Connie Valens: Remembering Her Bro Ritchie Valens | Three Stars Tribute | Woods Pet of the Week | Up+Adam

Sponsored by The Mountain Air | Sponsored by Benny’s Pizza | SLOFreeParking Connie Valens joins Adam Montiel for a deeply personal conversation about her brother, Ritchie Valens, and the life behind one of rock and roll’s most enduring legends. Connie talks about the Ritchie the world never got to know, the brother she remembers as her caregiver and her heart, and what it has meant to spend a lifetime sharing someone she loved so privately with millions of fans. She opens up about the family’s grief after Ritchie’s death, how the making of La Bamba forced them to revisit memories they had buried for years, and why she describes that period as “finding him again.” She also shares what it was like to see Ritchie honored in bronze at the Surf Ballroom, hear his music carried forward by new voices, and experience her brother Mario as part of that continuing musical legacy. The conversation also looks at Three Stars Tribute, the new Legacy Collection honoring Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly, and The Big Bopper. Led by Pat Boone, the project features 31 all-new recordings and performances from artists including Los Lobos, Frankie Avalon, Sha Na Na, Chris Montez, Marshall Crenshaw, Mario R. Valens, and more. The collection is available in a deluxe 2-LP 180-gram vinyl edition and a 2-CD set, with additional historical material including On A Cold Road to Clear Lake by Corey Long and a foreword from Connie, Irma, and Mario R. Valens. At its heart, this episode is about more than music history. It is about memory, family, grief, and the strange, beautiful way music can keep someone present long after they are gone. • Learn more about Three Stars Tribute: Gold Label Artists • Explore the 2-CD Legacy Collection: MVD Shop ******** *PORTABIDET: UP+ADAM IS AN OFFICIAL AFFILIATE FOR PORTABIDET - USE THIS LINK FOR UP+ADAM LISTENERS TO LEARN MORE AND GET YOURS! Nigel Dick: The Director Behind “Wonderwall,” “Welcome to the Jungle” and “Oops!...I Did It Again” | Music Video Mischief | Up+Adam

Sponsored by The Mountain Air | Sponsored by Benny’s Pizza | SLOFreeParking Music video director Nigel Dick joins Adam Montiel on Up+Adam for a wildly entertaining trip through the era when music videos did more than promote songs. They helped define how entire generations remember them. And Nigel’s résumé is almost absurd when you stack it up. Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?,” Oasis’ “Wonderwall,” Cher’s “Believe,” Def Leppard’s “Rocket,” Celine Dion’s “Falling Into You,” Guns N’ Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle,” Nickelback’s “Photograph,” Ozzy Osbourne’s “Back on Earth,” Britney Spears’ “Oops!...I Did It Again,” and Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” That is just a slice of a career that spans more than 450 music videos, plus documentaries, feature films, commercials, and a front-row seat to the rise of MTV-era visual culture. His new memoir, Music Video Mischief: Ozzy to Britney, Oasis to Gn’R, McCartney to Cher: A Lifetime of Rock and Chaos, goes behind the camera for the stories, personalities, creative risks, disasters, lucky breaks, and strange moments that came with helping invent the language of the modern music video. In this conversation, Adam and Nigel get into what it was like directing some of the biggest artists on the planet, how a three-minute film can permanently change the way we hear a song, what happens when an artist hates the video, whether MTV’s disappearance changed the art form forever, and whether the music video actually died or simply escaped into YouTube, TikTok, reels, and whatever comes next. The book also reveals a much more human story underneath the fame, from Nigel’s early life and obsession with music to the work ethic and curiosity that kept him going across decades of cultural change. • Nigel Dick Official Website: nigeldick.com • Nigel Dick Music Video Archive: Watch his work • Music Video Mischief: Book details and purchase information • More on Nigel Dick’s career: Official bio ******** *PORTABIDET: UP+ADAM IS AN OFFICIAL AFFILIATE FOR PORTABIDET - USE THIS LINK FOR UP+ADAM LISTENERS TO LEARN MORE AND GET YOURS! How to Survive & Thrive in SLO CAL as a Local Singer Songwriter with Kenny Taylor

