Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by the fabulous actors HERO FIENNES TIFFIN & DONAL FINN! What with Young Sherlock premiering on Prime TODAY (at time of publishing, that is) - or for those listening later - March 4th, what better pairing than Sherlock Holmes and James Moriarty (and our man Scroobius Pip who also stars in the show!). Guy Ritchie directed it, and it sounded like a very cool and very unique environment to be a part of... We catch Hero and Donal at the very start of the press run, but already they have their off-screen chemistry down to science as they let us all in on the process, which is one that embraces spontaneity while being fully prepared. Along with the blend of loose / tight, we also hear about the musicality of the script which includes meticulous cadence, having room to present ideas and creative input on set, the importance of careful scheduling and also how to portray the Mind Palace. A meeting which is also a reunificiation, as Pip and Harry go back a good many years in the scene. Admittedly their time has been separated over the years, but that's the beauty of the scheduled recording! An excuse to leap back in. As you'll hear, while Harry has a flag planted in poetry, his world merges perfectly with comedy and humour as well as music, which lends his style to a huge amount of open doors out there for what he does. From the earlier days discovering Hip Hop via a cool teacher, to peppering raps with humour while not laughing at the artform, poems about maths and verging on being typecast as the 'maths poet' (though he does do the only poem with a pi-solo), silence and holding the room, developing technique the hard way by working rooms, Bestival, all the way up to daily poem writing through the first 100 days of a newborn. TOMO CAMPBELL • Live @ Harry Styles' Meltdown (Southbank Centre, London) #679

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined live on stage at the Harry Styles-curated Meltdown Festival by incredible artist TOMO CAMPBELL! To quote London's Cob Gallery, "[Tomo's] abstracted depictions of 'traditional' subjects such as hunting, parades and explorers are, as he puts it, 'never quite solid or whole', yet they exude an extraordinarily rich sense of vision". Now that's just so you know at least a little about Tomo if you're not familiar! After the chat with Pip live on stage you will likely be very inspired to pick up on where the chat leaves off and have a look at his work online (or in person if you're nearby). The conversation itself is fabulous, and features a huge amount to leave you well acquainted with Tomo, including art and class, education, inspiration, the slow creep from Houndslow to London, the choice between football and art, mood iterations (that's your album title right there), arbitrary pricing, ballet coincidences, power in ambiguity and art in application to music. Lovely stuff all in all - BUT - the questions at the end were relatively unsalvageable, so while you won't be able to make them out that well, hopefully the responses will allow for context. Apologies you're left to pick up the slack on those but they weren't available in the recordings so this was the best that could be done. See how you get on there anyway! Enjoy! Maybe it’s because they were born a month apart and have the same cultural touchstones - WHO KNOWS! Whatever the case, it’s a breeze of a podcast which touches on so much including a sentence which features Hanson and Led Zeppelin in the same breath (in fact I think it could be called an “Mmm Bop-cast” but that’s of no consequence), her intro into different kinds of music, being mates with Sarah Cawood and how she eventually got into gig going through her, Coldplay haters, the power of music shared on a mass scale, cathartic crying sessions, early days of her presenting on TV and growing up in front of the camera, presenting the Disney Club, still being treated as a kid in adult life, the old fashioned kid poop story which serves as a grounding device, how being a cool parent isn’t possible, her book ‘Happy’, losing her sense of self in her 20’s and regaining it later, social media, podcast therapy, changing one’s self in the midst of crisis and her work with CoppaFeel. But of course, SO much more. Lovely stuff from start to end. ENJOY! Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 306 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! WELCOME TO 2020 OFFICIALLY! You were cordially welcomed of course on New Year’s Day, but this feels like the first kind of ‘official’ episode of the decade. We all at Distraction Pieces Heights wish you nothing but the very best for the year ahead. Now let’s get it off to a proper start with the first guest of the year - it’s the uniquely great KARL PILKINGTON! While some see Karl as the grumpy one of the original podcast trio consisting of him, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, as you will hear in this podcast right here - it wasn’t necessarily grumpiness. Nor was it disinterest. Karl was looking through the world through a different prism, and certainly a prism of which we should all have a go at experiencing. It’s really nice hearing him get around ideas at leisure and with Pip (and us) as a sounding board, and definitely a really cool way of sharing the worldview of one of the more fascinating characters in the cast of podcasts, series and media in general. The two get into it all, from the origins of podcasting (kind of beginning with the Gervais one of course), to his thoughts on the promo run, to confidence, last minute tinkering, being a fan of real life and the fine line between that and comedy, ponderings on having children, the XFM days, being rubbed the wrong way by Ricky, his genuine curiosity, working on Derek, people being over familiar and a charming spider story to round it off.
