I Had It All and Then I Didn't: Dr. Susan Miele on Identity, Menopause, and Beginning Again

I LOVE hearing from you! Drop me a text! 💬 What happens when everything you built your identity around disappears in less than a year? Dr. Susan Miele was a Chief People Officer at a Fortune 500 company. She reached the C suite before 40, which had been her goal since she was a teenager. Her career was not just what she did. It was who she was. Then at 42, undiagnosed perimenopause began dismantling everything. Her performance. Her marriage. Her sense of self. She resigned without a plan, downsized her life, and then watched her new home burn to the ground twelve days after moving in. In less than twelve months she lost her career, her health, and her home. What followed was not a reinvention. It was a pause. And that pause became the foundation for her book, Paused: Redefining Identity When Our Story No Longer Holds Us. In this conversation we get into the story she wrote for herself at fourteen and lived into for decades, what perimenopause really looks like when it does not look like what anyone told you to expect, why she spent seven years trying to get back to who she was before she realized there was no going back, the three questions that anchor identity, who am I, how did I get here, and where am I going, what it means to try on possible selves like clothes in a dressing room, and why the struggle is the path. This episode also touches on menopause in the workplace and why less than twenty percent of US companies currently offer any menopausal benefits, even as fifty percent of their workforce will experience it. If you have ever defined yourself by what you do and wondered who you would be without it, this conversation is for you. What We Try to Possess Possesses Us.

I LOVE hearing from you! Drop me a text! 💬 There is a grand piano in your life that you keep trying to carry to the dining room. Maybe it is a career you walked away from but still dream about. Maybe it is clothes hanging in your closet from a chapter that is already closed. Maybe it is a story about who you are that you wrote a long time ago and have not been able to put down. In this episode we get into Aparigraha, the fifth and final Yama from the ancient yogic tradition, and what non attachment actually looks like in real life. Drawing on Deborah Adele's book The Yamas and Niyamas, we explore the difference between loving something fully and clinging to it, why letting go feels like being suspended in midair on a trapeze, and what a teenager with no plans for packing taught one of the wisest women I know about freedom. Plus a brief tease of next week's guest, who held on to a story she created at age fourteen for decades, and what it cost her. If you have ever thought you let go of something only to find it still showing up in your dreams, this one is for you. Walking the Camino: What is it and why is everyone doing it? (with Karen Richter)

I LOVE hearing from you! Drop me a text! 💬 Have you been hearing about the Camino de Santiago and wondering what it actually is and why so many people seem drawn to walk it? Karen Richter of Confident by Nature walked the most popular route across northern Spain. Six weeks. Roughly 500 miles. Almost no reservations. Everything on her back. Most of it alone. What she came home with was not what she expected. In this conversation we get into what the Camino actually is, what drew Karen there, and what happens to a person when they spend six weeks putting one foot in front of the other with nowhere to be and no one who knows them. Non Excess: How to Stop Burning Your Energy on Things That Do Not Make You Come Alive

I LOVE hearing from you! Drop me a text! 💬 I am an Olympic level overthinker. If there were a medal for it I would have swept the podium by now. This Fourth of July I applied that skill to a single rib. Seven year vegetarian streak on the line. Barbecue sauce involved. The rib never got eaten. But it did teach me something about where my energy actually goes and why it matters. Today we are talking about Brahmacharya, the fourth Yama in the ancient yogic tradition, and what non excess actually looks like in everyday life. Not just with food. With your time, your mental energy, your busyness, and the decisions you have been running laps around for no good reason. Drawing on Deborah Adele's book The Yamas and Niyamas and a quote from Howard Thurman, this episode is an invitation to stop spending your energy on things that do not make you come alive so you actually have enough left for the things that do. You Do Not Have to Choose: Kim Waller on Having the Career and the Life

I LOVE hearing from you! Drop me a text! 💬 What if you never had to choose between the career you built and the life you actually want? Kim Waller spent more than three decades at the highest levels of corporate America, holding senior leadership roles at Aon, Willis Towers Watson, and Korn Ferry, helping organizations navigate transformation, inclusion, and culture change. And somewhere in the middle of all of that, she also built a lake house she calls the House of Healing, deepened a yoga practice that has sustained her through divorce, career pivots, and personal reinvention, and became a yoga teacher whose classes fill up every single week. In this conversation we get into what it really means to own your power, why self care is not a luxury but a leadership strategy, the role yoga and mindfulness played in keeping Kim grounded through decades of high pressure leadership, her thoughts on inclusion and why diversity drives high performance, what retirement actually looks like when you have been quietly building a full life all along, and why the most important thing you can do is trust that you have what you need. This is one of those conversations that makes you want to rethink how you have been spending your energy. Four Ways You Are Stealing Your Own Peace Without Knowing It

I LOVE hearing from you! Drop me a text! 💬 I have a story I tell sometimes that gets the same reaction every single time. People ask me if I am crazy. It involves a $75 shirt, a register total that did not add up, and a decision that, looking back, taught me more about honesty than almost anything else in my life. Asteya, the third Yama in the Yoga Sutras, is what got me thinking about that story and it completely changed how I define stealing. Turns out there are four different ways we steal without realizing it, and most of them have nothing to do with a cash register. This episode gets into all four, drawing on Deborah Adele's book The Yamas and Niyamas, including the one that might be stealing your own peace right now. Want More? Real Girls Guide to Midlife: Author Angela Burk on Rewriting the Rules After 50

I LOVE hearing from you! Drop me a text! 💬 Angela Burk spent years being the good girl. The rule follower. The one who showed up exactly the way everyone expected. Then her forties hit and everything she thought she knew got rewritten all at once. A difficult divorce. A career leap into a pre-IPO startup with no safety net. Menopause she did not see coming until she was already in it. And somewhere in the middle of all of it, falling for a man who lives in Australia while she lives in California. Angela is the founder of Real Girls Guide to Midlife and author of the book by the same name. In this conversation she opens up about the rulebook she spent decades following without ever questioning where it came from, the moment she realized the best parts of herself had gone missing, and what it took to burn that rulebook down and build a version of her life that actually belongs to her. We get into self possession, the stories we let define us at work and at home, why no is a complete sentence, and the simple practice of saying out loud what you need even when no one else is listening. Angela also shares how her sons are responding to the woman she has become and why she has almost no regrets about any of it. Plus Angela is giving away three copies of her book to three lucky listeners. Details on how to enter are in this episode. If you are in the middle of your own midlife rewrite, or you think you might be circling one, this conversation is for you. Stop Editing Yourself

I LOVE hearing from you! Drop me a text! 💬 Are you a good blender? Not the kitchen kind. The kind where you walk into a room and immediately start editing yourself down to something safer, smaller, and easier for everyone else to digest. In this episode we get into Satya, the second of the ancient yogic principles called the Yamas, and what truthfulness actually means when you apply it to yourself. Spoiler: it has nothing to do with being brutally honest with other people and everything to do with stopping the performance you have been giving your whole life. Plus what Human Design revealed about why some of us were never built to blend in and what happens when you finally stop trying. Want More?