Sponsored by The Mountain Air | Sponsored by Benny’s Pizza | SLOFreeParking Kenny Taylor is back on Up+Adam with a lot more than a new batch of songs. His latest album, Imaginary Grace, is his first collection of original music in a decade, and it arrives after a stretch of major personal and creative change. Kenny talks with Adam about nearly three years of sobriety, getting out of the comfort zone of cover gigs, reconnecting with songwriting, and why this record became a reflection of growth, anger, perspective, and the person he is becoming as he approaches 40. The conversation also gets into the reality of being a working musician in SLO CAL, from playing wineries and private events to building a career that now stretches from Santa Barbara to Monterey. Kenny has a great way of describing it: he is "touring without having to tour," meeting visitors from around the world while making a living close to home. Along the way, Adam and Kenny get into reading a room, slipping original music into long live sets, the surprising economics of tip jars, looping, emo, pop music, Dave Matthews, NSYNC, and whether almost anyone can actually be taught to sing. And there is already another chapter beginning. Kenny has teamed up with fellow SLO CAL musician Josh Rosenbloom for a brand-new original project called Black Sheep Revival. The two first crossed paths years ago through local songwriting circles, but reconnecting through Adam's Jingle Jam turned a casual friendship into writing sessions, studio time, and a real band. Their first finished single, "Too Many People," gets an especially cool Up+Adam moment in this episode: Kenny brought the completed track into the studio before anyone had played it, giving Up+Adam the chance to be the first to put the finished record on the air. • Kenny Taylor: https://kennytaylormusic.com/ • Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kennytaylormusic • Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/3yeqj4IzU1WhAO722BrVhy?si=eOFEiVnLQ9u8rf9PtPALnQ&nd=1&dlsi=0684cfd966824f8c • YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/kennytaylormusic • Black Sheep Revival Instagram: Black Sheep Revival Instagram ******** *PORTABIDET: UP+ADAM IS AN OFFICIAL AFFILIATE FOR PORTABIDET - USE THIS LINK FOR UP+ADAM LISTENERS TO LEARN MORE AND GET YOURS! No Kids? Date Night Gets Wild At The Central Coast Zoo | Brew At The Zoo | Up+Adam

Sponsored by The Mountain Air | Sponsored by Benny’s Pizza | SLOFreeParking Terrie Banish joins Adam in the SLO CAL Studios to talk about one of Atascadero’s most entertaining nights of the year, Brew at the Zoo at the Central Coast Zoo. It is a 21-and-over evening built around more than 20 breweries, wineries, cider makers and other pouring partners, with food, live music, contests, and the rare opportunity to wander the zoo after hours with a tasting glass in hand. But the conversation goes well beyond what is being poured. Terrie takes Adam inside the bigger story of the Central Coast Zoo, its rebrand, its role in Atascadero’s growth, and the serious conservation work happening behind the fun. They talk red pandas, lemurs, meerkats, marmosets, spider monkeys, radiated tortoises, and what it actually means to be an AZA-accredited zoo. Terrie also explains how animals come into accredited zoo programs, why conservation and responsible breeding matter, and why supporting an event like Brew at the Zoo helps fund education and wildlife conservation right here on the Central Coast. And because this is Up+Adam, there is plenty of room for the important questions too, including which animals are the most fun to watch, why a zoo is definitely not the place to go shopping for a pet monkey, and just how entertaining an adult hula-hoop contest might become after a few tastings. • Brew at the Zoo: Saturday, September 12, 5 to 8 PM • 21+ only • Advance tickets: $45 • Designated driver tickets: $15 • Day-of tickets, if available: $55 • Proceeds support zoo education and wildlife conservation Learn more and get tickets: Visit Atascadero: Brew at the Zoo Learn more about the animals, conservation work and upcoming events: Central Coast Zoo More from the City of Atascadero: City of Atascadero ******* *PORTABIDET: UP+ADAM IS AN OFFICIAL AFFILIATE FOR PORTABIDET - USE THIS LINK FOR UP+ADAM LISTENERS TO LEARN MORE AND GET YOURS! Welcome to Your Life: Tears for Fears’ Roland Orzabal Gets Candid on “Shout,” “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” & More | Up+Adam

Sponsored by The Mountain Air | Sponsored by Benny’s Pizza | SLOFreeParking Tears for Fears founding member Roland Orzabal joins Adam Montiel on Up+Adam for a conversation that goes far beyond the hits. His new memoir, Welcome to Your Life: Love, Death, and Tears for Fears, looks back on a life shaped by fame, friendship, grief, ambition, creativity, astrology, and the long road toward understanding yourself. In this interview, Roland talks about seeing himself as both the character and the author of his own life, the private pain that can sit beneath a sunny public disposition, and what reconciliation with longtime bandmate Curt Smith has taught him about perspective. Adam also takes Roland deep into two of Tears for Fears’ most enduring songs. Roland explains why “Shout” was the song that finally made him feel comfortable stepping out front, and how its roots in Arthur Janov’s primal scream philosophy connected with something deeply personal in him. On “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” Roland reflects on ambition, admits that he himself belongs inside the word “everybody,” and talks about the fascinating contrast between the song’s bright, liberating sound and the darker ideas underneath it. The conversation comes full circle with the phrase “Welcome to your life,” which Roland first wrote in his twenties and now sees as something much larger: an invitation for readers to better understand their own lives, not simply his. Welcome to Your Life is out now and explores Roland’s journey through the rise of Tears for Fears, his relationship with Curt Smith, personal loss, recovery, and his lifelong fascination with astrology. • Tears for Fears Official Website • Welcome to Your Life on Google Play Books • Tears for Fears Official YouTube • Instagram: @tearsforfearsmusic ******** *PORTABIDET: UP+ADAM IS AN OFFICIAL AFFILIATE FOR PORTABIDET - USE THIS LINK FOR UP+ADAM LISTENERS TO LEARN MORE AND GET YOURS! Emmy Winner Nancy Glass on Burden of Guilt, False Accusations and the Ethics of True Crime | Up+Adam

