True Neurodiversity Affirming (with Cassie Leutenegger) - Ep81

Do you ask for help when you need it? How often do you collaborate with other practitioners? During today’s meal - I speak with a behavior analyst about the importance of being adaptable, advocating for yourself, connecting with families, and her favorite comfort meal. ~ Cassie Leutenegger, M.Ed, BCBA, TX-LBA Cassie Leutenegger is a behavior analyst, clinic director, educator, and professional curiosity collector who believes behavior analysis is much bigger than token boards and data sheets. With roots in special education and years of experience leading autism programs, she is passionate about helping clinicians build practices that are both evidence-based and deeply human. Cassie is the creator of Adventures in Behavior Academy, where she explores topics like supervision, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Relational Frame Theory (RFT), compassionate leadership, and the messy, meaningful realities of clinical work. She loves translating complex behavioral concepts into conversations that feel approachable, practical, and maybe even a little fun. When she’s not talking behavior science, you’ll probably find her designing CEUs, questioning long-held assumptions in the field, or convincing other behavior analysts that flexibility might just be one of our most important skills. ~ Follow Cassie! Being Seen (with Lauren Haley) - Ep78

Can fostering animals lead to better practitioners? Can reverting back to childhood preferences make for happier adults? During today’s meal - I speak with a behavior analyst business owner about walking the fine line between being autistic and also a BCBA who practices ABA, how she practices self care, and her favorite comfort snack. — Lauren Haley, BCBA, LBS, CTP My name is Lauren, and I am the owner and founder of Better Care Consulting. I have a background in psychology with an undergraduate degree from West Chester University, and a Master’s in Education with a concentration in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) from Temple University. I am a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, Certified Trauma Professional, and an Adjunct Professor at Temple University. Over the course of my career, I've gained experience working in a variety of settings, including homes, schools, clinics, communities, and residential facilities. I've worked for both large and small companies, including privately owned small businesses and private-equity backed organizations. Each experience has shaped my understanding of what truly matters in providing quality care. My clinical areas of focus include Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Acceptance and Commitment Training (ACT), caregiver consultation, organizational behavior management (OBM), and school systems/education consultation. What I’ve learned over the years is that meaningful care goes beyond helping my clients fit in. It’s about helping them thrive authentically in a world which was not designed with their needs in mind. Better Care Consulting was born from the realization that if I wanted to be part of the change I wished to see in this field, I needed to do something differently than what is currently being done. My goal is to offer care that empowers individuals to build a life that feels true to who they are, with the confidence to navigate challenges and advocate for themselves. I also love sharing the science of behavior analysis in ways that are approachable, practical, and fun. Whether through professional development or mentorship, I strive to make complex topics accessible and engaging. Ultimately, my mission is to help individuals live authentically, feel empowered, and thrive. — Follow Lauren! Find Your People (with Emily Wilson) - Ep77

Who are you outside of your job? What kinds of hobbies and interests do you engage in to maintain work life balance? During today’s meal - I speak with a behavior analyst about the realities of owning a business, finding your people, not volunteering your time to do unpaid labor, and I learned a new food local to southeastern Virginia. — Emily Wilson, MA, BCBA, LBA Emily stumbled into this field in 2012 and has been committed to the kind of self-improvement that translates to sustainable community support ever since. She was instrumental in the formation of the Virginia Association for Behavior Analysis regional Special Interest Groups, because there is no true substitute for face-to-face professional collaboration. Emily co-founded Blossom Behavioral Services in 2018 with a mission to apply the science of behavior to facilitate meaningful change that improves lives. All these years later, Emily continues to strive toward that goal by emphasizing individualized compassionate care with her client families.  In an effort to align values and practice, Emily has been intentional about her post certification training and experience. Her practice emphasizes a trauma-informed approach, relying on assent-based instruction. She began to dabble in Precision Teaching in 2019 and is now a dedicated charter. Emily also has a background in early childhood development, specifically ages 0-3. She has been supporting families of babies and toddlers exhibiting developmental delays since 2020. — Follow Emily! Get Weird (with Shelby Hancock) - Ep76

How often do you get silly with your clients? How often do you request help from your team? During today’s meal - I speak with a behavior analyst about her experiences in ABA, getting “weird” and playful with clients, her big move to Mexico, integrating into the community, and navigating chronic illness and pain. — Shelby Hancock, MA, BCBA, LBA Shelby is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst with over a decade of experience working in the field of ABA across multiple roles. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Parks, and Tourism with a concentration in Recreation Therapy from Radford University in Radford, VA in 2016 and her Master's Degree in Special Education with emphasis in ABA curriculum from Arizona State University in 2020. She earned her BCBA and LBA credentials in 2021, and has spent her career since then specializing in early intervention. Shelby has a passion for play-based interventions, and credits her unconventional background in rec therapy along with her many years riding horses and working as a camp counselor for her ability to "get weird" with kids in ways that allows them to be their most authentic selves. She began her career in ABA as a teacher's assistant at a well known CABAS (Certified Applied Behavior Analysis School) program in Richmond, VA, where she called home for many years. Her professional interests include early intervention, building functional communication with her young clients, and sharing the magic that comes along with getting into a child's world with their grown-ups as they navigate the trenches of early parenthood through parent training. Shelby currently resides in Merida, México with her husband and their three pets, where she is currently focusing on perfecting her Spanish and making a new city feel like home. In the future, she hopes to build a network in her area to find avenues to support families and help the community better understand autism and the needs of autistic people. In her free time, she enjoys making art, gardening, yoga, reading, and exploring local cuisine. — Follow Shelby!
