The SUPERBOY TV Mixtapes Vol. III — "The Best Lex Luthor Most People Have Never Heard Of"

Host Anthony Desiato presents the third in a quartet of "mixtape"-style discussions digging into the 1988-1992 SUPERBOY television series starring John Newton (Season 1) and Gerard Christopher (Seasons 2-4).
In Vol. III, Anthony and guest Michael Bailey (From Crisis to Crisis - The Married Years (A Superman and Lois Podcast)) discuss the evolution of Lex Luthor on the series. Originally played by actor Scott Wells in four Season 1 episodes, Lex was a contemporary of Clark who also attended Shuster University.
At the start of Season 2, Lex underwent plastic surgery as Sherman Howard took over the role for some of the show's memorable installments, including "Bodyswap," "Mine Games," "Know Thine Enemy," the alternate universe saga "Roads Not Taken" and "The Road to Hell," and more.

In Vol. II, Anthony and guest Rob O'Connor (All Star Superfan Podcast) discuss perhaps the series' greatest strength: its tragically beautiful depiction of Bizarro (Douglas B. Great explorations of Superman’s character

Hi Anthony,

I love your podcast. I got back into comics recently and your show was the perfect one to get into. The way you approach discussion of Clark and Kal-El’s character is really engaging. Rather than go page by page, you opine on what were the most meaningful beats in the story and what that means for the characters as we follow their journeys.

The first Superman story I read was All Star by Morrison at the beginning of 2023 and that hooked me since. Your show has been great reference for which runs/series to get into. Your appreciation for comic shops as a community is also well-taken.

Anyway, I’m writing this by a waterfall in the woods in a rainstorm so I better get going. I’m excited to be making my way through the Loeb and Kelly run right now.

Sincerely,
Chase

Great exploration of a character

I’m not a huge Superman fan (he’s kind of a blindspot for me), but the passion expressed on this show MAKES me a Superman fan. I love how it’s across all types of media and how it explores his place in the wider DC universe, diving deep into his impact both in comics and culturally.