Sponsored by The Mountain Air | Sponsored by Benny’s Pizza | SLOFreeParking Emmy-winning investigative journalist and producer Nancy Glass joins Adam Montiel on Up+Adam to talk about Season 3 of Burden of Guilt, the iHeart true-crime series centered on Cindy, a mother whose life is torn apart after a devastating allegation involving her fiancé Kenny and her 9-year-old son. What follows is years of court battles, fractured relationships, and a fight over not just what happened, but whose version of the truth people are willing to believe. Adam and Nancy go beyond the mechanics of the case and into the much bigger questions underneath it. What happens when an accusation becomes an identity? Can someone win legally and still lose narratively? How do journalists investigate claims involving a child without causing further harm? Nancy also pulls back the curtain on the ethics of true-crime storytelling, including why she refuses to become what she calls a “video vampire,” simply taking someone’s worst experience for content and disappearing. It is a conversation about truth, manipulation, judgment, empathy, and the responsibility storytellers carry when real human lives are on the other side of the microphone. UB40’s Jimmy Brown on Why the Band Still Loves Each Other After Nearly 50 Years

Sponsored by The Mountain Air | Sponsored by Benny’s Pizza | SLOFreeParking UB40 founding drummer Jimmy Brown joins Adam Montiel for a wide-ranging conversation about nearly five decades of music, friendship, politics, and the strange art of knowing when not to play. Jimmy talks about why reggae drumming is harder than it looks, how slowing down can be more demanding than speeding up, and why that lesson applies far beyond music. He reflects on UB40’s working-class Birmingham beginnings, the band’s political roots, and how a group of friends who had barely been playing six months suddenly found themselves in the spotlight. He also opens up about “Red Red Wine,” why UB40 never knew it was originally a Neil Diamond song until they went to record it, and how one massive hit can sometimes overshadow the hundreds of songs that came before and after it. The conversation also gets into the multicultural Birmingham that shaped UB40’s sound and worldview, why Jimmy still sees the band as a genuine family, and what it means that after all these years they still actually like each other. And in one of the lighter moments, Adam asks the question anyone with a song this popular should be asked: has Jimmy ever crashed a wedding after hearing UB40 playing through the walls? UB40 is heading back across North America on The Unstoppable Tour, beginning September 18, 2026, with more new music on the way in 2027. The band is also preparing a new take on Shania Twain’s “You’re Still the One,” a song Jimmy says unexpectedly fits UB40’s own story after nearly five decades together. • UB40 official website: UB40.global • Tour dates and tickets: The Unstoppable Tour • Jimmy Brown on Instagram: @jimmyub40 • UB40 on Spotify: Listen on Spotify • UB40 on YouTube: Official UB40 YouTube channel ******** *PORTABIDET: UP+ADAM IS AN OFFICIAL AFFILIATE FOR PORTABIDET - USE THIS LINK FOR UP+ADAM LISTENERS TO LEARN MORE AND GET YOURS! Andrew Sewell: SLO Symphony, Pops by the Sea and His Final Bar | Up+Adam

Sponsored by The Mountain Air | Sponsored by Benny’s Pizza | SLOFreeParking Maestro Andrew Sewell is back Up+Adam, and this conversation arrives at one of those fascinating moments when celebration and transition are happening at exactly the same time. Andrew joins Adam ahead of Pops by the Sea: Symphony Remix, the SLO Symphony’s end-of-summer celebration at Avila Beach Golf Resort featuring local powerhouse horn band Brass Mash. They get into what happens when a full symphony collides with the music of The Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Cranberries and more, including some seriously clever mashups that turn the concert into a little bit of a live “name that tune.” Andrew also explains why a song like “A Whiter Shade of Pale” may have more classical DNA in it than you ever realized, and what it takes to make an outdoor symphony concert work when the ocean, weather, amplification and acoustic instruments all become part of the equation. But there is a much bigger conversation underneath the music. Andrew recently announced that he plans to step down as Music Director of the San Luis Obispo Symphony following the 2027-28 season, completing an 11-year tenure. He opens up about why he chose to give the organization two years to thoughtfully prepare for its next leader, how becoming a grandfather has shifted some of his priorities, and why loving the music does not necessarily mean holding onto the position forever. Adam and Andrew also talk about what San Luis Obispo has taught him, the extraordinary philanthropic spirit of the Central Coast, the 46 musicians he has hired during his tenure, and the importance of putting instruments into the hands of young people. Andrew traces some of that passion back to being eight years old and attending the symphony concert that made him want to learn every instrument in the orchestra. And then there is this little revelation: Andrew says actual conducting is only about five percent of what a Music Director does. The rest is programming, rehearsals, organizational leadership, development, community building and figuring out how to turn dozens of extraordinary individual musicians into one unified musical voice. Of course, Adam and Andrew also revisit their previous adventure together, when Maestro Sewell put a baton in Adam’s hand and attempted to teach him how to conduct. Somehow, both men survived. It is a conversation about music, leadership, community, knowing when to make room for what comes next, and why the SLO Symphony continues finding new ways to invite people into an art form they may not even realize they already love.
