Austin Nola | One Hard Truth Can Change the Trajectory of Your Life
How many times have you heard, “The truth hurts”?
It does hurt…
But it also helps.
Case in point: San Diego Padres catcher, Austin Nola.
Austin was dealt the hard truth not too long ago, but instead of balling up in a corner, he decided to ball out…in a completely different position.
On today’s episode of the Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™ show, I sit down with Austin and unpack one of the greatest stories of perseverance in sports.
Austin was seeing the writing on the wall with his professional baseball career, but he decided to pick up the eraser and make a major shift. Next thing you know, he was coming up clutch in the 2022 MLB Playoffs.
In this latest episode, Austin and I talk about what he…
Credits for being able to come up clutch in the 2022 MLB Playoffs
Did after getting feedback that he wasn’t good enough to live out his dream to be a MLB Shortstop
Does to perfect his craft as a husband, father, and athlete while constantly being on the road
…and so much more.
If you want to learn from one the best when it comes to overcoming failure and adversity, then lock in to today’s episode.
[00:01 - 07:55] Introducing Austin to the show
Austin’s most embarrassing moment
Austin’s background, story, and professional journey
[07:56 - 17:16] What Austin credits for being able to come up clutch in the 2022 MLB Playoffs
Context: 2022 Playoffs, he’s up with the bases loaded
Austin’s mindset: “I’m gonna get a hit right here”
Austin saw the situation, recognized it, and knew that he prepared for it every single day. When he got to the situation, he just stuck with his plan
When Austin got to two strikes, he reminded himself that he’s been there before, he knew he prepared for it, and believed he could get that hit
He practiced being down in the count with two strikes and forced himself to like being in this tough situation
Practice for clutch moments, so when you get in them, you’re not surprised.
Austin was able to believe in himself in that moment because of how much he prepared being in that moment
[17:17 - 34:48] What Austin’s mindset was after getting feedback that he wasn’t good enough to live out his dream to be a MLB Shortstop
He told himself there might be another way to get what I want (i.e. catching)
Key mindset he adopted: if I just learn something every day that I have no clue about, that’s going to take me much farther than achieving a certain outcome (i.e. play in the Big Leagues)
Austin wasn’t quitting. He was just shifting course.
Take the EMOTION out of it and come to understand the FACTS
Seek out someone you trust to give you the honest TRUTH
The key behind Austin’s mindset to “learning something every day”: CLARITY of self. Austin wanted to become something greater than a baseball player (he had a long-term perspective)
Where this came from: faith, reading a lot, and being around great people
Make simple decisions daily - that will help you have more joy on your journey
[34:49 - 47:17] What Austin does to perfect his craft as a husband, father, and athlete while constantly being on the road
Be present - put the Lord first
Helpful skill that Austin learned to stay present: stop the flow of what you want to say / do and then listen and repeat back what they said and sit with it
Clarifying my values DAILY - I start there and let the rest just happen
Reading the Bible
Pray
Keep things simple: complication is the devil.
[47:18 - 53:37] Wrapping Up
Austin’s BIG domino
How to connect with Austin

5 Minute Drill | Make the Shift from Time Lost to Time Left
Feeling stuck is not an acceleration issue. It’s an alignment issue.
This quote is loaded.
But it’s the truth. A HARD truth I had to swallow once I woke up to it.
So many times we think things aren’t moving fast enough in our careers and lives, but in reality, our pace is our pace because we’re thinking, believing, and making decisions that are misaligned with our identity, values, and purpose.
I’m telling you from firsthand experience - this is a hard truth to swallow, but as soon as you accept this paradigm shift, WATCH OUT!
It’s a jolt of clarity, energy, and HOPE.
In today’s 5 Minute Drill, we’re going to make a perspective shift. I’ve said it over and over again - there’s a reason the windshield of a car is bigger than the rearview mirror. I unpack that even further in today’s episode.
If you want to make the most of your time and be in alignment with your desired future, then make sure to lock in to today’s Drill.
LET’S GET IT!
[00:01 - 09:59] Opening Segment
J.R. gives some context and shares a story about recovery and the science behind it
[10:00 - 12:12] What’s The Drill?
Schedule some introspective time to answer this question:
Based on who you are today and who you’re becoming in the future, what’s possible for your __________ (e.g. family, business, career, etc.), with the time you have left?

Wednesday Recap | Joe Blackburn
Sometimes the best answer for adversity is ACTION.
And many times that action means moving forward despite the uncertainty.
The alternative sucks.
You know, just sitting there replaying all the possible scenarios…
Focusing so much on your past problems instead of your future possibilities…
It’s a death grip.
In today’s episode of Coming Up Clutch™️, I summarize the Top 3 nuggets from Monday’s interview with financial expert and founder of the Lion’s Eye Mastermind, Joe Blackburn.
Joe unpacked the wisdom behind his clients overcoming their adversities and growing their businesses 3-7x.
Lock in to get the summary of my interview with Joe.

