Fighting MS One Pedal Stroke at a Time with Melinda Thrasher

Melinda started riding in Bike MS in 2014 with her corporate team as a way to get out and have fun. After her 3rd Bike MS ride in 2016, she found herself diagnosed with MS. Since then she has joined the committee to help give back to the community. In 2022 she was named the Most Inspirational Rider for the Bay to Bay ride. It was that recognition of how her struggle affected others that made her become dedicated to being an MS Ambassador and Activist. When not fighting for MS awareness, she is a full time Senior Project Manager at a software company who enjoys gardening, cooking, camping, the beach and throwing flaming axes.

Beautifully Evil Bikepacking with Jannine Fitzgerald, Jennifer Swartout & Diana Gibson

Beautifully Evil Bikepacking with Jannine Fitzgerald, Jennifer Swartout & Diana Gibson

Ozark Gravel Doom calls itself “A beautifully evil bikepacking event in the south.” With two distance options, 400 miles and 196 miles, this event doesn’t have podiums or prize money and is entirely self supported.
The 2024 edition took place this past weekend, with the fastest male finisher of the 400 mile “Doom” category finishing in 45 hours, 42 minutes, and the fastest woman coming in at 2 days, 4 hours and 15 minutes.
Today, we’re catching up with 3 incredible women who completed the Despair distance (196 miles) - Janine Fitzgerald, Diana Gibson, and Jennifer Swaartout. Tune in as we hear about their inspiration for riding this event, the challenges and triumphs, and why at 50, they feel stronger than ever.
Jannine Bio - Jannine Fitzgerald has dedicated over three decades to outdoor exploration and has been a prominent figure in the bicycle industry since 2002. She is best known for her pioneering spirit as the co-founder of Pedal Kids USA (formerly Buddy Pegs),and is particularly passionate about encouraging women to join her on rides, always ready to support and push them towards embracing challenging adventures. Her belief in the empowering nature of cycling and outdoor activities is encapsulated in her mantra, "it's easier than parenting," highlighting the simplicity she finds in these pursuits compared to the complexities of raising children:)
Jennifer Bio: Jennifer is the Associate Vice President for General Education at Northwest Arkansas Community College and has lived in NWA for 5 years. She’s always had a bike, but started taking cycling “seriously” around 20 years ago, riding mountain bikes and then adding other disciplines in along the way. She lives in Bella Vista with her terrier mix, Callie. She currently volunteers as a ride leader for Femmes Gravel and is an Amazeum board member.
Diana Bio: Diana is a mom with three kids (including twins) and a demanding full time job. Her favorite thing is an all-day or multi-day adventure in the mountains! She’s trying to figure out how to keep exploring and having fun while getting older and being a fully functioning adult.

Biking for Mental Health with Maggie and Marley

Biking for Mental Health with Maggie and Marley

I’ve long used cycling as a tool in my mental health toolbox, and as I’ve gotten more public with my mental health struggles and started talking about it on social media, it turns out i’m not alone.
My anecdotal experience is supported by a number of scientific studies that have come to a similar conclusion, namely that “Cycling for transportation may also have important mental health benefits. Some studies have demonstrated a decrease in depression symptoms,34,35 while others have demonstrated an overall increase in emotional well-being and happiness.36,37 (Marques A, Peralta M, Henriques-Neto D, Frasquilho D, Rubio Gouveira É, Gomez-Baya D.. Active commuting and depression symptoms in adults: a systematic review. Int J Environ Res Public Health 2020;17(3):1041. [PMC free article] [PubMed] [Google Scholar])
While I didn’t do enough research to dive into the findings between recreational cycling and mental health, I’m going to assume that there’s a link there too.
But what happens when you’re in a bigger body and your experience, fitness, or motive for riding is called into question? I recently had a reel go viral on Instagram, where I tongue-in-cheek present stereotypes about fat cyclists that are actually true. This reel hit a nerve, as I received over 2000 comments echoing my experience.

MidSouth Recap with 2024's DFL Beth McBride

MidSouth Recap with 2024's DFL Beth McBride

MidSouth Gravel is an iconic gravel event in Stillwater, Oklahoma that has become well known for their efforts towards inclusion and supporting every last rider with a raging DFL party. Today we get a chance to interview Beth McBride, 2024’s DFL (Dead Effing Last) Rider.
This was extra special for All Bodies on Bikes, as Beth was a member of our 2023 SBT GRVL team. Listen in for Beth’s epic adventure and how she persevered through a 16 hour gravel ride.
Beth lives in Lake Mills, WI - a small town near Madison, WI. She discovered the joy of cycling late in life - and now finds every opportunity she can to ride bikes and to inspire folks who never thought they could be a cyclist to just get on a bike and ride.

BINGEING!

Love this podcast and how they demystify so much about cycling for those of us who feel like we don’t fit in with the elite white make cyclist cohort. I have been listening to the podcasts back to back while I row indoors for the winter and I’ll be sad when I’m caught up. Thank you Maggie and Marley!!!

Loving so far ♥️🚲♥️

I’m enjoying this podcast very much. I can’t wait to see where it goes! It’s a fun way to stay connected to the cycling community and I learn new things from every single episode. The sensitivity and compassion displayed by the hosts toward all people is much appreciated.

Love The Show!

This has been a great podcast so far. Great discussion and banter with the hosts. Easy to follow and wonderful story telling.
I’d love to hear an interview/discussion about riding with auto immune disease or chronic illness. How people manage and what they do to maintain energy. Thanks!
