make happen himself (Superbob). He's a bloody wealth of talent, annoyingly handsome, and also has the sort of soul you wish you had. The boys think he's a c**t tho. OK OK they don't. And over the course of hearing about Brett's strange experiences in the world of stand up, which are at points terrifying yet admirable, we're pretty sure you will love him too. Thats if you haven't already figured that out for yourself after watching him in Derek, Hoff The Record, that rap video with Brian Gittins the boys endlessly quote.....blah blah blah yes we get it he's talented. "I'm a FAN!" proclaims Benicio at various points in this lovely catch up with Pip, and it's so heartening to hear. Not that anyone ever expected him to be anything less than awesome, but this is actually quite a rare appearance from someone evidently beloved by those involved in cinema and those who view the films alike. While a quick Google search will bring up a bunch of films he's been in and you wlll love, you could just do an old fashioned analogue mind search and come up with something equally quick, as everyone will have one. BDT is in town and on the promo trail for the new Wes Anderson joint 'The Phoenician Scheme' in which he plays a major role, but during this episode you'll also hear about that road up to it including everything along the way. How he fit so much into such a short time here we'll never know, but rest assured you'll have a fine time enjoying and discovering his past lives along the actorial path. An in person episode for this follow up appearance, as the first time round was a Zoom-er in the heat of the lockdown times. So much has changed, for the band, for Joe himself, and the world on the whole. The last 5 years or so has been a cyclone of all sorts, and living through it while keeping a cool and level head is an insurmountable goal. Thankfully creation and art and music are not in short supply, no matter what some of the highers might want us to think, and Joe is proof of that. A wide ranging chat but with an anchor of sorts, which addresses many heavy hitting subjects including class, poverty, politics, socials, reading, mental health, touring, being in a band in general and of course, tinned fish. Jon is one of the OGs of production company Grain Media, the home of the wonderful Superbob (made by he and Brett), who has now gone on to focus on producing comedy and has been more solo since 2018 or so. Brett has always been doing comedy / writing / film, and since the huge success of Superbob has gone onto find the combination to the universe by way of Ted Lasso, Shrinking, All Of You, and indeed the (some might say) perfectly edited podcast Films To Be Buried With.