Joe Blackburn | Bridge the Gap from Standard Growth to Expansive Success
For years, I bought into the saying, “If you’re not growing, you’re dying.”
Don’t get me wrong - I still believe it.
But you can be growing personally or professionally and still be complacent.
What?
Yes.
Trust me, this was me for YEARS. I thought I was making progress and growing, only to find out I was thinking too small.
The bar I set for myself was too low…
So, of course, every book I finished or meditation I completed felt like I won the dang Super Bowl. But in reality, I wasn’t even scratching the surface of the dream God had for me or the progress he prepared for me to make.
On today’s episode of the Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™ show, I sit down with financial expert and founder of the Lion’s Eye Mastermind, Joe Blackburn.
Joe has made a career helping the world’s most successful people 3-7x their growth…in many cases, helping them go beyond anything they originally thought they could do.
In this latest episode, Joe and I talk about…
The big lesson that came out of Joe’s family navigating Joe’s wife’s battle with breast cancer
What helped Joe lead a team of over 200 financial advisors that earned $117 million in revenue and managed over $17 billion in assets.
How to bridge the gap from standard growth to expansive success
…and so much more.
If you want to grow and experience success at the pace and level that you’re capable of, then lock in to today’s episode.
[00:01 - 08:20] Introducing Joe to the show
Joe’s most embarrassing moment
Joe’s background, story, and professional journey
[08:21 - 17:46] Big lesson that came out of Joe’s family navigating Joe’s wife’s battle with breast cancer
There’s so much unknown in the world and so much out of our control, so FAITH must be front and center
Regarding leading his family, the mentality became, “I can’t be the victim when it’s not happening to me.”
The law of necessity kicked in - I couldn’t fold in the middle of this adversity. My family needed me.
Adversity isn’t easy, but it’s worse to sit around and worry about it.
[17:47 - 30:20] What helped Joe lead a team of over 200 financial advisors that earned $117 million in revenue and managed over $17 billion in assets.
Self-confidence
People don’t allow themselves to feel differently and struggle
Origin of Joe’s self confidence: at a young age, he would do little things that would pull him out of a comfort zone (e.g. pay a bill, open the door for a stranger, etc.)
If you want self-confidence, you have to have an awareness of other people, but not worry about what they think
Just DO something that’s a little out of the norm, then keep doing it
[30:21 - 44:12] How to bridge the gap from standard growth to expansive success
Have to know where you want to go, where you’re at today, and map out what it’s going to take to bridge the gap (i.e. have a vision)
Big keys: delegate and develop (i.e. who are you developing to do things that you shouldn’t?)
RE: building wealth, there’s a basic hygiene to it (e.g. saving in 401k, have an emergency fund, etc. - these are equivalent to taking a shower everyday)
We have to think about the possibilities of more success before we act
Big thing that gets in the way of success: distractions and lack of focus (everything sounds good)
Joe’s advice: build your “gusher” first (i.e. get laser focused on the ONE thing that brings you passion)
Decide what to do with your excess capital
[44:13 - 51:16] What you can’t miss when it comes to experiencing more wealth and less stress in today’s uncertain world
Get great at your craft / maximize what you’re great at first
Find a way to get excess capital doing things that compliment your craft, then make good decisions with it (i.e. decisions that allow you to live the life you -
5 Minute Drill | The Overlooked Necessity of Peak Performance
“But, J.R., I just have to get through this project, then I could…”
“I just need to finish this quarter, then I could…”
“I just need to get the starting spot, then I could…”
“…Sleep a little more…”
“…Take more breaks…”
“...Go on vacation.”
I’ve heard it all.
For some reason, we get how recovery works as athletes, but we forgot how it works as humans.
Bottom line, there’s no such thing as peak performance without recovery.
In today’s 5 Minute Drill, we’re going to get real about recovery. I’m going to show you how to make it the main course, not the leftovers…
If you want to be the person showing up with clarity, energy, and courage more often, then make sure to lock in to today’s Drill.
LET’S GET IT!
[00:01 - 20:50] Opening Segment
J.R. gives some context and shares a story about recovery and the science behind it
[20:51 - 25:55] What’s The Drill?
Pick ONE of the six non-negotiables, audit it in your life, then commit to focus on it for the next week. If you pick…
#1 (Protect your schedule). Look at your weekly schedule, where are you leaving it to chance? Where are there doors open to distraction and other people preventing you from recovering the way you need to? Identify the opportunity, then determine how you’re going to manage your schedule better.
#2 (Sleep hygiene). What practice can you do to up your sleep hygiene. Is it making your room darker at night? Is it turning down the temperature? Science tells us the ideal sleeping temperature is around 67 degrees. Or do you need to set a nighttime alarm?...meaning that when that alarm goes off, the electronics go off, work stops, and you’re starting to prepare for bed.
#3 (Active Recovery) . Are there opportunities to do things like an epsom salt baths, infrared saunas, massages, restorative yoga, breathwork, mindfulness, meditation?
#4 (Hydration/Nutrition). Do you need to ramp up your water intake? Typically on a base level, we need a ounce of water for every pound of body weight. Do you need to decrease your sugar intake or how your vegetables?
#5 (Yoga/Stretching/Tai Chi). Is there an opportunity to stretch more throughout the day? Or schedule yoga sessions to increase your flexibility?
#6 (Managing your emotions). Are there certain instances where you’re more impulsive…get more emotional? Maybe your commitment includes taking a 15 second pause to breathe when these things come up. Or going on a quick walk, or praying.

Wednesday Recap | David Aardsma
As an athlete, it was always a wake up call when you faced a superior opponent. If you were good enough, you’d hang. If you weren’t, you’d get exposed.
But when I got exposed, it showed me everything I needed to know to get better for the next tough opponent.
That was the point - play tough competition, put yourself out there…so you can see what you got, ESPECIALLY when the stakes were high.
How often are you putting your skills to the test?
I wish someone asked me that early on in my professional career…when I had to trade in the spikes for the suit. It was too easy to play it safe.
What I didn’t realize is in regards to my skills, SAFE means STAGNANT.
In today’s episode of Coming Up Clutch™️, I summarize the Top 3 nuggets from Monday’s interview with former 10-year MLB veteran, entrepreneur, and radio personality, David Aardsma.
David got very real about the ups and downs on-and-off the field and what changes he needed to make after his skills and roles were exposed.
Lock in to get the summary of my interview with David.

#2: The key lessons David learned after experiencing both great success and failure at the highest level of baseball
#3: What David did when he realized he didn’t have his priorities straight between his family and career
